Replacing the rear brake pads on your HR-V means putting the electric parking brake into service mode, removing the rear calipers, swapping the pads, and bedding the brakes afterward. The rear caliper piston must be compressed only after the electronic parking brake motor is retracted.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Your HR-V uses an electric parking brake, often called EPB. The EPB motor must be retracted before removing or compressing the rear caliper.
  • ⚠️ Do not twist the rear caliper piston. On this Honda setup, once EPB service mode is active, the piston is pressed straight back in.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands. Never work under or around a vehicle held only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust is harmful. Wear safety glasses, gloves, and avoid blowing dust with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Keep brake fluid off paint. It can damage painted surfaces quickly.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while the caliper is removed.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your HR-V on level ground.
  • Leave the transmission in Park.
  • Chock the front wheels with wheel chocks.
  • Make sure the 12-volt battery is healthy. EPB service mode needs stable battery voltage.
  • Do not set the parking brake before starting the brake work.
  • Open the brake fluid reservoir cap only if fluid level is near the top. This helps prevent overflow when the pistons are pushed back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Put the EPB into service mode

  • Use an EPB service-capable scan tool. This tool tells the parking brake motors to retract so the calipers can be serviced safely.
  • Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
  • Connect the scan tool to the diagnostic port under the driver-side dash.
  • Select Honda > HR-V > Parking Brake > Maintenance Mode / Pad Replacement Mode > Enter.
  • Wait until the scan tool confirms the rear EPB motors are fully retracted.
  • Turn the ignition OFF after the scan tool confirms service mode.
  • Do not skip this step.

Step 2: Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts

  • Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the rear lug nuts about half a turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.

Step 3: Raise and support the rear of the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the rear of your HR-V at the approved rear jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved rear support points.
  • Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable.

Step 4: Remove the rear wheels

  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the rear lug nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 5: Inspect the rear brake assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use brake cleaner spray to lightly clean the caliper and pad area.
  • Look for uneven pad wear, torn rubber slide pin boots, brake fluid leaks, or deep rotor grooves.
  • If the rotor is badly grooved or below minimum thickness, replace the rotors too.

Step 6: Remove the lower caliper bolt

  • Use a 17mm wrench to hold the caliper slide pin steady.
  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the lower caliper bolt.
  • A slide pin is the smooth pin the caliper moves on as the pads wear.

Step 7: Swing the caliper upward

  • Use your hand to swing the caliper upward away from the pads.
  • If it is stuck, use a flat trim tool gently between the caliper and pad to create a little movement.
  • Support the caliper with a brake caliper hanger hook.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.

Step 8: Remove the old brake pads and hardware

  • Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out by hand.
  • Use a flat trim tool if the pads are stuck in the bracket.
  • Remove the stainless pad clips from the caliper bracket by hand or with the flat trim tool.
  • Pad clips are small metal guides that help the pads slide smoothly.

Step 9: Clean the caliper bracket contact points

  • Use a wire brush to clean the areas where the pad clips sit.
  • Use brake cleaner spray to wash away loose dust and rust.
  • Do not spray brake cleaner directly into the rubber slide pin boots.
  • Clean brackets prevent brake noise.

Step 10: Install the new pad hardware

  • Install the new rear brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure each clip sits fully flat in the bracket.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad contact areas on the clips.
  • Do not get lubricant on the rotor or pad friction material.

Step 11: Compress the rear caliper piston

  • Use a disc brake piston compression tool to press the rear caliper piston straight back into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Remove excess fluid only if it rises too high.
  • Do not rotate the piston unless your scan tool procedure specifically instructs it.
  • Stop when the piston is fully seated and the new pads will fit over the rotor.

Step 12: Install the new rear brake pads

  • Install the new rear brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
  • If your pad set includes wear indicators, install them in the same position as the original pads.
  • The pads should slide smoothly in the new clips without forcing them.

Step 13: Reinstall the caliper

  • Swing the caliper down over the new brake pads by hand.
  • Use the 12mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to install the lower caliper bolt.
  • Use the 17mm wrench to hold the slide pin while tightening.
  • Use the torque wrench with 12mm socket and tighten the caliper bolt to Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Repeat on the other rear side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 13 on the opposite rear wheel.
  • Use the same 12mm socket, 17mm wrench, disc brake piston compression tool, and torque wrench.
  • Rear brake pads should always be replaced in pairs.

Step 15: Reinstall the rear wheels

  • Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
  • Install the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 19mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 16: Lower the vehicle and torque the wheels

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower your HR-V until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench and 19mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 17: Exit EPB service mode

  • Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
  • Use the EPB service-capable scan tool.
  • Select Honda > HR-V > Parking Brake > Maintenance Mode / Pad Replacement Mode > Exit.
  • Wait for the EPB motors to cycle and the scan tool to confirm normal operation.
  • Turn the ignition OFF.

Step 18: Seat the brake pads before driving

  • Press the brake pedal slowly 5-10 times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
  • Check the brake fluid level and reinstall the reservoir cap if it was removed.
  • Use brake cleaner spray to clean any spills before driving.

  • ✅ Start your HR-V and confirm the brake pedal feels firm before shifting out of Park.
  • ✅ Apply and release the electric parking brake 2-3 times to confirm normal operation.
  • ✅ Check that no brake warning or parking brake warning lights remain on.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area first. Make several gentle stops.
  • ✅ Bed the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from about 30 mph to 5 mph, letting the brakes cool slightly between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 100-200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive: Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
