- Park your Prius on firm, level ground. Shift to Park, apply the parking brake, and switch the vehicle completely off.
- Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid level. If it is near the MAX line, use the brake fluid syringe to remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
- Keep the driver’s door open and lower a window before disconnecting power. Do not press the brake pedal afterward.
- Use the 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative terminal from the 12-volt battery. Isolate the cable so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
- Wait at least two minutes before working on the brakes. This allows stored brake-system pressure to settle.
- No infotainment setting, electronic parking-brake service mode, or high-voltage isolation is required for this configuration.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Secure and Raise the Rear
- Use the rubber wheel chocks to block both sides of the front wheels.
- Release the parking brake after the front wheels are securely chocked. The rear calipers must be free from parking-brake tension.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut approximately one-quarter turn.
- Use the floor jack at the rear center lifting point, then place the jack stands beneath the two rear side support points.
- Lower your Prius gently onto the jack stands and verify that it is stable.
Step 2: Remove the Rear Wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and ratchet to remove the five nuts from each rear wheel.
- Remove both wheels and slide them beneath the side sills as an additional safety measure.
Step 3: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Use the non-chlorinated brake cleaner and nylon brake cleaning brush to remove loose dust.
- Check each rotor for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust, or a pronounced outer lip.
- Check the caliper boots and brake hoses for splits, wetness, or fluid leakage. Stop the repair if a hydraulic leak is present.
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver only as a visual pointer to note the position of the wear indicator and pad hardware before disassembly.
Step 4: Remove the Caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide-pin bolt.
- Pivot the caliper upward. If clearance is limited, use the 14mm socket to remove the upper slide-pin bolt as well.
- Use the caliper support hook to support the caliper from the suspension. Do not pull, twist, or stretch the brake hose.
- Photograph the pad positions before removal.
Step 5: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware
- Use gloved hands to slide the inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket.
- Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift the stainless pad-support hardware from the bracket.
- Use the brake cleaner and nylon brake cleaning brush to clean the pad contact surfaces.
- Do not scratch the rubber slide-pin boots with the screwdriver.
Step 6: Retract the Caliper Piston
- Place an old brake pad against the piston, then use the rear brake caliper piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- This configuration uses a straight compression action. Do not force the piston to rotate.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake fluid syringe if the level approaches the top.
- Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or requires excessive force. A seized caliper must be repaired or replaced.
Step 7: Install the New Hardware and Pads
- Use gloved hands to snap the new pad-support hardware completely into the caliper bracket.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake grease to the pad ears where they contact the hardware.
- Keep grease completely off the rotor, pad friction surfaces, and rubber piston boot.
- Install the new inner and outer pads by hand. Position the wear indicators the same way as the original Toyota pads.
- Confirm that both pads slide freely in the bracket without excessive looseness.
Step 8: Reinstall the Caliper
- Use your fingers to confirm that both slide pins move smoothly and that their rubber boots are seated.
- Swing the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
- Start each slide-pin bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the rear caliper slide-pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Repeat on the Opposite Side
- Use the same 14mm socket, piston compression tool, and cleaning tools to replace the pads on the other rear brake.
- Use the torque wrench to tighten that side’s slide-pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
- Verify that both brake hoses are untwisted and all rubber boots are properly seated.
Step 10: Reinstall the Wheels
- Use gloved hands to install each wheel and start all five nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the floor jack to raise your Prius slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle completely.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Restore Brake-System Power
- Use the 10mm wrench to reconnect and securely tighten the negative 12-volt battery terminal.
- Do not switch your Prius to READY yet.
- Press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm. This seats the pistons and pads against the rotors.
- Apply and release the parking brake several times to confirm normal operation.
Step 12: Check the Brake Fluid
- Inspect the brake-fluid reservoir visually and confirm the level is between MIN and MAX.
- If needed, add only fresh Toyota DOT 3 brake fluid from a sealed container.
- Use brake cleaner and the nylon brush to remove any accidental contamination before driving.

- ✅ Switch your Prius to READY and confirm that the red brake, ABS, and slip-indicator lights turn off normally.
- ✅ Keep your foot on the brake and shift between Park, Reverse, and Drive before moving. The pedal must remain firm.
