📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Highlander on level, solid ground and shift the transmission into Park.
  • 📍 Release the foot-operated parking brake completely.
  • 📍 Place wheel chocks securely in front of and behind both front tires.
  • 📍 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is at the MAX line, use the 60mL fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
  • 📍 Do not leave the reservoir open. Reinstall its cap loosely while you work.
  • 📍 No infotainment menu, electronic parking-brake mode, or scan-tool command is required.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts while your Highlander is still on the ground.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack at the specified rear lifting point to raise your Highlander.
  • Position the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced rear side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle carefully onto the stands, then gently shake the body to verify that it is stable.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as a backup without carrying the vehicle’s weight.

Step 3: Remove Both Rear Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
  • Complete one brake side at a time.

Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly

  • Put on the nitrile mechanic gloves and ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.
  • Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the nylon brake cleaning brush to remove loose dirt.
  • Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust, or blue heat marks. A damaged or undersized rotor must be replaced or professionally measured before continuing.
  • Check the caliper and rubber brake hose for wetness. Wet brake fluid indicates a leak that must be repaired.

Step 5: Remove the Caliper

  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
  • A slide pin allows the caliper to move sideways as the pads wear.
  • Lift the caliper away from the pads without pulling or twisting the brake hose.
  • Support the caliper with the brake caliper hanger attached to a solid suspension point.

Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer brake pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the stainless-steel pad-support clips from the bracket.
  • Note the location of the wear indicator on the original inner pad and install the new pad in the same orientation.
  • Compare the old pads. Uneven wear can indicate a seized slide pin or sticking caliper.

Step 7: Clean and Lubricate the Contact Points

  • Use brake cleaner and the nylon brake cleaning brush to clean the caliper-bracket areas beneath the clips.
  • Install the new rear brake pad hardware by hand. Use the small flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to seat the clips gently.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad tabs touch the hardware.
  • Do not place lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.

Step 8: Check the Slide Pins

  • Pull each slide pin from its rubber boot by hand, one at a time.
  • Wipe the pin clean and inspect it for rust, scoring, or binding.
  • Apply a thin coating of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant, then reinstall the pin into its original position.
  • Confirm that each pin moves smoothly and that its rubber boot is fully seated.

Step 9: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place an old brake pad against the piston face.
  • Use the rear caliper piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and straight into the caliper bore.
  • This piston presses straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the 60mL fluid syringe if the fluid approaches the top.
  • Stop if the piston will not move with moderate force. A seized caliper must be replaced.

Step 10: Install the New Pads

  • Fit the new inner and outer pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad tabs sit fully inside the new support clips.
  • Confirm that the friction material faces the rotor on both pads.
  • Verify that the pads can slide slightly without binding.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the caliper hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads by hand.
  • Do not force the caliper into place or twist the brake hose.
  • Start both slide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten both slide-pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 11 on the other rear wheel using the same listed tools.
  • Always replace rear brake pads as a complete axle set.

Step 13: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern while the vehicle remains supported.
  • Do not apply final torque until the tires are on the ground.

Step 14: Lower and Torque the Wheels

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise your Highlander slightly, then remove both 2-ton jack stands.
  • Lower the vehicle carefully until the tires rest fully on the ground.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure

  • Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move your Highlander until the pedal feels firm and consistent.
  • Inspect the brake-fluid reservoir and adjust the level to the MAX mark with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid if necessary.
  • Secure the reservoir cap by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine while holding the brake pedal. Confirm that the pedal remains firm.
  • ✅ Apply and release the parking brake to confirm normal operation.
  • ✅ Check around both rear calipers for fluid leaks or loose components.
  • ✅ Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • ✅ Bed in the new pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing brief cooling between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking or holding the hot brakes at a complete stop during the first 300 km unless required for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck the wheel-nut torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
