📋 Before You Begin

- 🧴 Open the hood and check the brake-fluid reservoir. If the fluid is already at the MAX line, use a brake fluid suction syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts
- Use a 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while your Sienna is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear
- Use the 3-ton floor jack at the designated rear-center lifting point, then position 3-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced rear side support points.
- Lower your Sienna slowly onto the stands. Give the body a gentle push to verify that it is stable.
- Keep the floor jack nearby as secondary support.
Step 3: Remove Both Rear Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the rear wheel nuts.
- Remove both rear wheels and slide them underneath the side of the vehicle as an additional safety measure.
Step 4: Inspect the Brakes
- Use the safety glasses and inspect both rear rotors for deep grooves, blue heat spots, cracks, or heavy rust.
- Check the calipers, hoses, and piston boots for wet brake-fluid leakage or torn rubber.
- Stop the repair if a caliper leaks, a piston boot is damaged, or one old pad is much thinner than its partner. These conditions can indicate a seized caliper or guide pin.
Step 5: Remove the First Caliper
- Work on one side at a time so the assembled opposite side remains available as a reference.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
- If a guide pin turns with its bolt, hold the pin with a 17mm combination wrench while using the 14mm socket.
- Lift the caliper away from the pads and support it with the caliper support hook.
- Do not disconnect the brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Remove the inner and outer pads by hand, noting the position of the wear indicator and anti-squeal shims.
- Remove the stainless pad-support hardware by hand.
- Use a small nylon detailing brush and non-chlorinated brake cleaner to clean the caliper-bracket areas where the hardware sits.
- Do not apply grease to the rotor or pad friction material.
Step 7: Check the Guide Pins
- Pull each guide pin outward by hand and confirm that it moves smoothly.
- Inspect the rubber boots for tears and corrosion beneath the boots.
- Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake grease to a dry guide pin, then reinstall it by hand without trapping air in the boot.
- Do not use petroleum-based grease because it can damage the rubber components.
Step 8: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Place one old brake pad against the piston face.
- Use the brake caliper piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and straight into the caliper bore.
- The piston presses straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake fluid suction syringe if the fluid approaches the reservoir opening.
- Stop if the piston binds or requires excessive force. A seized piston requires caliper repair or replacement.
Step 9: Install the New Hardware and Pads
- Install the new rear brake pad hardware into the clean caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake grease only where the pad ears contact the hardware.
- Transfer or install the correct anti-squeal shims according to the pad set’s supplied positions.
- Install the new inner and outer pads by hand, matching the original wear-indicator position.
- Keep grease off the friction surfaces and rotor.
Step 10: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the caliper support hook and lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten both guide-pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
- If a pin rotates, hold it with the 17mm combination wrench while tightening its bolt.
Step 11: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Use the same 14mm socket, 17mm combination wrench, brake caliper piston compression tool, and cleaning supplies to replace the pads on the other rear wheel.
- Compare both completed sides before reinstalling the wheels.
Step 12: Reinstall the Rear Wheels
- Position each wheel on its hub and install the wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise your Sienna slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it completely.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Seat the Brake Pads
- Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Do not move your Sienna until the pedal feels firm and consistent.
- Check the brake-fluid level. Add fresh DOT 3 brake fluid only if it is below the specified range.
- Close the reservoir cap securely.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should not continue sinking.
- 🔍 Check around both rear calipers and the brake-fluid reservoir for leakage.
- 🛑 Test the brakes at walking speed in a traffic-free area before normal driving.
- 🚗 Unless the pad manufacturer specifies another method, make 6-8 moderate stops from approximately 30 mph to 5 mph. Allow about 30 seconds between stops and avoid coming to a complete stop with hot brakes.
