🔧 RAV4 - Rear Brake Pad Replacement
This job replaces the rear brake pads on your RAV4. The rear brakes use an electric parking brake, so the parking brake must be placed into service mode before the calipers are removed.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Do not remove the rear calipers until the electric parking brake is in service mode.
- ⚠️ Keep hands clear of the rear calipers when entering or exiting parking brake service mode.
- ⚠️ Support your RAV4 with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
- ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful. Do not blow it with compressed air; use brake cleaner instead.
- ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your RAV4 on level ground.
- Place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels.
- Make sure the brake pedal is not being pressed.
- Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool with Toyota EPB service mode capability to enter rear brake service mode. EPB means electric parking brake.
- Confirm the rear parking brake motors retract before removing the rear calipers.
- Leave the ignition OFF after service mode is activated.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Enter Rear Brake Service Mode
- Plug the OBD-II scan tool with Toyota EPB service mode capability into the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
- Select the Toyota parking brake or EPB service function.
- Choose the rear brake pad replacement or maintenance mode option.
- Wait until the scan tool confirms the rear electric parking brake is retracted.
- Listen for the rear motors.
Step 2: Loosen Rear Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench to loosen each rear lug nut about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
Step 3: Raise and Support the Rear
- Use the floor jack to lift the rear of your RAV4 at the rear center jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the approved rear side support points.
- Gently lower your RAV4 onto the jack stands.
- Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable.
Step 4: Remove the Rear Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both rear wheels and set them flat on the ground.
Step 5: Remove the Rear Caliper
- Use the 17mm open-end wrench to hold the caliper slide pin steady.
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet wrench to remove the upper and lower rear caliper bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension using the bungee cord.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry the old pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Remove the old stainless pad clips from the bracket by hand or with the flathead screwdriver.
- Use the brake cleaner spray to clean the bracket.
- Use the small wire brush to clean the pad contact areas where the clips sit.
Step 7: Compress the Rear Caliper Piston
- Check that the electric parking brake is still in service mode before compressing the piston.
- Place the old inner pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly press the piston straight back into the caliper.
- A piston compressor pushes the caliper piston back to make room for the thicker new pads.
- Stop if the piston does not move smoothly.
Step 8: Install New Pad Hardware
- Snap the new rear brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the clips.
- Do not get lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor face.
- Less grease is better.
Step 9: Install the New Rear Brake Pads
- Slide the new rear brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pads move freely in the clips.
- If a pad is tight, remove it and clean the bracket again with the small wire brush.
Step 10: Reinstall the Rear Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord and lower the caliper over the new pads.
- Install the caliper bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm open-end wrench to hold the slide pin steady.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the caliper bolts to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 10 on the opposite rear brake.
- Always replace rear brake pads in pairs.
Step 12: Reinstall the Rear Wheels
- Place each rear wheel back onto the hub.
- Install lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 13: Lower and Torque the Wheels
- Use the floor jack to raise your RAV4 slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the rear lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Exit Rear Brake Service Mode
- Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool with Toyota EPB service mode capability to exit parking brake service mode.
- Wait for the scan tool to confirm normal EPB operation.
- Apply and release the parking brake once using the parking brake switch.
Step 15: Seat the Brake Pads
- Use your foot to press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
- Do not drive until the pedal feels normal.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your RAV4 and confirm the brake warning light turns off.
- ✅ Test the electric parking brake. Apply it, release it, and listen for smooth operation.
- ✅ Check behind both rear wheels for brake fluid leaks.
- ✅ Take a slow test drive in a safe area before normal driving.
- ✅ Bed in the pads with several gentle stops from about 30 mph, allowing time to cool between stops.
- ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless it is an emergency.
