📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Escape on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Raise the rear door window fully.
- Open the rear door you are repairing.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Place painter's tape along the painted door edges to help prevent scratches.
- A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that removes panels without damaging the trim.
- Butyl sealing tape is sticky black body sealer used to reseal the plastic water shield.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Rear Door Switch Panel
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently lift the rear window switch panel from the armrest.
- Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab with your finger or a small flat blade screwdriver.
- Set the switch panel somewhere safe.
- Pry slowly to avoid broken clips.
Step 2: Remove Hidden Door Panel Screws
- Use a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the small trim cover behind the inside door handle.
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver or 7mm socket to remove the screw behind the handle cover, depending on fastener style.
- Use a 7mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 1/4-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the screw inside the armrest pull pocket.
- Check the lower edge of the door panel for additional 7mm socket screws and remove them if equipped.
Step 3: Release the Rear Door Trim Panel
- Start at the lower rear corner of the door panel with a plastic trim removal tool.
- Pop the trim clips loose one at a time around the sides and bottom of the panel.
- Lift the panel straight upward to unhook it from the top window ledge.
- Hold the panel close to the door while disconnecting remaining cables or connectors.
Step 4: Disconnect Handle Cable and Wiring
- Use a small flat blade screwdriver to release the inside door handle cable clip.
- Rotate the cable end out of the handle lever by hand.
- Unplug any remaining door panel electrical connectors by pressing their lock tabs.
- Set the door panel on a clean surface.
Step 5: Peel Back the Water Shield
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently lift the plastic water shield from the door.
- Only peel back the rear section enough to access the latch area.
- If the sealer stretches, use a pick tool to guide it away from the plastic without tearing it.
- Do not cut the water shield.
Step 6: Disconnect the Latch Electrical Connector
- Use a work light to look inside the rear of the door shell.
- Find the electrical connector plugged into the latch/actuator assembly.
- Press the connector lock tab by hand or with a small flat blade screwdriver.
- Unplug the connector from the latch.
Step 7: Disconnect the Lock Rods and Cables
- Use a work light to note how each rod and cable connects to the latch.
- Use needle-nose pliers or a pick tool to open the plastic retaining clips on the lock rods.
- Swing each clip away from the rod, then lift the rod out by hand.
- Release the exterior handle cable from the latch by rotating the cable end out of its lever.
- Take a quick photo before removing connections if needed.
Step 8: Remove the Rear Door Latch/Actuator Assembly
- Support the latch with one hand inside the door.
- Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the three latch screws from the rear edge of the door.
- Guide the latch/actuator assembly out through the door access opening.
- If clearance is tight, turn the latch slightly while pulling it out.
Step 9: Compare the New Latch/Actuator
- Place the old and new latch/actuator assemblies side by side.
- Confirm the connector location, cable levers, and rod attachment points match.
- If any rubber bumpers or clips must be transferred, use a small flat blade screwdriver to move them carefully.
Step 10: Install the New Latch/Actuator Assembly
- Guide the new latch/actuator assembly into the door by hand.
- Line it up with the rear edge of the door.
- Start all three latch screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a Torx T30 screwdriver and torque wrench 20-100 in-lbs to tighten the latch screws.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
Step 11: Reconnect Rods, Cables, and Connector
- Reconnect each lock rod into the same latch lever by hand.
- Use needle-nose pliers to snap each plastic retaining clip closed.
- Reconnect the exterior handle cable by rotating the cable end into the latch lever.
- Plug in the latch electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 12: Test Before Reinstalling the Door Panel
- Use a small flat blade screwdriver to rotate the latch claw to the closed position while the door stays open.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Plug the rear window switch panel in temporarily by hand.
- Test lock and unlock using the power lock switch.
- Pull the inside handle to confirm the latch releases.
- Use the outside handle to confirm the latch releases.
- Use the 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable again before final panel installation.
- Test now before closing the door.
Step 13: Reseal the Water Shield
- Press the water shield back into place by hand.
- If the original sealer no longer sticks, apply butyl sealing tape around the opening.
- Use your fingers to press the shield firmly into the sealer all the way around.
- Make sure no wiring is trapped outside its normal path.
Step 14: Reinstall the Rear Door Panel
- Reconnect the inside handle cable by hand.
- Reconnect any door panel electrical connectors by hand.
- Hang the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
- Line up the trim clips with their holes.
- Press around the panel edges by hand until each clip snaps in.
- If a clip is broken, replace it with a new rear door trim panel clip.
Step 15: Reinstall Screws and Switch Panel
- Use a 7mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 1/4-inch drive 6-inch extension to reinstall the armrest and lower door panel screws.
- Use a Torx T20 screwdriver or 7mm socket to reinstall the inside handle screw.
- Snap the inside handle trim cover back in by hand.
- Plug in the rear window switch connector by hand.
- Press the switch panel into the armrest until it clips in place.
Step 16: Reconnect Battery and Final Test
- Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Close the rear door gently the first time.
- Test lock and unlock with the key fob.
- Test lock and unlock with the driver door switch.
- Test the inside and outside rear door handles.
- Confirm the door-open warning light turns off when the door is closed.
✅ After Repair
- Make sure the rear door locks and unlocks smoothly several times.
- Verify the child safety lock still works if that rear door has it engaged.
- Check that the rear window switch works normally.
- Listen for rattles inside the door during a short drive.
- If water leaks appear after rain or washing, remove the panel and reseal the water shield with butyl sealing tape.
