🔧 Avalon - Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Replacing the rear brake pads requires lifting the rear of your Avalon, removing both calipers, compressing the pistons, and installing new pads and hardware. Your Avalon uses a separate parking-brake mechanism inside the rear rotor, so the caliper pistons press straight inward rather than twisting.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Avalon on level pavement, shift into Park, switch off the engine, and release the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place rubber wheel chocks firmly in front of and behind both front tires.
  • 🔍 Check the brake-fluid reservoir under the hood. If it is at the maximum line, remove a small amount with the brake-fluid syringe before compressing the caliper pistons.
  • 📱 No infotainment setting, scan-tool command, or electronic parking-brake service mode is required.
  • 🔧 Replace the pads on both rear wheels so braking remains balanced.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Lug Nuts

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear lug nut approximately one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts while the tires are still supporting the vehicle.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear

  • Use the 2-ton floor jack at the rear center lifting point shown in the owner’s manual.
  • Position the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced rear side support points, then lower your Avalon gently onto them.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching the lifting point as a backup without carrying the vehicle’s weight.
  • Push the body gently with your hands to verify that it is stable before continuing.

Step 3: Remove Both Rear Wheels

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and place them flat away from your work area.

Step 4: Remove the First Rear Caliper

  • Work on one side at a time so the assembled opposite side remains available as a reference.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
  • Lift the caliper away from the pads. If it is snug, use the medium flat-blade screwdriver gently between the old pad and rotor to create a little clearance.
  • Hang the caliper from the suspension with the brake caliper hanger. Do not let it hang from the flexible brake hose.

Step 5: Remove the Old Pads and Hardware

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the medium flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless pad-support clips from the bracket.
  • Use the small nylon cleaning brush and non-chlorinated brake cleaner to clean the clip mounting surfaces.
  • Catch residue with disposable shop towels. Avoid spraying cleaner directly onto rubber boots.
  • Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, cracks, heavy rust, or blue heat spots. A damaged or undersized rotor must be replaced before installing new pads.

Step 6: Check and Lubricate the Slide Pins

  • Pull each slide pin from its rubber boot by hand, one at a time.
  • Wipe the pin clean with disposable shop towels and inspect it for rust, scoring, or binding.
  • Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant with a gloved finger, then reinstall the pin into its original location.
  • Confirm that each pin moves smoothly and that its rubber boot is fully seated.
  • Do not use petroleum grease on rubber boots.

Step 7: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the piston, then install the disc brake piston compression tool. This tool presses the piston evenly back into the caliper.
  • Slowly tighten the disc brake piston compression tool until the piston is fully seated. The piston presses straight inward; do not rotate it.
  • Check the reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake-fluid syringe if the fluid approaches the reservoir opening.
  • Stop if the piston is extremely difficult to move or if brake fluid leaks from the caliper.

Step 8: Install the New Hardware and Pads

  • Press the new rear brake pad fitting hardware into the caliper bracket by hand. Make sure every clip sits completely flat.
  • Install the supplied shims on the new pads according to their matching shape and position.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant with a gloved finger only where the pad ears contact the stainless clips.
  • Keep all lubricant away from the pad friction material and rotor surfaces.
  • Slide the inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand. Position the wear-indicator tab in the same location as the original pad.
  • The pads should slide without being forced.

Step 9: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the brake caliper hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads by hand.
  • Do not twist the brake hose or damage the slide-pin boots.
  • Start both slide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten both slide-pin bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 9 on the other rear wheel using the same listed tools.
  • Compare pad, shim, clip, and wear-indicator placement with the completed first side before tightening the caliper bolts.

Step 11: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Clean obvious dirt from the wheel mounting faces with the small nylon cleaning brush and disposable shop towels.
  • Install each wheel and start all lug nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the lug nuts lightly in a star pattern.
  • Use the 2-ton floor jack to lift your Avalon slightly, remove the 2-ton jack stands, and lower the vehicle completely.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 12: Restore Brake-Pedal Pressure

  • With the engine off and transmission in Park, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times by foot until it feels firm.
  • Do not drive your Avalon if the pedal remains soft or sinks toward the floor.
  • Inspect both calipers visually for brake-fluid leaks.

✅ After Repair

  • 🧪 Check the brake-fluid reservoir and adjust it to the maximum line only if needed, using fresh DOT 3 brake fluid. Do not overfill it.
  • 🛑 Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should remain steady.
  • 🅿️ Apply and release the mechanical parking brake to verify normal operation.
  • 🚗 Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before normal driving.
  • 🌡️ Make several moderate stops from approximately 30 mph, allowing time between stops for cooling. Avoid panic stops and prolonged brake-pedal pressure for the first 200 miles unless required for safety.
  • 🔍 Recheck for leaks, unusual noise, pulling, excessive heat, or warning lights after the test drive.
  • 🔩 Recheck wheel-lug torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs) after approximately 50 miles.
