📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Corolla on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks in front of both front tires.
  • 🔓 Release the parking brake before lifting the rear of the vehicle.
  • 🧴 Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood. If it is completely full, remove a small amount with a clean fluid syringe before pushing caliper pistons back.
  • 📘 A brake caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor to stop the car.
  • 📘 A rotor is the round metal disc behind the wheel.
  • 📘 A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness so they are not too loose or too tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet to loosen each rear wheel lug nut about 1/2 turn.
  • Do this while the tires are still touching the ground so the wheels do not spin.
  • Break them loose before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Rear of the Car

  • Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the rear center jacking point or approved rear side jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved rear support points.
  • Gently lower your Corolla onto the jack stands.
  • Lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable before removing wheels.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to remove the rear lug nuts fully.
  • Remove both rear wheels and set them flat under the car as an added safety backup.

Step 4: Remove the Lower Caliper Slide Bolt

  • Look at the back side of the rear brake caliper.
  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide bolt.
  • If the slide pin spins, hold the pin with a 17mm open-end wrench while removing the bolt with the 14mm socket.
  • A slide pin lets the caliper move slightly as the brakes apply and release.

Step 5: Swing the Caliper Up

  • Use your hand to swing the caliper upward like a small door.
  • If it feels stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver gently between the caliper and pad to create a little movement.
  • Do not pull hard on the rubber brake hose.
  • Never let the caliper hang by the hose.

Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Use your hands to slide the old inner and outer pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • If they are tight, use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry them out.
  • Notice how the pads and metal clips are positioned before removing them.

Step 7: Remove and Clean the Pad Hardware

  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old metal pad clips from the caliper bracket.
  • Use a small wire brush to clean the bracket surfaces where the clips sit.
  • Spray the area with brake cleaner aerosol can and wipe with shop towels.
  • Pad hardware means the thin metal clips that help the pads slide smoothly and quietly.

Step 8: Install the New Pad Hardware

  • Push the new rear brake pad hardware kit clips into the same positions as the old clips.
  • Use your fingers to make sure each clip sits flat and fully seated.
  • Apply a very thin layer of brake caliper slide pin grease only to the pad contact points on the clips.
  • Do not get grease on the rotor or pad friction material.

Step 9: Retract the Rear Caliper Piston

  • Use the rear disc brake piston cube tool (specialty) with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and 3/8-inch drive extension.
  • Fit the cube tool into the slots on the caliper piston.
  • Turn the piston clockwise while pressing inward until it is fully seated in the caliper.
  • Watch the brake fluid reservoir while doing this. If fluid rises near the top, stop and remove a small amount safely.
  • The rear piston must be turned in because the parking brake mechanism is built into the caliper.

Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Slide the new rear brake pad set into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad friction material faces the rotor.
  • The pads should move smoothly in the clips without forcing them.
  • If they bind, stop and clean again.

Step 11: Lower the Caliper Over the Pads

  • Swing the caliper down over the new pads by hand.
  • If the caliper will not fit over the pads, use the rear disc brake piston cube tool (specialty) again to retract the piston a little more.
  • Do not force the caliper with bolts.

Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Caliper Slide Bolt

  • Start the lower caliper slide bolt by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket to snug the bolt.
  • If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm open-end wrench.
  • Use the torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs and 14mm socket to tighten the bolt to Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the Other Rear Side

  • Use the same tools and steps on the opposite rear brake.
  • Always replace rear brake pads in pairs so braking stays even.

Step 14: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Place each wheel back onto the hub by hand.
  • Install the lug nuts finger-tight first.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Car and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift your Corolla slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
  • Lower the car fully to the ground.
  • Use the torque wrench rated to 100 ft-lbs and 21mm lug nut socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
  • This moves the caliper pistons back out against the new pads.
  • Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Check the brake fluid level and make sure it is between the MIN and MAX marks.
  • ✅ Start the engine and press the brake pedal again. It should feel steady, not sink to the floor.
  • ✅ Reapply and release the parking brake a few times to make sure it works normally.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly in a safe area and make several gentle stops.
  • ✅ Bed in the pads with 8-10 moderate stops from about 30 mph to 5 mph, letting the brakes cool briefly between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid hard panic stops for the first 200 miles unless needed for safety.
  • ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive: Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
