🔧 Silverado 1500 - Rear Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement

This is a solid intermediate DIY job. Replace the rear pads and rotors on both sides so braking stays balanced. I’d use the matched PowerStop Z36 rear truck and tow kit shown in the parts list. Brakes aren’t the place for a mystery-box experiment.

Assumption: These instructions use the new-body electronic parking brake system. A manual-parking-brake variation is included where needed.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your Silverado with correctly rated jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Chock both front wheels before lifting the rear.
  • ⚠️ Put the electronic parking brake into service mode before compressing its caliper pistons.
  • ⚠️ Never let a caliper hang from its rubber brake hose.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can irritate your lungs. Do not blow it off with compressed air.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease and brake fluid off the pad and rotor friction surfaces.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while either rear caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not normally required.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park on solid, level ground and place the transmission in Park.
  • 📋 Chock both sides of the front wheels.
  • 📋 Check the brake-fluid reservoir. Remove excess fluid if it is already at the maximum line.
  • 📋 Release the parking brake before lifting the truck.
  • 📋 If your Silverado has a foot-operated parking-brake pedal, skip the electronic service-mode sequence.

Electronic parking brake service mode:

  • Switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Release the electronic parking brake.
  • Press and hold the accelerator pedal fully down.
  • Hold the parking-brake switch in the release position.
  • While holding both controls, switch the ignition off and then back on within five seconds.
  • Release both controls when the parking-brake warning indicator flashes and the rear motors finish moving.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the rear wheel nuts

  • Use the 22mm deep socket and breaker bar to loosen each rear lug nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts while the tires are supporting the truck.

Step 2: Lift and support the rear

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack under the rear axle housing near the center section.
  • Place the 3-ton jack stands beneath the rear axle tubes on both sides.
  • Lower the axle onto the stands and gently shake the truck to confirm it is stable.

Step 3: Remove both rear wheels

  • Use the 22mm deep socket to remove the lug nuts and wheels.
  • Slide one wheel beneath the frame as an additional safety measure.

Step 4: Remove the rear caliper

  • Disconnect the pad wear-sensor connector carefully if equipped.
  • Use the 13mm socket to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin turns, hold it with the 7mm hex-bit socket while loosening the bolt.
  • Lift the caliper away with the small pry bar.
  • Support it with the brake caliper hanger. Do not stretch the hose or parking-brake wiring.

Step 5: Remove the old pads and bracket

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the bracket by hand.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless abutment clips.
  • Abutment clips are the small metal tracks that let the pads slide in the bracket.
  • Use the 18mm socket and breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Lift the bracket off the rotor.

Step 6: Remove the old rotor

  • Use the Torx T30 bit socket to remove the rotor retaining screw if fitted.
  • Confirm the parking brake is completely released.
  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If stuck, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the dead-blow hammer.
  • Do not hit the wheel studs or the braking surface you plan to reuse.
  • On a manual-parking-brake rotor, back off the internal parking-brake shoe adjuster if the rotor catches on the shoes.

Step 7: Clean the hub and bracket

  • Use the wire brush to remove rust and scale from the hub face.
  • Clean the caliper bracket beneath the abutment clips with the wire brush.
  • Spray the areas with brake cleaner and wipe them with disposable shop towels.
  • The new rotor must sit completely flat against the hub.

Step 8: Prepare and install the new rotor

  • Clean both rotor friction surfaces with brake cleaner and shop towels unless the rotor instructions say its coating is installation-ready.
  • Install the rotor over the wheel studs.
  • Install the retaining screw with the Torx T30 bit socket.
  • Torque the rotor retaining screw to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Install one lug nut by hand to hold the rotor firmly against the hub.

Step 9: Service the bracket and slide pins

  • Remove each guide pin from the bracket by hand.
  • Wipe the pins clean with shop towels and inspect the rubber boots for tears.
  • Apply a thin coating of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant to the smooth guide-pin surfaces.
  • Install the new abutment clips into the clean bracket.
  • Apply only a thin film of lubricant where the pad ears contact the clips.
  • Grease belongs on movement points, not friction surfaces.

Step 10: Reinstall the caliper bracket

  • Position the bracket over the new rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Tighten them with the 18mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque the rear caliper-bracket bolts to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Compress the caliper piston

  • Confirm the electronic parking brake is still in service mode.
  • Place an old pad against the piston.
  • Use the brake caliper piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Do not force, twist or hammer an electronic parking-brake piston.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and stop if the fluid approaches the top.

Step 12: Install the new pads

  • Place the inner and outer pads into the bracket with the friction material facing the rotor.
  • Confirm both pads slide freely in their abutment clips.
  • Position any wear indicator or sensor exactly like the original pad.

Step 13: Reinstall the caliper

  • Swing the caliper over the new pads without twisting the brake hose.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand.
  • Use the 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts.
  • Torque the rear caliper guide-pin bolts to 38 Nm (28 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the pad wear-sensor connector and secure its wire in the original clips.

Step 14: Repeat on the opposite side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 13 on the other rear wheel.
  • Compare the old pads. Strongly uneven wear can indicate a seized slide pin or sticking caliper.

Step 15: Reinstall the wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install both wheels and start every lug nut by hand.
  • Snug the lug nuts in a star pattern with the 22mm deep socket.
  • Raise the axle slightly with the 3-ton floor jack, remove the stands and lower the truck.
  • Torque the wheel lug nuts to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal repeatedly until it becomes firm.
  • ✅ Check the brake-fluid level and install the reservoir cap securely.
  • ✅ Exit electronic parking-brake service mode by applying and releasing the parking brake with the ignition on.
  • ✅ Confirm the parking-brake warning light goes out and both rear motors operate normally.
  • ✅ Check around both calipers for leaks, trapped wires or twisted hoses.
  • ✅ Perform a slow test drive in a safe area before entering normal traffic.
  • ✅ Bed in the new pads using the exact procedure supplied with the brake kit.
  • ✅ Avoid towing, panic stops and holding the brake pedal after a hard stop during the initial bedding period.
  • ✅ Recheck wheel-lug torque after approximately 50 miles.
