📋 Before You Begin
- Park your RAV4 on level ground.
- Make sure the transmission is in Park.
- Chock the front wheels with wheel chocks.
- Release the parking brake before starting the service mode process.
- A scan tool is strongly recommended. An OBD scan tool plugs into the diagnostic port and can command the electronic parking brake motors to retract safely.
- If your scan tool has a menu, use: ABS/VSC/TRAC > Utility > ECB Utility > Rear Brake Pad Replacement / EPB Maintenance Mode.
- Do not open the driver door, press the parking brake switch, or turn the ignition ON/OFF randomly once the calipers are removed.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Enter Electronic Parking Brake Service Mode
- Use the OBD scan tool with electronic parking brake service mode and connect it to the diagnostic port under the driver-side dash.
- Turn the vehicle to ignition ON without starting it. Keep your foot off the brake and press the power button twice.
- Use the scan tool menu: ABS/VSC/TRAC > Utility > ECB Utility > Rear Brake Pad Replacement / EPB Maintenance Mode.
- Follow the scan tool prompts until the rear parking brake motors retract.
- Turn the ignition OFF when the scan tool says the vehicle is ready for pad replacement.
- Listen for both rear motors.
Step 2: Loosen the Rear Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet to loosen each rear lug nut about one turn.
- Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
Step 3: Raise and Support the Rear of the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack at the rear center jacking point to lift the rear of your RAV4.
- Place jack stands under the approved rear side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lift point as a backup.
Step 4: Remove the Rear Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both rear wheels and set them flat on the ground.
Step 5: Remove the Rear Caliper
- Use the 14mm socket to remove the lower rear caliper slide pin bolt.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm open-end wrench.
- Use the 14mm socket to remove the upper rear caliper slide pin bolt.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket carefully.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension using the brake caliper hanger hook.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Use your hands or a flat-blade screwdriver to slide the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless pad clips from the bracket.
- The pad clips are thin metal guides that help the pads slide smoothly.
- Compare the old pads to the new pads before installation.
Step 7: Clean the Caliper Bracket
- Use the brake cleaner spray to clean the caliper bracket where the pad clips sit.
- Use the small wire brush to remove rust and dirt from the bracket contact areas.
- Wipe the area clean with a shop towel.
- Clean clips prevent brake squeaks.
Step 8: Install New Brake Pad Hardware
- Use your hands to snap the new rear brake pad hardware clips into the caliper bracket.
- Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the areas of the clips where the pad ears touch.
- Do not put lubricant on the brake pad friction material or rotor surface.
Step 9: Compress the Rear Caliper Piston
- Use the disc brake pad spreader tool to slowly push the caliper piston straight back into the caliper bore.
- The caliper piston is the round metal part that presses the brake pad against the rotor.
- Move slowly and watch the brake fluid level in the reservoir under the hood.
- If the reservoir gets too full, stop and remove a small amount of fluid with a suitable fluid extractor.
- Do not twist the piston unless a Toyota-specific service instruction or scan tool tells you to.
Step 10: Install the New Rear Brake Pads
- Use your hands to install the new inner and outer rear brake pads into the caliper bracket.
- Make sure the pads slide freely in the new hardware clips.
- If the pads are tight, remove them and clean the bracket again with the small wire brush and brake cleaner spray.
Step 11: Reinstall the Rear Caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket to install the upper and lower slide pin bolts.
- Hold the slide pin with the 17mm open-end wrench if it spins.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Repeat on the Other Rear Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 11 on the other rear brake assembly.
- Use the same tools and the same torque specification.
- Rear brake pads should always be replaced as an axle set, meaning both left and right sides together.
Step 13: Reinstall the Rear Wheels
- Put both rear wheels back onto the hubs by hand.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Do not fully torque the lug nuts while the vehicle is in the air.
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle and Torque Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to raise the rear slightly and remove the jack stands.
- Lower your RAV4 until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the torque wrench with the 21mm lug nut socket.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.
Step 15: Exit Electronic Parking Brake Service Mode
- Use the OBD scan tool with electronic parking brake service mode again.
- Turn ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Use the scan tool menu: ABS/VSC/TRAC > Utility > ECB Utility > Rear Brake Pad Replacement / EPB Maintenance Mode.
- Follow the prompts to exit service mode and initialize the rear parking brake.
- Apply and release the parking brake using the switch to confirm normal operation.
Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal
- With the vehicle still in Park, press the brake pedal slowly 5-10 times.
- The pedal should become firm.
- Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.
