- ⚠️ Release the electronic parking brake before lifting your Equinox. Do not operate its switch while either rear caliper is removed.
- ⚠️ Chock both front wheels because the parking brake must remain released.
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
- ⚠️ Do not inhale brake dust or clean it with compressed air. Use brake cleaner.
- ⚠️ Never allow a caliper to hang from its flexible brake hose.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not normally required. Keep the ignition off and the key away from the vehicle during the repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Equinox on firm, level ground. Shift the transmission into Park and switch the ignition off.
- Release the electronic parking brake completely. Confirm the red parking-brake indicator is off before switching off the ignition.
- Place wheel chocks firmly against the front and rear of both front tires.
- Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is at the MAX line, remove a small amount before compressing the pistons so it cannot overflow.
- No infotainment service mode or scan-tool parking-brake retraction command is normally required for this cable-operated system.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the rear wheel nuts
- Put on the safety glasses and mechanic’s gloves.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the wheel nuts while the tires are still supporting the vehicle.
Step 2: Raise and support the rear
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at an approved rear lifting point shown in the owner’s manual.
- Position the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced rear support points, then lower the vehicle gently onto them.
- Leave the floor jack lightly touching its lifting point as a backup, without carrying the vehicle’s weight.
- Push the body gently to confirm it is stable before removing a wheel.
Step 3: Remove one rear wheel
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove the wheel and slide it beneath the side of the vehicle as an additional safety measure.
- Complete one side before opening the other side. This leaves an assembled brake available for reference.
Step 4: Inspect the brake assembly
- Use the non-chlorinated brake cleaner and small nylon brake brush to remove loose dust around the caliper and pad edges.
- Inspect the rotor for deep grooves, blue heat spots, heavy rust, or cracking. A damaged or undersized rotor must be resurfaced or replaced before fitting new pads.
- Inspect the brake hose for cracks, wetness, twisting, or swelling.
Step 5: Remove the caliper
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower and upper caliper guide-pin bolts.
- If a guide pin rotates, hold its flat section with the 17mm open-end wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
- Lift the caliper away from the bracket. Use the brake caliper hanger to support it from the suspension.
- Do not pull, twist, or place weight on the brake hose or parking-brake cable.
Step 6: Remove the old pads and hardware
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to lift the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the stainless pad-support clips from the bracket.
- Note the position of any wear-indicator tab before discarding the old pads.
- Photograph the old pad positions before removal.
Step 7: Check and lubricate the guide pins
- Pull each guide pin from its rubber boot by hand. A guide pin allows the caliper to slide and apply both pads evenly.
- Use brake cleaner and the small nylon brake brush to remove old lubricant and contamination.
- Inspect each rubber boot for tears and each pin for rust or pitting. Replace damaged hardware before continuing.
- Apply a thin coat of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the smooth guide-pin surfaces.
- Reinsert each pin by hand and confirm it moves smoothly without binding.
Step 8: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old brake pad against the piston face.
- Use the brake caliper piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper bore.
- This piston normally presses straight inward; do not force it to rotate.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Stop if fluid approaches the top.
- If the piston binds or requires excessive force, stop and inspect the caliper and parking-brake operation.
Step 9: Install the new hardware and pads
- Use brake cleaner and the small nylon brake brush to clean the caliper-bracket lands where the stainless clips sit.
- Press the new pad-support clips into the bracket by hand until fully seated.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad ears where they contact the clips.
- Do not put lubricant on the rotor or pad friction material.
- Install the new inner and outer pads by hand. Confirm they slide freely in the clips without excessive looseness.
Step 10: Reinstall the caliper
- Remove the brake caliper hanger and position the caliper over the new pads by hand.
- Make sure the brake hose and parking-brake cable are not twisted or trapped.
- Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Hold a rotating guide pin with the 17mm open-end wrench, then tighten each bolt using the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch torque wrench.
- Torque the rear caliper guide-pin bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Repeat on the opposite side
- Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 3 through 10 on the other rear brake.
- Replace all four rear pads even if one side appears less worn.
- If one side is substantially more worn, inspect the guide pins and caliper for binding.
Step 12: Reinstall the wheels
- Install each rear wheel and start all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to snug the nuts in a crossing pattern.
- Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle fully.
- Use the 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crossing pattern.
- Torque the wheel nuts to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Restore brake-pedal pressure
- With the ignition off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Do not move your Equinox until the pedal feels firm and consistent.
- Check the brake-fluid reservoir and correct the level only with the fluid specification printed on its cap.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine while holding the brake pedal. Confirm the pedal remains firm and no brake warning stays illuminated.
- Apply and release the electronic parking brake once. Listen for normal operation and confirm the warning indicator turns off.
- Check around both rear calipers and brake hoses for fluid leakage.
- Perform a slow test in a safe area. Confirm the vehicle stops straight and there are no scraping or grinding sounds.
- Bed in the pads with 6-8 moderate stops from approximately 50 km/h to 15 km/h. Avoid coming to a complete stop with hot brakes between passes.
- Drive for several minutes afterward without heavy braking to let the brakes cool.
- Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
