🔧 Escape - Rear Shock Absorber Replacement

This guide covers replacing the rear shock absorbers on your Escape. The rear shocks control bounce and keep the tires planted, so worn shocks can cause poor ride quality, longer stopping distance, and uneven tire wear.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

Assumption: “Shock absorbers” refers to the rear shocks; the front uses strut assemblies, not simple shocks.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level ground and support your Escape with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Replace rear shocks in pairs so the suspension stays balanced side-to-side.
  • ⚠️ Do not remove suspension bolts while the vehicle is unstable or only held by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep hands clear when raising or lowering the suspension with a jack.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for rear shock replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 19mm lug nut socket
  • Ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive
  • Ratchet wrench 1/2-inch drive
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • 15mm box-end wrench
  • 18mm box-end wrench
  • Torque wrench 1/2-inch drive
  • Breaker bar 1/2-inch drive
  • Penetrating oil
  • Rubber mallet
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear shock absorbers - Qty: 2
  • Rear shock upper mounting bolts - Qty: 4, replace if corroded or damaged
  • Rear shock lower mounting bolts - Qty: 2, replace if corroded or damaged

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on a flat, solid surface.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks in front of the front tires. Wheel chocks are blocks that stop the vehicle from rolling.
  • Spray penetrating oil on the rear shock upper and lower bolts, then wait 5-10 minutes.
  • Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each rear wheel lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen wheels before lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the rear of your Escape at the rear center jacking area or approved rear lift point.
  • Place jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum) under the approved rear support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the rear suspension for extra support.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 1/2-inch drive to remove the rear lug nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as an added safety backup.

Step 4: Support the Rear Suspension Arm

  • Place the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) under the rear lower suspension arm near the shock.
  • Raise the jack just enough to support the arm, not enough to lift the vehicle off the jack stand.
  • This removes tension from the shock bolts and makes removal easier.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Shock Bolt

  • Use an 18mm socket with the ratchet wrench 1/2-inch drive to remove the lower shock mounting bolt.
  • If the bolt turns with the nut, hold the opposite side with an 18mm box-end wrench.
  • If the bolt is stuck, apply penetrating oil and use the breaker bar 1/2-inch drive.
  • Tap the bolt out gently with a rubber mallet if needed.

Step 6: Remove the Upper Shock Bolts

  • Use a 15mm socket with the ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the upper shock mounting bolts.
  • Hold the shock with your gloved hand while removing the last bolt so it does not drop.
  • Use a 15mm box-end wrench if access is tight.

Step 7: Remove the Old Shock Absorber

  • Pull the old shock absorber out by hand.
  • Compare the old shock to the new shock absorber to make sure the length and mounting ends match.
  • If the new shock is strapped compressed, do not cut the strap until you are ready to install it.

Step 8: Install the New Shock Absorber

  • Position the new shock absorber by hand with the body and mount oriented the same way as the original.
  • Install the upper bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Cross-threading means the bolt is going in crooked and can damage the threads.
  • Use a 15mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to snug the upper bolts.
  • Do not fully tighten yet.

Step 9: Install the Lower Shock Bolt

  • Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to raise or lower the suspension arm until the lower shock eye lines up with the mounting hole.
  • Slide the lower bolt in by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm box-end wrench to snug the lower bolt.

Step 10: Torque the Shock Mounting Bolts

  • Use a torque wrench 1/2-inch drive with the correct socket to tighten the lower shock bolt to Torque to 115 Nm (85 ft-lbs).
  • Use the torque wrench 1/2-inch drive with a 15mm socket to tighten the upper shock bolts to Torque to 55 Nm (41 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat the same removal and installation steps on the other rear shock absorber.
  • Start all bolts by hand first.

Step 11: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Lift each wheel onto the hub by hand.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 12: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to raise the rear slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
  • Lower your Escape fully to the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench 1/2-inch drive with the 19mm lug nut socket to tighten the rear lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Push down firmly on the rear bumper area and release. Your Escape should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
  • Take a slow test drive over a smooth road first, then over small bumps.
  • Listen for clunks, rattles, or knocking from the rear suspension.
  • Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • Rear shock replacement does not normally require an alignment unless other suspension parts were loosened or replaced.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
