🔧 Pathfinder - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the rear brake pads involves removing both rear calipers, compressing their pistons, and installing new pads and hardware. Your Pathfinder uses a separate drum-style parking brake inside the rear rotor, so no electronic parking-brake service mode is required.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on level, solid ground and support your Pathfinder with jack stands. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Release the parking brake before removing the calipers. Use wheel chocks at both sides of a front tire to prevent movement.
  • ⚠️ Replace the pads on both rear wheels so braking remains balanced.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while either caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Never allow a caliper to hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust may be harmful. Do not blow it away with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park your Pathfinder on level pavement, shift the CVT into Park, and switch off the engine.
  • 📋 Leave the parking brake released because it acts inside the rear brake rotors.
  • 📋 Place wheel chocks tightly against the front and rear of one front tire.
  • 📋 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is near the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the pistons.
  • 📋 Do not leave the reservoir uncovered. Brake fluid absorbs moisture and damages paint.
  • 📋 No infotainment menu, scan tool, coding, or electronic parking-brake service mode is needed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the rear wheel nuts

  • Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Keep the tires on the ground while loosening the nuts. Do not remove them yet.

Step 2: Raise and support the rear

  • Use the hydraulic floor jack under the approved rear lifting point to raise your Pathfinder.
  • Place the jack stands beneath the reinforced rear side support points. A jack stand is a rigid support that safely holds the vehicle after lifting.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands and verify that it is stable before continuing.

Step 3: Remove both rear wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
  • Finish one brake side before dismantling the other.

Step 4: Inspect the brakes

  • Use the safety glasses, nitrile gloves, non-chlorinated brake cleaner, and nylon brake-cleaning brush to remove loose dust.
  • Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust, or blue heat spots. A damaged or undersized rotor must be replaced or professionally measured before new pads are installed.
  • Inspect the brake hose for cracking, wetness, or swelling. Stop the repair if the hose or caliper is leaking.

Step 5: Remove the caliper

  • Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin rotates, hold its flat section with the 19mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket. Use the brake caliper hanger to suspend it from the suspension.
  • Do not twist, stretch, or place weight on the brake hose.

Step 6: Remove the old pads and hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully remove the stainless-steel pad clips from the bracket.
  • Compare the old pads. Uneven wear can indicate a seized guide pin, sticking pad, or faulty caliper.
  • Note the position of any wear indicator on the old pads and match that arrangement when installing the new set.

Step 7: Clean the caliper bracket

  • Place the disposable drain pan below the brake assembly.
  • Use the non-chlorinated brake cleaner and nylon brake-cleaning brush to clean the pad-contact areas on the bracket.
  • Install the new hardware clips by hand. Use the plastic trim tool to seat them fully without bending them.
  • Apply a very thin layer of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant to the pad ears where they touch the clips.
  • Keep lubricant away from the rotor and pad friction surfaces.

Step 8: Check the guide pins

  • Slide each guide pin in and out by hand. It should move smoothly and its rubber boot should be intact.
  • If a pin is dry but undamaged, wipe it clean and apply a light coating of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant.
  • Do not interchange the upper and lower pins. Stop if a pin is rusted, bent, or seized.

Step 9: Compress the caliper piston

  • Place one old pad against the piston, then use the disc brake piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and straight into the caliper.
  • This piston presses directly inward; it does not need to be rotated.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Stop before fluid reaches or spills above the MAX line.
  • Inspect the rubber piston boot and make sure it is not twisted, pinched, or torn.

Step 10: Install the new pads

  • Fit the new inner and outer pads into the clean hardware clips by hand.
  • Confirm that each pad slides freely in the bracket without excessive looseness.
  • Position the wear indicator in the same location as the original pad.
  • Do not touch the pad friction material or rotor face with greasy gloves.

Step 11: Reinstall the caliper

  • Remove the brake caliper hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the hose.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • If needed, hold the guide pin with the 19mm open-end wrench.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both guide-pin bolts to 32 Nm (24 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Repeat on the opposite side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 11 on the other rear wheel using the same listed tools.
  • Compare both completed sides and confirm that the hoses, pad clips, and wear indicators are correctly positioned.

Step 13: Reinstall the wheels

  • Install each rear wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the hydraulic floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
  • With the full vehicle weight on the tires, tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Before starting the engine, press and release the brake pedal several times until it feels firm. This seats the pistons against the new pads.
  • ✅ Check the brake-fluid reservoir and adjust to the MAX line with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if necessary. Do not overfill it.
  • ✅ Start the engine and confirm that the pedal remains firm. Check around both calipers for leaks.
  • ✅ Apply and release the parking brake to verify normal operation, even though its shoes were not disturbed.
  • ✅ Perform a slow test in a traffic-free area. Verify that your Pathfinder stops straight and has no scraping, pulling, or unusually soft pedal.
  • ✅ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from about 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Allow approximately 30 seconds between stops and avoid holding the hot brakes while stationary.
  • ✅ Avoid hard braking for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
