This repair replaces the rear brake pads and rear rotors on your Edge. The rear brakes use an electronic parking brake, so the parking brake system must be placed into service mode before removing the calipers.

- ⚠️ Your Edge has an electronic parking brake. Do not remove the rear calipers until the parking brake is in maintenance mode.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Edge on flat, solid ground.
- Place the transmission in Park and chock the front wheels.
- Do not set the parking brake before starting. The rear electronic parking brake must be released.
- A brake caliper compression tool pushes the caliper piston back into its bore so the new thicker pads fit.
- A torque wrench tightens bolts to a measured amount so they are not too loose or over-tightened.
- Enter electronic parking brake maintenance mode before lifting the rear wheels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Enter Parking Brake Maintenance Mode
- Make sure the ignition is off and the parking brake is released.
- Press the ignition button to turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Use your foot to press and hold the accelerator pedal fully down.
- Use your finger to press and hold the electronic parking brake switch DOWN in the release position.
- While holding both, turn the ignition OFF, then turn it back ON within 5 seconds.
- Keep holding the accelerator pedal and parking brake switch until the instrument cluster shows maintenance mode or the parking brake warning flashes.
- Release the pedal and switch, then turn the ignition OFF.
- Listen for the rear motors retracting.
Step 2: Loosen the Rear Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel lug nut about one turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
Step 3: Lift and Support the Rear of the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the approved rear lifting point.
- Raise the rear of your Edge high enough for both rear wheels to clear the ground.
- Place 3-ton jack stands under the approved rear support points.
- Slowly lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the vehicle by hand to confirm it is stable.
Step 4: Remove the Rear Wheels
- Use a 21mm socket to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both rear wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 5: Remove the Rear Caliper
- Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the outer brake pad away from the rotor slightly.
- Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the two rear caliper slide pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper off the brake pads and rotor.
- Use a caliper hanger hook to hang the caliper from the suspension.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 6: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Use your hands or a flathead screwdriver to remove the inner and outer brake pads from the caliper bracket.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the stainless pad clips from the caliper bracket.
- Compare the old pads to the new rear brake pad set before installing.
Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use a 15mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two rear caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket from the knuckle.
- These bolts can be tight. Keep the socket square on the bolt head.
Step 8: Remove the Rear Rotor
- Check the face of the rotor for a small retaining screw.
- If equipped, use a 6mm Allen socket to remove the rotor retaining screw.
- Use a rubber mallet to tap around the rotor hat until the rotor loosens.
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- Rust can make rotors stick.
Step 9: Clean the Hub and Bracket
- Use a wire brush to clean rust from the wheel hub face.
- Use a brake parts cleaning brush and brake cleaner spray nozzle to clean the caliper bracket where the pad clips sit.
- Wipe the area clean with a lint-free rag.
- Do not spray brake cleaner directly into the electronic parking brake motor.
Step 10: Install the New Rotor
- Use brake cleaner spray nozzle to clean both sides of the new rotor.
- Slide the new rear rotor onto the hub.
- If equipped, use a 6mm Allen socket to install the rotor retaining screw snugly.
- Do not over-tighten the retaining screw.
Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Apply blue medium-strength threadlocker to the caliper bracket bolt threads.
- Use a 15mm socket to install the caliper bracket bolts by hand first.
- Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 15mm socket to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs)
Step 12: Install New Brake Hardware and Pads
- Press the new rear brake hardware clips into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Apply a thin layer of high-temperature brake lubricant to the pad clip contact points only.
- Do not put lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor surface.
- Install the new inner and outer brake pads into the bracket.
- The pads should slide easily. If they bind, remove them and clean the bracket again with the wire brush.
Step 13: Compress the Rear Caliper Piston
- Use a brake caliper compression tool to slowly push the piston straight back into the caliper.
- If needed, use a 6-inch C-clamp carefully and compress slowly.
- Do not twist the piston on this electronic parking brake caliper while it is in maintenance mode.
- Watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood. If fluid rises too high, stop and remove excess with a proper fluid extractor.
Step 14: Reinstall the Rear Caliper
- Place the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
- Use a 13mm socket to install the caliper slide pin bolts by hand first.
- Use a 3/8-inch drive torque wrench and 13mm socket to tighten the caliper slide pin bolts.
- Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft-lbs)
Step 15: Repeat on the Other Rear Side
- Use the same tools and steps on the opposite rear brake.
- Always replace rear brake pads and rotors in pairs.
Step 16: Reinstall the Rear Wheels
- Install both rear wheels by hand.
- Use a 21mm socket to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Use the floor jack to raise the vehicle slightly, then remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Edge until the tires touch the ground enough to keep them from spinning.
- Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and 21mm socket to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 220 Nm (162 ft-lbs)
Step 17: Exit Parking Brake Maintenance Mode
- Press the ignition button to turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Use your foot to press and hold the accelerator pedal fully down.
- Use your finger to pull and hold the electronic parking brake switch UP in the apply position.
- While holding both, turn the ignition OFF, then turn it back ON within 5 seconds.
- Keep holding until the parking brake motors apply and the maintenance mode message clears.
- Release the pedal and switch.
Step 18: Seat the Brake Pads
- Use your foot to press the brake pedal slowly 5-10 times until it feels firm.
- Do not drive until the brake pedal feels firm.
- Use the electronic parking brake switch to apply and release the parking brake once.
