🔧 Silverado 1500 - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

This is a solid intermediate DIY job. You'll remove both rear calipers, retract the pistons, replace the pads and hardware, then restore normal parking-brake operation.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

Assumption: These instructions cover the new-body brake system with an electronic parking brake. If your calipers have no electrical parking-brake motors, skip the service-mode steps.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Silverado with properly rated jack stands. Never work under a truck supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while either caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Put the electronic parking brake into service mode before compressing either rear piston.
  • ⚠️ Never let a caliper hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it away with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease and brake fluid off the pad friction material and rotor faces.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required for this procedure.

🔧 Required Tools

  • 22mm deep socket
  • Rear caliper bolt socket set
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 1/2-inch drive breaker bar
  • 1/2-inch drive torque wrench rated to 140 ft-lbs
  • Electronic parking brake service scan tool (specialty)
  • Disc brake piston compression tool (specialty)
  • Brake caliper hanger
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Nylon brake cleaning brush
  • 3-ton floor jack
  • 3-ton jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

Replace the rear pads on both sides together. Never replace pads on only one rear wheel.


📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level, solid ground and place the transmission in Park.
  • Chock both front wheels securely.
  • Release the parking brake completely.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is overfilled, remove a small amount before retracting the pistons.
  • Connect the scan tool and select Chevrolet > Silverado 1500 > Chassis > Electronic Parking Brake > Service Mode.
  • Command the parking-brake actuators to retract. Wait for the scan tool to confirm service mode.
  • A scan tool is the safest beginner method. Guessing switch-and-pedal sequences is how expensive parking-brake motors become shop decorations.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the rear wheel nuts

  • Keep the truck on the ground.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts yet.

Step 2: Raise and support the truck

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack at the approved rear lifting point.
  • Position the 3-ton jack stands securely beneath the rear axle tubes.
  • Lower the axle carefully onto the stands and leave the floor jack lightly supporting it.
  • Push the truck gently to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove both rear wheels

  • Use the 22mm deep socket to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and slide them underneath the frame as an additional precaution.

Step 4: Inspect the brake assembly

  • Look for brake-fluid leaks, torn piston boots, damaged hoses or badly grooved rotors.
  • Check that both rotor faces are reasonably smooth and free from deep scoring or blue heat spots.
  • If a pad has worn much thinner than its matching pad, stop and inspect the caliper slides and piston.

Step 5: Disconnect the wear sensor

  • Locate the rear pad wear-sensor lead, if equipped.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to release its retaining clips without pulling on the wire.
  • Disconnect the electrical connector and note the original wire routing.

Step 6: Remove the rear caliper

  • Use the matching socket from the rear caliper bolt socket set and the 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper bolts.
  • Hold the slide pin with the appropriate wrench if it rotates with the bolt.
  • Lift the caliper away from the rotor.
  • Support it with the brake caliper hanger. Do not twist or stretch the hose.

Step 7: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Slide the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless abutment clips.
  • Abutment clips are the small metal tracks that support the pad ends.
  • Keep the old pads arranged by position until the new pads are correctly installed.

Step 8: Clean the caliper bracket

  • Spray the bracket contact areas with non-chlorinated brake cleaner.
  • Use the nylon brake cleaning brush to remove rust and packed brake dust beneath the clips.
  • Wipe the area clean and allow it to dry.
  • Clean clips make quiet brakes.

Step 9: Check the slide pins

  • Pull each slide pin outward by hand and make sure it moves smoothly.
  • Inspect the rubber boots for tears or looseness.
  • Apply a thin coat of silicone ceramic brake lubricant if the pins are dry.
  • Do not use petroleum grease because it can damage the rubber boots.

Step 10: Compress the caliper piston

  • Confirm the scan tool still shows Electronic Parking Brake Service Mode.
  • Place an old pad across the piston face.
  • Use the disc brake piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Stop if the fluid approaches the top.
  • Do not force or rotate an electronic parking-brake piston unless the service tool specifically instructs you to.

Step 11: Install the new hardware and pads

  • Press the new abutment clips firmly into the caliper bracket.
  • Apply an extremely thin film of silicone ceramic brake lubricant where the pad tabs touch the clips.
  • Do not put lubricant on the rotor or friction material.
  • Install the new inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Verify that each pad slides freely without excessive looseness.

Step 12: Reinstall the caliper

  • Lower the caliper over the new pads without damaging the piston boot.
  • Start both caliper bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the correct socket from the rear caliper bolt socket set and the torque wrench.
  • Torque the rear caliper guide-pin bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect and correctly route the wear-sensor lead, if equipped.

Step 13: Repeat on the opposite side

  • Use the same tools and procedure on the other rear wheel.
  • Compare both finished assemblies before installing the wheels.
  • Confirm every bolt is tight and no hose or sensor wire is twisted.

Step 14: Reinstall the rear wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all six wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Raise the truck slightly with the 3-ton floor jack, remove the stands and lower it fully.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Torque the wheel nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Restore the parking brake

  • Use the electronic parking brake service scan tool.
  • Select Electronic Parking Brake > Exit Service Mode.
  • Command the actuators to apply and release.
  • Clear any temporary parking-brake codes only after normal operation is restored.

✅ After Repair

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Never move your Silverado while the pedal still travels unusually close to the floor.
  • Start the engine and confirm the pedal remains firm under steady pressure.
  • Apply and release the electronic parking brake several times.
  • Check the brake-fluid level and correct it without overfilling.
  • Inspect both rear calipers for leaks and confirm the hoses are routed correctly.
  • Reset the rear brake-pad life monitor through the driver information display if the replacement reminder remains active.
  • Perform several gentle stops from about 30 mph, allowing time between stops for cooling.
  • Avoid panic stops, towing and prolonged brake application for the first 200 miles unless the pad manufacturer specifies another bedding procedure.
  • Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 50 miles.
