  • ⚠️ Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it with compressed air; use brake cleaner.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Ranger on level ground and shift the transmission to Park.
  • 🛑 Release the parking brake before lifting the rear wheels.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks tightly in front of and behind the front wheels.
  • 🧴 Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir. If it is near MAX, remove a small amount before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • 🔍 A caliper piston compressor tool is a simple clamp-style tool that pushes the brake piston back into the caliper so new pads fit.
  • 🔩 A caliper guide pin is a smooth bolt/pin that lets the brake caliper slide as the pads wear.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear lug nut about half a turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
  • Loosen only; do not remove yet.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Rear of the Truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the rear of your Ranger at the rear axle housing area.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the rear axle tubes, one on each side.
  • Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands and gently shake the truck to confirm it is stable.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the axle as a backup support.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and place them flat under the truck frame area as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean loose brake dust from the caliper and pad area.
  • Look at the rotor surface. Deep grooves, heavy rust, or a strong vibration complaint means the rotors should be replaced or resurfaced.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Guide Pin Bolt

  • Use a 15mm wrench to hold the caliper guide pin steady if it spins.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower rear caliper guide pin bolt.
  • Set the bolt somewhere clean so dirt does not stick to it.

Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver gently between the caliper and pad to create a small amount of space.
  • Swing the caliper upward away from the brake pads.
  • Use a brake caliper hanger hook to support the caliper from the suspension.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Rear Brake Pads

  • Pull the inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • If they are stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry them out.
  • Note how the pads and hardware clips are installed before removing them.

Step 8: Replace the Brake Hardware Clips

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless pad clips from the caliper bracket.
  • Clean the bracket contact points with brake cleaner spray and shop towels.
  • Install the new clips from the rear brake hardware kit by pressing them fully into place by hand.
  • Apply a thin film of brake lubricant only where the pad ears slide on the clips.
  • Do not put lubricant on the pad friction surface or rotor.

Step 9: Compress the Rear Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston straight back into the caliper bore.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. If fluid rises too high, remove a small amount using a clean fluid syringe.
  • Compress slowly. Fast pressure can force fluid backward too aggressively.

Step 10: Install the New Rear Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer rear brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad ears sit correctly in the new hardware clips.
  • The pads should slide smoothly with light hand pressure.
  • If forced, something is misaligned.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the brake caliper hanger hook.
  • Swing the caliper down over the new pads.
  • Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to install the lower caliper guide pin bolt.
  • Use the 15mm wrench to hold the guide pin if it spins.
  • Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Move to the other rear wheel and repeat Steps 4 through 11 using the same tools.
  • Rear brake pads should always be replaced as a set on both sides.

Step 13: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Place each rear wheel back onto the hub by hand.
  • Thread the lug nuts on by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 14: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the rear axle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower your Ranger until the rear tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm lug nut socket to torque the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
  • Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid level and top off with DOT 4 brake fluid only if needed.
  • ✅ Start your Ranger and press the brake pedal again. It should stay firm and not sink to the floor.
  • ✅ Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ After 25-50 miles, recheck the rear wheels and confirm there are no unusual noises, smells, or fluid leaks.
  • ✅ If the brake warning light comes on, the pedal feels soft, or the truck pulls while braking, stop driving and reinspect the work.
