🔧 RAV4 - Shock Absorber Replacement

This guide covers replacing the rear shock absorbers on your RAV4. The rear shocks control bounce and keep the tires planted, so worn shocks can cause poor ride quality, extra tire wear, and reduced stability.

Assumption: “Shock absorbers” refers to the rear shocks. The front uses complete strut assemblies, which is a different repair.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park your RAV4 on level ground.
• Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
• Place wheel chocks in front of the front tires.
• Open the liftgate and remove loose cargo from the rear area.
• Spray the rear shock lower bolts and upper mounting nuts with penetrating oil spray and let it soak for 5-10 minutes.
• No infotainment, scan tool, hybrid system isolation, or battery registration is needed for this job.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Lug Nuts

• Use a 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each rear wheel lug nut about half a turn.
• Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
• Tip: Loosen, do not remove yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Rear of the RAV4

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the rear center jacking point shown in the owner’s manual.
• Raise the rear high enough for both rear tires to clear the ground.
• Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the Toyota-approved rear side support points.
• Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
• Give the vehicle a light shake by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels

• Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the rear lug nuts.
• Remove both rear wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Support the Rear Suspension Arm

• Place the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum lightly under the rear suspension arm near the shock on the side you are working on.
• Raise the jack just enough to support the suspension arm. Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stand.
• This prevents the suspension from dropping suddenly when the shock is removed.

Step 5: Mark the Lower Shock Position

• Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower shock mount and bolt area.
• This gives you a visual reference when installing the new shock.

Step 6: Remove the Lower Shock Mounting Bolt

• Use a 19mm socket, ratchet 1/2-inch drive, and 19mm wrench to remove the lower shock mounting nut and bolt.
• If the bolt is stuck, apply penetrating oil spray and gently tap the bolt with a rubber mallet.
• Do not pry aggressively on the suspension arm.

Step 7: Remove the Upper Shock Mounting Nuts

• Use a 17mm socket, socket extension 6-inch 1/2-inch drive, and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the upper shock mounting nuts.
• Hold the shock body with one hand as the last nut comes off so it does not fall.
• Remove the old shock absorber from the wheel well.

Step 8: Compare the Old and New Shock

• Place the old and new shock absorbers side by side.
• Check that the length, mounting holes, studs, and bushings match.
• A bushing is the rubber cushion in the shock mount that reduces noise and vibration.

Step 9: Install the New Upper Shock Mount

• Position the new shock absorber into the upper mount by hand.
• Install the new upper mounting nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 17mm socket, socket extension 6-inch 1/2-inch drive, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the upper shock mounting nuts.
• Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs)

Step 10: Align the Lower Shock Mount

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to slowly raise or lower the suspension arm until the lower shock hole lines up.
• Install the new lower bolt and nut by hand.
• If needed, use a rubber mallet to lightly tap the bolt through the mount.

Step 11: Tighten the Lower Shock Mount at Ride Height

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the suspension arm until it is near normal ride height.
• Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lower shock mounting bolt and nut.
• Torque to 90 Nm (66 ft-lbs)
• Tip: Ride-height tightening protects bushings.

Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side

• Move the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to support the opposite rear suspension arm.
• Repeat Steps 5 through 11 on the other rear shock absorber.

Step 13: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

• Install both rear wheels by hand.
• Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
• A star pattern means tightening across the wheel instead of going in a circle.

Step 14: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

• Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift slightly and remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
• Lower your RAV4 until the tires are fully on the ground.
• Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the wheel lug nuts in a star pattern.
• Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs)

✅ After Repair

• Bounce the rear of your RAV4 by hand. It should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
• Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks, rattles, or knocking noises.
• Recheck the rear lug nut torque after a short drive.
• Rear shock replacement normally does not require wheel alignment unless other suspension parts were loosened or replaced.
• If the vehicle still feels unstable, inspect rear tires, sway bar links, control arm bushings, and rear wheel bearings.
