📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your TITAN on level ground.
  • Shift the transmission to Park.
  • Do not set the parking brake for this job because you are working on the rear brakes.
  • Place wheel chocks in front of and behind at least one front tire.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir.
  • If the brake fluid reservoir is completely full, use shop towels around it to catch any overflow when the caliper pistons are compressed.
  • A caliper piston compressor tool pushes the brake piston back into the caliper so the new, thicker pads will fit.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the rear lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
  • Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Raise and support the rear of the truck

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the rear of your TITAN at a solid rear axle lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the rear axle tubes.
  • Slowly lower the truck onto the jack stands.
  • Gently shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable before working near the brakes.

Step 3: Remove the rear wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels.
  • Slide each wheel slightly under the truck as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Inspect the rear brake assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Look at the rear caliper, pads, rotor, and rubber brake hose.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean heavy dust from the caliper area.
  • Do not spray brake cleaner on painted body panels.

Step 5: Remove the lower caliper slide bolt

  • Use a 14mm socket to remove the lower rear caliper slide bolt.
  • If the slide pin spins, hold the flat area of the slide pin with a 19mm wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
  • A slide pin is the smooth guide pin that lets the caliper move in and out as the pads wear.

Step 6: Pivot the caliper upward

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver gently between the caliper and old pad to create a small amount of clearance.
  • Pivot the caliper upward and away from the pads.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
  • If needed, support the caliper carefully by resting it on the suspension area.

Step 7: Remove the old rear brake pads

  • Pull the inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • If they are stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry them free.
  • Note how the old pads and clips are positioned before removing the hardware.
  • Take a quick photo first.

Step 8: Remove and clean the pad hardware area

  • Remove the old pad hardware clips by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Use a wire brush to clean the bracket where the hardware clips sit.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to clean the bracket after brushing.
  • The pads must slide smoothly in the bracket. Rust buildup here can cause brake drag or uneven wear.

Step 9: Install the new brake pad hardware

  • Press the new rear brake pad hardware clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure each clip sits fully flat and does not rock.
  • Apply a very thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact points on the hardware.
  • Do not put lubricant on the rotor or pad friction material.

Step 10: Compress the rear caliper piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the disc brake caliper piston compressor tool to slowly push the piston fully back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood while compressing the piston.
  • If fluid rises close to the top, stop and use shop towels to prevent overflow.
  • Go slow to protect seals.

Step 11: Install the new rear brake pads

  • Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
  • The pads should slide into the hardware clips without forcing them.
  • If they bind, remove them and re-clean the bracket with the wire brush.

Step 12: Reinstall the caliper

  • Pivot the caliper back down over the new pads.
  • Align the lower slide bolt hole by hand.
  • Install the lower caliper slide bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 19mm wrench if needed to tighten the slide bolt.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the other rear side

  • Use the same tools and steps on the opposite rear brake.
  • Always replace rear brake pads as a complete axle set, meaning both left and right sides together.

Step 14: Reinstall the rear wheels

  • Place the rear wheels back onto the hubs.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Do not fully torque them while the truck is still in the air.

Step 15: Lower the truck and torque the lug nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the truck until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 180 Nm (133 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Pump the brake pedal

  • Before moving the truck, sit in the driver seat.
  • Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back against the new pads.
  • Do not drive until the pedal is firm.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid level and make sure it is between the MIN and MAX marks.
  • ✅ Start your TITAN and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm.
  • ✅ Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Listen for scraping, grinding, or clunking noises.
  • ✅ Recheck rear lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
  • ✅ Bed in the new pads by making several moderate stops from about 30-40 mph, allowing the brakes to cool between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
