  • ⚠️ Work on level, solid ground and chock both front wheels.
  • ⚠️ Support your CX-5 with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Release the parking brake before entering maintenance mode.
  • ⚠️ Never compress or rotate the rear pistons before maintenance mode is active. That can damage the electric parking-brake mechanism.
  • ⚠️ Keep grease, brake cleaner residue, and dirty hands off pad and rotor friction surfaces.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Do not disconnect the brake hoses. This procedure should not require bleeding.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Park on level ground, select Park, switch off AUTOHOLD, and chock both front wheels.
  • 📋 Check the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is above the maximum line, remove a small amount before compressing the pistons.
  • 📋 Do not set the parking brake after lifting the vehicle.
  • 📋 Photograph the pad clips and wear-indicator positions before removing them.
  • 📋 Maintenance mode retracts the electronic parking-brake actuators so the pistons can be pushed straight inward.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Enter Electronic Parking Brake Maintenance Mode

  • Keep your foot off the brake pedal and switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Use the parking-brake switch to release the electronic parking brake completely.
  • Switch the ignition off.
  • Press and hold the accelerator pedal fully down while pushing and holding the parking-brake switch downward.
  • While holding both controls, switch the ignition on within five seconds without starting the engine.
  • Listen for the rear parking-brake motors and verify that the amber parking-brake warning indicator illuminates.

Step 2: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts while your CX-5 is still on the ground.

Step 3: Raise and Support the Rear

  • Position the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum under the designated rear lifting point.
  • Raise the rear and position the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum beneath the designated side support points.
  • Lower your CX-5 gently onto both stands and confirm that it is stable.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove both rear wheels.

Step 4: Remove the Rear Caliper

  • Place the drain pan beneath the brake assembly to catch dirt and cleaner.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin spins, hold its flats with the 19mm open-end wrench.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket and support it with the brake caliper hanger hook.
  • Do not let the caliper hang from its rubber brake hose or electrical parking-brake wiring.

Step 5: Remove the Old Pads and Bracket

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the bracket by hand.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver carefully if corrosion has trapped the pads.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to remove both caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Remove the bracket and old stainless pad clips.
  • Compare every old pad with its replacement.

Step 6: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight from the hub.
  • If it is stuck, use the dead-blow hammer to strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs.
  • Rotate the rotor while tapping it. Do not hit the wheel studs or backing plate.
  • Use the small wire brush to remove rust from the hub face.
  • Wipe the hub clean with brake parts cleaner and a clean shop towel.

Step 7: Prepare and Install the New Rotor

  • Clean both friction surfaces of the new rotor thoroughly with brake parts cleaner and clean shop towels.
  • Install the rotor squarely against the clean hub.
  • Temporarily thread one wheel nut backward by hand to hold the rotor flat during assembly.
  • Do not put grease or anti-seize on the rotor face or wheel studs.

Step 8: Service the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old pad clips if they remain installed.
  • Use the small wire brush to clean the bracket surfaces beneath the clips.
  • Install the new stainless hardware clips completely into the bracket.
  • Remove each guide pin by hand, wipe it clean, and inspect its rubber boot.
  • Apply a thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake grease to each smooth guide pin.
  • Reinstall each pin into its original position and ensure the rubber boot seals around it.

Step 9: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both bolts by hand.
  • Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the bracket bolts.

Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake grease where the pad tabs contact the stainless clips.
  • Keep grease away from the pad material and rotor.
  • Install the inner and outer pads in the same orientation as the originals.
  • Verify that both pads can slide in the clips without binding.

Step 11: Compress the Rear Caliper Piston

  • Confirm again that maintenance mode is active before moving the piston.
  • Position an old pad over the piston and use the rear disc-brake piston compression tool to push the piston straight inward slowly.
  • Do not screw or rotate the piston. Maintenance mode allows it to compress straight inward.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir and stop if fluid approaches the top.
  • Inspect the piston dust boot and make sure it is not twisted, pinched, or torn.

Step 12: Reinstall the Rear Caliper

  • Place the caliper over the new pads without forcing it.
  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Hold a spinning guide pin with the 19mm open-end wrench.
  • Use the 14mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the guide-pin bolts.

Step 13: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 12 on the other rear wheel using the same tools.
  • Replace pads and rotors on both sides even if only one side appears worn.
  • If one side is dramatically thinner, inspect for a seized guide pin or sticking caliper before driving.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Remove the temporary wheel nut and install each wheel.
  • Start all wheel nuts by hand.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts in a star pattern.
  • Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift your CX-5 slightly, remove both stands, and lower it to the ground.
  • Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Exit Electronic Parking Brake Maintenance Mode

  • Keep your foot off the brake pedal and switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
  • Switch the ignition off again.
  • Press and hold the accelerator pedal fully down while pulling and holding the parking-brake switch upward.
  • While holding both controls, switch the ignition on within five seconds without starting the engine.
  • Listen for the rear motors and verify that the amber parking-brake warning indicator turns off.
  • Release the controls and switch the ignition off.

  • ✅ Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • ✅ Start the engine and confirm the brake pedal remains firm.
