🔧 Grand Cherokee - Rear Brake Pads & Rotor Replacement
On your Grand Cherokee, the rear brake job can be either a standard sliding-caliper setup or the SRT Brembo fixed-caliper setup (pads retained by pins/spring). The steps, tools, and torque specs change depending on which rear brakes you have, and whether your parking brake is electronic or a foot pedal.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Work on level ground and use jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- 🔥 Brakes get extremely hot; let everything cool before touching rotors/calipers.
- 🧪 Brake dust is harmful; use brake cleaner, not compressed air.
- 🧯 Keep brake fluid off paint; it damages finishes fast.
- ⚠️ Parking brake: if your Grand Cherokee has an electronic parking brake (EPB), it may need service mode before pushing pistons back.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, turn the wheel straight, and chock the front wheels.
- Make sure the parking brake is fully released.
- Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir so you can monitor fluid level as pistons are pushed back.
- Quick check (takes 30 seconds): look through the rear wheel spokes—do you see a Brembo caliper and two pad-retaining pins across the face?
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify your rear brake type (critical)
- Use a flashlight to look at the rear caliper through the wheel.
- If you see Brembo branding and pad pins/spring on the outside face, you have the SRT-style fixed calipers.
- If you see a simpler caliper with a slider/guide-pin layout, it’s a standard floating caliper setup.
Step 2: Identify your parking brake style (critical)
- Check the cabin: do you have a parking brake pedal (left side) or an EPB switch (button/switch)?
- If it’s an EPB switch, do not force the rear pistons back until we confirm the correct service mode procedure.
Step 3: Safely lift the rear and remove wheels
- Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to crack the rear lug nuts loose 1/4 turn while on the ground.
- Lift the rear with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support the vehicle with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove lug nuts with the 21mm socket.
- Reinstall later and tighten lug nuts to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.
Step 4: Stop here so I can give you the correct caliper/rotor procedure + exact fastener sizes/torques
- Reply with:
- 1) “Brembo rear” or “Standard rear caliper”
- 2) “EPB switch” or “Foot parking brake pedal”
- A quick photo of the rear caliper helps.
âś… After Repair
- Do not drive until you can confirm a firm pedal after the pads are installed and pistons are seated.
- After the correct procedure is followed: pump the brake pedal until it’s firm, then recheck brake fluid level.
- Perform a cautious test drive and listen for scraping/grinding.
