📋 Before You Begin
- 📋 Park on firm, level ground with the transmission in Park.
- 📋 Turn off AUTOHOLD and place wheel chocks firmly against both sides of a front tire.
- 📋 Check the brake-fluid reservoir. If it’s completely full, remove a small amount with a clean fluid syringe before compressing the pistons.
- 📋 Leave the battery connected and make sure it’s adequately charged.
- 📋 Keep the driver’s door closed while entering EPB maintenance mode.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Enter EPB maintenance mode
- Sit in the driver’s seat and keep your foot off the brake pedal.
- Press the start button twice to switch the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Depress the brake pedal and push the EPB switch downward to release the parking brake. Confirm the red parking-brake indicator goes out.
- Switch the ignition OFF.
- Fully depress and hold the accelerator pedal. At the same time, push and hold the EPB switch downward.
- While holding both controls, switch the ignition ON without starting the engine within five seconds.
- Listen for the rear EPB motors retracting. Confirm the amber brake-system warning light illuminates, then release the pedal and switch.
- Motor noise here is expected.
Step 2: Loosen the rear wheel nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear lug nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts while your CX-5 is still on the ground.
Step 3: Raise and support the rear
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the specified rear lifting point.
- Place the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum, pair beneath the approved side support points.
- Lower your CX-5 gently onto the stands, then lightly shake the body to confirm it’s stable.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove both rear wheels.
Step 4: Inspect the first rear brake
- Wear safety glasses and spray the assembly with non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
- Inspect the brake hose, caliper dust boot, rotor surface, and pad wear.
- If one pad is dramatically thinner than its partner, stop and inspect the slide pins and caliper for binding.
- Replace the rotors in pairs if they’re deeply grooved, cracked, heavily rust-pitted, or heat-spotted.
Step 5: Remove the caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide bolts.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket without pulling on its electrical wiring or brake hose.
- Support it with the brake caliper hanger hook.
- Never let the caliper hang from the hose. Brake hoses don’t appreciate being used as bungee cords.
Step 6: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
- If necessary, use the small flat-blade screwdriver carefully without gouging the rotor or bracket.
- Remove the stainless pad clips if replacements are included.
- Use the nylon detailing brush and brake cleaner to clean the pad-contact surfaces.
Step 7: Inspect and lubricate the slide pins
- Pull one slide pin out at a time by hand so their positions aren’t mixed.
- Wipe off the old grease and inspect the pin and rubber boot for rust, scoring, swelling, or tears.
- Apply a thin coating of silicone ceramic brake lubricant and reinstall the pin.
- Confirm each pin moves smoothly and its rubber boot seats fully.
- Do not put petroleum grease on rubber brake parts.
Step 8: Compress the caliper piston
- Place the old inner pad against the piston face.
- Use the rear brake caliper compression tool to press the piston slowly and straight into the caliper.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and stop if the fluid approaches the rim.
- Do not rotate the piston. Maintenance mode retracts the EPB mechanism so the piston can be pressed straight inward.
- Stop if the piston needs excessive force or the dust boot twists or balloons.
Step 9: Install the new pads
- Snap the new hardware clips securely into the bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin film of silicone ceramic brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the clips.
- Install the inner and outer pads in their matching positions.
- Keep grease completely off the rotor and pad friction surfaces.
Step 10: Reinstall the caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the hose.
- Start both slide bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both slide bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
- Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the opposite rear wheel.
Step 11: Reinstall the rear wheels
- Mount each wheel and start all lug nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Raise your CX-5 slightly with the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum, remove the stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 108-147 Nm (80-108 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Seat the pads before restoring the EPB
- With the ignition OFF, press the brake pedal repeatedly by hand pressure until it becomes firm.
- Do not proceed if the pedal remains soft or sinks toward the floor.
- Check the reservoir and set the brake-fluid level between MIN and MAX.
Step 13: Exit EPB maintenance mode
- Keep your foot off the brake pedal and switch the ignition OFF.
- Fully depress and hold the accelerator pedal. Pull and hold the EPB switch upward.
- While holding both controls, switch the ignition ON without starting the engine within five seconds.
- Listen for both EPB motors operating and confirm the amber brake-system warning light goes out.
- Release the accelerator pedal and EPB switch.
- Apply and release the parking brake once while firmly holding the brake pedal.

- ✅ Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal feels firm.
- ✅ Verify the red brake and amber EPB warning lights switch off.
- ✅ Apply and release the electric parking brake several times while stationary.
- ✅ Check behind both rear wheels for brake-fluid leaks.
- ✅ Perform a slow test in a safe area, checking braking before exceeding walking speed.
- ✅ Make several moderate stops from about 30 mph to bed the pads, allowing cooling time between stops.
