📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Edge on level ground with the transmission in Park.
- Chock the front wheels with wheel chocks so the vehicle cannot roll.
- Release the parking brake before entering maintenance mode.
- Set the electronic parking brake into maintenance mode using the switch-and-pedal sequence below.
- A brake caliper is the part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to stop the vehicle.
- A caliper piston is the round metal part inside the caliper that pushes the inner brake pad.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Enter Electronic Parking Brake Maintenance Mode
- Sit in the driver seat and switch the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Fully press and hold the accelerator pedal.
- Push and hold the electronic parking brake switch downward in the release position.
- While holding both, switch the ignition OFF, then switch it back ON within about 5 seconds.
- Keep holding the accelerator pedal and parking brake switch until the rear parking brake motors retract.
- Watch for a maintenance mode message or parking brake warning on the cluster.
- Release the accelerator pedal and parking brake switch.
- Switch the ignition OFF.
- Listen for the rear motors.
Step 2: Loosen the Rear Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each rear wheel lug nut about 1/2 turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
Step 3: Raise and Support the Rear of the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the approved rear jacking point to lift the rear of your Edge.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the approved rear support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Give the vehicle a light push to confirm it is stable before working near the wheels.
Step 4: Remove the Rear Wheels
- Use the 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both rear wheels and set them flat on the ground.
- Work one side at a time.
Step 5: Remove the Rear Caliper Bolts
- Locate the two small caliper slide pin bolts on the back side of the rear caliper.
- Use a 15mm wrench to hold the slide pin if it spins.
- Use a 13mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the upper and lower caliper bolts.
- A slide pin lets the caliper move side-to-side so both pads wear evenly.
Step 6: Lift Off and Support the Caliper
- Use a flathead screwdriver gently between the caliper and bracket if the caliper is tight.
- Lift the caliper off the brake pads.
- Hang the caliper from the suspension with a brake caliper hanger hook.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Use a flathead screwdriver if the pads are stuck in the clips.
- Remove the old pad hardware clips from the caliper bracket.
- Compare the old pads to the new rear brake pad set before installation.
Step 8: Clean the Caliper Bracket
- Wear safety glasses, nitrile gloves, and a dust mask.
- Use brake cleaner spray to clean the bracket where the pad hardware sits.
- Use a wire brush to remove rust and debris from the pad contact areas.
- Let the brake cleaner fully dry before adding grease.
Step 9: Install New Pad Hardware
- Snap the new rear brake pad hardware kit clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a thin film of brake grease to the areas where the brake pad ears touch the clips.
- Do not get grease on the pad friction material or rotor surface.
- Less grease is better.
Step 10: Compress the Rear Caliper Piston
- Use a brake caliper piston compression tool (specialty) to slowly press the caliper piston straight back into the caliper bore.
- A brake caliper piston compression tool pushes the piston back evenly so the thicker new pads will fit.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood; fluid level may rise as the piston retracts.
- Stop if the piston does not move smoothly. The parking brake may not be fully in maintenance mode.
Step 11: Install the New Rear Brake Pads
- Install the new rear brake pad set into the bracket by hand.
- Make sure the pad ears sit fully inside the new hardware clips.
- The friction material must face the rotor.
- The pads should slide slightly but should not rattle.
Step 12: Reinstall the Rear Caliper
- Lower the caliper over the new pads by hand.
- Make sure the brake hose is not twisted.
- Install the caliper bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 15mm wrench to hold the slide pin if needed.
- Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the caliper bolts to Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Repeat on the Other Rear Side
- Repeat Steps 5 through 12 on the other rear brake.
- Always replace rear brake pads in pairs so braking stays even.
Step 14: Reinstall the Rear Wheels
- Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 204 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Exit Electronic Parking Brake Maintenance Mode
- Switch the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Fully press and hold the accelerator pedal.
- Pull and hold the electronic parking brake switch upward in the apply position.
- While holding both, switch the ignition OFF, then switch it back ON within about 5 seconds.
- Keep holding the accelerator pedal and parking brake switch until the parking brake motors apply.
- Release the pedal and switch after the message clears or the motor noise stops.
Step 17: Seat the Brake Pads
- Before driving, press the brake pedal several times until it feels firm.
- Use your foot only; do not pump the pedal with the caliper removed.
- Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal still feels firm.
- Apply and release the electronic parking brake once using the switch.

- ✅ Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir and make sure it is between MIN and MAX.
- ✅ Verify the electronic parking brake applies and releases normally.
- ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area and confirm the vehicle stops straight without grinding or pulling.
