Replacing the rear brake pads requires retracting the electronic parking brake, removing both rear calipers, and installing a complete axle set of pads. Your Malibu uses electric parking-brake motors on the rear calipers, so they must be placed in service mode before the pistons are compressed.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Use a bidirectional scan tool to retract the electronic parking brake before removing either caliper.
  • ⚠️ Never apply 12 volts directly to the parking-brake motors; incorrect polarity can damage them.
  • ⚠️ Support your Malibu with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal or operate the parking-brake switch while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a caliper hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust may be harmful. Do not use compressed air to clean the brakes.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required. Stable battery voltage is required while using the scan tool.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park on level, solid ground. Shift into Park, switch off the engine, and chock both front wheels.
  • 🔋 Connect the 12-volt battery maintainer according to its instructions. Do not use a charger’s high-output boost mode.
  • 🧰 Confirm that the scan tool offers a GM electronic parking brake service or pad-replacement function.
  • 🛑 Release the electronic parking brake before lifting the vehicle.
  • 🔍 Check the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is at the maximum line, remove a small amount with a clean fluid extractor so it will not overflow when the pistons are compressed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Enter Electronic Parking Brake Service Mode

  • Connect the bidirectional GM-compatible scan tool to the diagnostic connector under the driver-side dashboard.
  • Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the scan tool and select Chevrolet > Malibu > Chassis > Electronic Parking Brake > Brake Pad Replacement Mode > Retract. Menu wording can vary by scan-tool brand.
  • Wait until both rear parking-brake motors stop and the scan tool confirms that service mode is active.
  • Switch the ignition off, but leave the electronic parking brake released.

Step 2: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts while your Malibu is still on the ground.

Step 3: Raise and Support the Rear

  • Place the floor jack under the approved rear-center lifting point, then raise the rear of your Malibu.
  • Place the jack stands beneath the reinforced rear side lifting points.
  • Lower the vehicle carefully onto the stands and gently check that it is stable.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as secondary support.

Step 4: Remove Both Rear Wheels

  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and slide them flat beneath the rocker-panel area as an extra precaution.

Step 5: Inspect the Rear Brakes

  • Use the safety glasses, gloves, non-chlorinated brake cleaner, nylon cleaning brush, and shop towels to clean loose debris.
  • Inspect the rotor surfaces for deep grooves, heat cracks, heavy rust, or a pronounced outer lip.
  • Compare the inner and outer pads. A large wear difference may indicate seized guide pins or a sticking caliper.
  • Inspect the caliper boots and parking-brake motor area for tears, fluid, or impact damage.

Step 6: Remove the First Rear Caliper

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin rotates, hold its flat section with the 17mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
  • Lift the caliper away from the pads and support it with the brake caliper hanger.
  • Do not pull, twist, or sharply bend the brake hose or parking-brake wiring.

Step 7: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Remove the inner and outer pads by hand.
  • Use the plastic trim tool to lift the stainless-steel abutment clips from the caliper bracket. Abutment clips are the small metal tracks on which the pads slide.
  • Note the position of the wear indicator before discarding the old pads.

Step 8: Check and Lubricate the Guide Pins

  • Pull each guide pin from its boot by hand and wipe it clean with shop towels.
  • Inspect for rust, pitting, binding, or torn rubber boots.
  • Apply a thin film of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant to the smooth guide-pin surfaces only.
  • Reinstall each pin in its original position and confirm that it slides freely.
  • Do not apply lubricant to the bolt threads, rotor, or pad friction material.

Step 9: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Confirm again that the scan tool successfully placed the electronic parking brake in service mode.
  • Position the old inner pad against the piston, then use the rear brake piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and straight into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Stop immediately if fluid approaches the top.
  • Do not force or manually power the electric parking-brake motor.
  • Compress slowly to protect the piston seal.

Step 10: Install the New Hardware and Pads

  • Press the new brake pad hardware clips fully into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the hardware.
  • Install the inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Keep all lubricant off the pad friction surfaces and rotor faces.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Swing the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Hold the guide pins with the 17mm open-end wrench if necessary.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both guide-pin bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 11 on the other rear wheel using the same listed tools.
  • Compare both sides for matching pad placement, hardware position, and hose routing.

Step 13: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack to raise your Malibu slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle fully.
  • Use the 19mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 140 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Exit Electronic Parking Brake Service Mode

  • Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the scan tool and select Chevrolet > Malibu > Chassis > Electronic Parking Brake > Brake Pad Replacement Mode > Apply or Exit.
  • Wait while both parking-brake motors calibrate and the scan tool confirms completion.
  • Read and clear electronic parking-brake fault codes only after correcting any reported problem.

Step 15: Seat the Pads Against the Rotors

  • With your Malibu stationary, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir and adjust to the correct line with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid if needed.
  • Use the electronic parking-brake switch to apply and release the parking brake twice.
  • Do not drive if the pedal remains soft or sinks toward the floor.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and confirm that the red brake and electronic parking-brake warning indicators turn off normally.
  • ✅ Hold the brake pedal and shift between Park and Drive while stationary to confirm a firm pedal.
  • ✅ Test the electronic parking brake on level ground before testing it on an incline.
  • ✅ Perform a slow test drive in a traffic-free area. Check for pulling, grinding, scraping, or warning messages.
  • ✅ Bed in the pads with 6-8 smooth stops from approximately 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Allow about 30 seconds of driving between stops and avoid activating ABS.
  • ✅ Avoid hard stops and holding the hot brakes at a standstill for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck the brake-fluid level and inspect for leaks after the test drive.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque to 140 Nm (100 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
