🔧 Canyon - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

This is a straightforward pad replacement, and you don't need an electronic parking-brake scan tool. Replace both rear sides together, inspect the rotors, clean the hardware, and compress each caliper piston slowly.

  • ⚠️ Support your Canyon with jack stands. Never work under a truck supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Chock both front wheels because the parking brake must remain released.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust may be harmful. Don't blow it away with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Never let the caliper hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease and brake cleaner off the pad friction material.
  • ⚠️ Don't press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection isn't required.

I'd use the Bosch QuietCast rear ceramic pad set. It includes hardware and lubricant, and its ceramic compound is a solid match for quiet daily driving. The Permatex synthetic brake lubricant is useful if you need extra grease. A tiny amount is enough. Brakes aren't the place for the “more is better” theory.


📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on firm, level ground and place the transmission in Park.
  • Chock both sides of both front tires securely.
  • Release the mechanical parking brake completely.
  • Allow the brakes to cool before touching them.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir.
  • Clean around the reservoir cap before opening it.
  • Remove only enough fluid to prevent overflow when the pistons are compressed.
  • No infotainment menu, electronic parking-brake mode, battery disconnect, or brake coding is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the rear wheel nuts

  • Keep the truck on the ground and leave the parking brake released.
  • Use the 22mm impact socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Don't remove the wheel nuts yet.

Step 2: Raise and support the rear

  • Position the 3-ton floor jack under the rear axle's approved lifting area.
  • Raise the rear until both wheels clear the ground.
  • Place the 3-ton jack stands under secure rear axle support points.
  • Lower the axle carefully onto the stands and gently test stability.

Step 3: Remove both rear wheels

  • Use the 22mm impact socket and breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both wheels and slide one wheel under each side of the frame as backup protection.

Step 4: Inspect the brake assembly

  • Use the safety glasses and inspect the rotor for deep grooves, blue heat spots, cracks, or a heavy outer lip.
  • Check the caliper and rubber hose for wet brake-fluid residue.
  • Compare inner and outer pad wear. A major difference usually indicates sticking hardware or a caliper problem.
  • The rear rotor's minimum usable thickness is 16mm. Measure it with a brake micrometer if wear is questionable.

Step 5: Remove the lower caliper guide bolt

  • Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the lower guide-pin bolt.
  • If the guide pin turns, hold its flats with the 15mm open-end wrench.
  • Remove the lower bolt and swing the caliper upward.
  • If access is tight, remove the upper guide-pin bolt the same way.

Step 6: Support the caliper

  • Attach the brake caliper hanger and support the caliper from the suspension or frame.
  • Don't stretch, twist, or kink the rubber brake hose.
  • A caliper hanger is simply a strong hook that keeps the caliper's weight off the hose.

Step 7: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Slide both old pads out of the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the old stainless-steel abutment clips from the bracket.
  • Note which pad carries the mechanical wear indicator and match that position during installation.
  • Abutment clips are the stainless pieces that let the pads slide inside the bracket.

Step 8: Clean the caliper bracket

  • Place the plastic drain pan below the brake assembly.
  • Spray brake cleaner onto the bracket and wipe away residue.
  • Use the stainless-steel brake brush to clean rust and packed dust from beneath the hardware clips.
  • Don't grind away bracket metal. You only want rust and debris removed.
  • Clean hardware seats prevent crooked pad wear.

Step 9: Inspect and lubricate the guide pins

  • Pull one guide pin out at a time by hand.
  • Inspect each rubber boot for tears and each pin for rust, scoring, or stiffness.
  • Wipe the pin clean and apply a thin film of compatible synthetic brake lubricant.
  • Reinstall the pin and confirm it slides smoothly before servicing the other pin.
  • Don't use petroleum grease because it can damage the rubber boots.

Step 10: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the piston face.
  • Use the disc brake piston compression tool to push the piston straight inward, slowly and evenly.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Remove excess fluid if it approaches the top.
  • This piston pushes straight inward. It doesn't need to be rotated.
  • Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or requires excessive force. That can indicate a seized caliper.

Step 11: Install the new hardware

  • Press the new abutment clips into the clean bracket by hand.
  • Use the plastic trim tool if gentle pressure is needed to seat a clip fully.
  • Apply a very thin film of brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the clips.
  • Don't put lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.

Step 12: Install the new pads

  • Slide the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Position the mechanical wear indicator to match the old pad's location.
  • Confirm both pads slide without binding but aren't loose in the bracket.

Step 13: Reinstall the caliper

  • Swing the caliper over the new pads without twisting the hose.
  • If it won't fit, use the disc brake piston compression tool to seat the piston completely.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Hold the guide-pin flats with the 15mm open-end wrench and tighten the bolts using the 13mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque the rear caliper guide-pin bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Repeat on the opposite side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the other rear wheel.
  • Always replace brake pads across the complete axle. Never replace only one side.

Step 15: Reinstall the wheels

  • Mount both wheels and install the wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 22mm impact socket and ratchet to snug the nuts in a crossing pattern.
  • Don't apply final torque while the truck is on the jack stands.

Step 16: Lower and torque the wheels

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise the axle slightly.
  • Remove the jack stands and lower the truck completely.
  • Use the 22mm impact socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crossing pattern.
  • Torque the wheel nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Check the brake-fluid level and adjust it only to the proper mark.
  • With the engine off, slowly press the brake pedal several times until it becomes firm.
  • Don't move the truck until the pedal is firm and remains firm under steady pressure.
  • Start the engine and verify normal pedal feel.
  • Apply and release the parking brake to verify normal mechanical operation.
  • Check around both rear calipers for fluid leaks or loose components.
  • Drive slowly in a safe area and test the brakes before entering traffic.
  • Bed in the pads with about 5 moderate stops from 40 to 10 mph, allowing roughly 30 seconds between stops.
  • Avoid hard stops and holding the pedal firmly after a hot stop for the first 200 miles unless an emergency requires it.
  • Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 50 miles.
