🔧 Sierra 1500 - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the rear brake pads involves lifting the rear of your Sierra 1500, opening each brake caliper, compressing its piston, and installing new pads. This truck uses a separate drum-style parking brake inside each rear rotor, so no electronic parking-brake service mode or scan tool is required.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a level, solid surface and firmly chock both front wheels.
  • ⚠️ Support the truck with jack stands under the rear axle. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while either caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can be harmful. Do not use compressed air to clean it.
  • ⚠️ Brake fluid damages paint. Wipe spills up immediately and rinse with water.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park your Sierra 1500 on level pavement, shift into Park, and switch off the ignition.
  • 📋 Place wheel chocks tightly against the front and rear of both front tires.
  • 📋 The parking brake uses small shoes inside the rear rotors. No infotainment setting, electronic retraction, or scan-tool command is required.
  • 📋 Open the hood and locate the brake-fluid reservoir. Clean around its cap before opening it.
  • 📋 Verify that the new pads and hardware match the removed components before installation.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts while the tires are still supporting the truck.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear Axle

  • Use the 3-ton hydraulic floor jack beneath the center of the rear axle housing. Keep the jack saddle away from the differential cover.
  • Raise the rear tires clear of the ground.
  • Position the 3-ton jack stands beneath the axle tubes, near the rear leaf-spring mounting areas.
  • Lower the axle onto the stands, then gently push the truck to confirm it is stable.
  • Leave the floor jack lightly contacting the axle as a secondary support.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels

  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
  • Work on one brake at a time so the assembled side remains a reference.

Step 4: Check the Brake-Fluid Level

  • Wear ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
  • Remove the reservoir cap by hand.
  • If the fluid is at the MAX line, use the brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount into the plastic drain pan. Compressing the caliper pistons will raise the fluid level.
  • Do not reuse removed brake fluid.

Step 5: Create Piston Clearance

  • Use the large flat-blade screwdriver between the old inner pad and rotor to gently push the caliper piston inward a small amount.
  • Do not pry against the piston’s rubber dust boot or deeply gouge the rotor.
  • Slow pressure prevents fluid overflow.

Step 6: Remove the Caliper

  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin turns with its bolt, hold the guide pin using the 18mm open-end wrench.
  • Lift the caliper away from the bracket without twisting the brake hose.
  • Support the caliper from the suspension with mechanic’s wire. Never hang it by the hose.

Step 7: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Remove the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the large flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove the stainless-steel abutment clips.
  • Abutment clips are the metal pieces on which the ends of the pads slide.
  • Note the position of any wear indicator before discarding the old pads.

Step 8: Inspect the Brakes

  • Inspect the rotor surfaces for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust scaling, or blue heat spots.
  • Check that the rotor is above its stamped minimum thickness. Rotor measurement requires a brake micrometer and professional resurfacing specifications.
  • Inspect the caliper piston boot and guide-pin boots for tears or brake-fluid leakage.
  • Stop the repair if a caliper leaks, a guide pin is seized, or a rotor is damaged.
  • Compare left and right pad wear. Strongly uneven wear usually indicates a sticking caliper or guide pin.

Step 9: Clean and Lubricate the Bracket

  • Place the plastic drain pan beneath the brake assembly.
  • Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the small nylon detailing brush to clean the bracket’s pad-contact areas.
  • Install the new abutment clips by hand.
  • Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad tabs contact the clips.
  • Do not place lubricant on the rotor or pad friction surfaces.

Step 10: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the piston.
  • Use the brake piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and completely into the caliper bore.
  • This piston presses straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and use the brake-fluid syringe if the level approaches the opening.
  • Confirm that the rubber piston boot is not pinched or twisted.

Step 11: Install the New Pads

  • Install the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Place each pad in the same orientation as its matching old pad, including the wear indicator.
  • Make sure both pad tabs sit fully inside the new abutment clips and slide without binding.

Step 12: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the supporting mechanic’s wire and lower the caliper over the new pads.
  • Do not force the caliper or twist the brake hose.
  • Install the new guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Hold each guide pin with the 18mm open-end wrench if necessary.
  • Use the 13mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten each guide-pin bolt to 38 Nm (28 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 5 through 12 on the other rear brake using the same listed tools.
  • Always replace rear brake pads on both sides as a complete axle set.
  • Verify that all four guide-pin bolts are tightened to 38 Nm (28 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Install both wheels and thread the wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 3-ton hydraulic floor jack to raise the axle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the truck completely.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

Step 15: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure

  • Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times by foot until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move the truck until the pedal feels normal and firm.
  • Check the reservoir and adjust the level to the MAX mark with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if needed.
  • Install the reservoir cap securely by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine while holding the brake pedal. Confirm that the pedal remains firm and does not slowly sink.
  • ✅ Check both rear calipers and the ground beneath the truck for fluid leaks.
  • ✅ At walking speed, make several gentle stops in a safe area before entering traffic.
  • ✅ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing brief cooling time between stops. Do not come to a complete stop with hot brakes unless traffic requires it.
  • ✅ Drive for 10-15 minutes without heavy braking to let the brakes cool.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
