Replacing the rear brake pads requires removing both rear calipers, compressing their pistons, and installing new pads and hardware. Your Tahoe uses a separate drum-style parking brake inside each rear rotor, so no electronic parking-brake service mode is required.

  • ⚠️ Work on level, solid ground and support your Tahoe with jack stands—never rely on the floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Release the parking brake before removing the rear calipers. Use wheel chocks at both sides of a front tire to prevent movement.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust may be harmful. Do not use compressed air or blow dust from the brakes.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while either rear caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Never allow a caliper to hang from its rubber brake hose.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tahoe on level pavement. Shift the transmission into Park and switch off the engine.
  • Release the foot-operated parking brake completely.
  • Place heavy-duty wheel chocks securely in front of and behind one front tire.
  • Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir near the driver-side firewall.
  • If the brake fluid is at the maximum line, use a turkey baster to remove a small amount into a drain pan. Compressing the caliper pistons will raise the fluid level.
  • No infotainment setting, scan tool, electronic parking-brake mode, or battery disconnection is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • Keep your Tahoe on the ground and use a 22mm impact-rated socket with a 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts yet.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear

  • Position the 3-ton floor jack beneath the center of the rear axle housing. Do not place the jack beneath the thin differential cover.
  • Raise the rear until both tires clear the ground.
  • Place 3-ton jack stands beneath the solid rear axle tubes, close to the suspension spring mounts.
  • Lower the axle carefully onto the stands, then leave the floor jack lightly touching the axle as backup support.
  • Gently push the body to verify that the vehicle is stable before working underneath or beside it.

Step 3: Remove Both Rear Wheels

  • Use the 22mm impact-rated socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and lay them flat away from the work area.
  • Complete one brake assembly at a time so the opposite side remains available as a reference.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Place the drain pan beneath the brake assembly and apply non-chlorinated brake cleaner. Use the nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove loose dust.
  • Check the rotor for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust, or blue heat spots. A damaged or undersized rotor requires replacement or professional measurement.
  • Inspect the caliper and rubber brake hose for wetness. Wet brake fluid indicates a leak that must be repaired before driving.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper

  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin turns with its bolt, hold the guide pin with an 18mm combination wrench while loosening the bolt with the 13mm socket.
  • Lift the caliper away from the pads. Use a brake-caliper hanger to suspend it from a strong suspension point.
  • Do not pull, twist, or support the caliper by its brake hose.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully release the stainless-steel pad clips from the bracket.
  • Observe the position of any wear indicator before discarding the old pads.
  • Compare both pads. A large difference in thickness can indicate a seized guide pin or caliper problem.

Step 7: Clean and Lubricate the Contact Points

  • Place the drain pan below the bracket. Apply non-chlorinated brake cleaner and scrub the pad-support areas with the nylon brake-cleaning brush.
  • Install the new rear brake pad hardware clips by hand. Make sure every clip sits flat and fully engaged.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant to the pad ears where they slide against the clips.
  • Do not place lubricant on the rotor or the friction surface of either pad.
  • A thin lubricant film prevents dirt buildup.

Step 8: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place the old inner brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the disc-brake piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper bore.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. If it approaches the top, remove excess fluid with the turkey baster and place it in the drain pan.
  • Stop if the piston will not retract smoothly. Forcing a seized piston can damage the caliper.
  • The piston presses straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.

Step 9: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket by hand in the same orientation as the original pads.
  • Slide each pad gently by hand to confirm its ears move freely in the new hardware.
  • Do not grind or modify the pad backing plates to make them fit.

Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the brake-caliper hanger and place the caliper over the new pads without twisting the hose.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Hold each guide pin with the 18mm combination wrench if necessary, then tighten its bolt using the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch-drive ratchet.
  • Finish with the 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench and 13mm socket: Torque the caliper guide-pin bolts to 42 Nm (31 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 10 on the other rear brake assembly using the same listed tools.
  • Confirm that both calipers are secured, both hoses are untwisted, and no tools remain near the brakes.

Step 12: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Install both wheels and start every wheel nut by hand.
  • Use the 22mm impact-rated socket and 1/2-inch-drive breaker bar to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to lift the axle slightly, remove the 3-ton jack stands, and lower your Tahoe until the tires are firmly on the ground.
  • Use the 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench and 22mm impact-rated socket to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern: Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Before starting the engine or moving your Tahoe, press and release the brake pedal several times until it feels firm. This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir and correct the level to the maximum line only if needed. Do not reuse removed brake fluid.
  • Inspect both rear calipers for leaks and verify that the brake hoses are not twisted.
  • Start the engine and hold firm pedal pressure for approximately 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady rather than sinking toward the floor.
  • Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing brief cooling time between stops. Avoid complete stops with the pedal held down while the brakes are very hot.
  • Avoid hard braking and heavy towing for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
  • Recheck the wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
