🔧 Rear Brakes and Rotors - Replacement
Your rear brake pads and rotors wear together, so replacing both at the same time gives you a fresh braking surface and better pedal feel. On your Rogue, the rear brake job is a straightforward driveway repair if you work one side at a time and keep everything clean.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Work on a flat, solid surface only.
- Chock the front wheels before lifting the rear.
- Support the Rogue with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
- Do not press the brake pedal with a caliper removed.
- Rear calipers use a threaded parking-brake style piston on many Nissan rear disc setups; compress it by turning, not forcing it straight in.
- Let brakes cool before starting if the vehicle was just driven.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Keep the transmission in Park.
- Loosen the rear lug nuts slightly before lifting.
- If the parking brake is a foot-pedal style, fully release it before removing the rear wheels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen and lift the rear
- Use the 19mm lug wrench or socket to loosen both rear wheel lug nuts slightly.
- Use the floor jack to raise the rear of the Rogue at the proper lift point.
- Place jack stands under the rear support points and lower the vehicle onto them.
- Remove both rear wheels.
Step 2: Remove the caliper
- Use the 14mm socket to remove the caliper slide pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the bracket and support it with a brake caliper hanger or bungee cord.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the hose.
Step 3: Remove the caliper bracket
- Use the 17mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the bracket from the knuckle.
- Torque on installation: 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)
Step 4: Remove the rotor
- Slide the rotor off the hub.
- If it is stuck, use a flat blade screwdriver through the access hole and tap the rotor hat with a soft mallet if needed.
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the hub face.
- A clean hub helps prevent brake pulsation.
Step 5: Install the new rotor
- Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner and wipe it dry.
- Install the new rotor onto the hub.
- If the rotor has retaining screws, reinstall them if equipped.
Step 6: Replace the pads and hardware
- Remove the old pad clips from the bracket.
- Install the new brake hardware kit.
- Apply a thin layer of brake grease to the pad contact points and slide areas.
- Install the new pads into the bracket.
Step 7: Compress the rear caliper piston
- Use the C-clamp or rear brake piston tool to slowly retract the caliper piston.
- If the piston resists, turn it while pushing inward instead of forcing it straight in.
- Go slow to avoid damaging the seal.
Step 8: Reinstall the caliper and bracket
- Reinstall the caliper bracket and start the bolts by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket to tighten the bracket bolts.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)
- Set the caliper over the new pads and install the slide pin bolts using the 14mm socket.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)
Step 9: Reinstall the wheels
- Put the rear wheels back on and hand-start the lug nuts.
- Lower the Rogue with the floor jack.
- Use the torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs)
Step 10: Seat the pads
- Press the brake pedal slowly several times until it feels firm.
- Check brake fluid level in the reservoir and top off if needed.
- Test the brake pedal before moving the vehicle.
✅ After Repair
- Test drive at low speed first.
- Listen for rubbing or clicking.
- Make a few gentle stops to bed in the new pads.
- Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
- If the brake pedal feels spongy or sinks, stop and inspect the install.
