🔧 Highlander - Rear Brake Pad & Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the rear brake pads and rear brake rotors on your Highlander. The pads are the friction material that squeeze the rotors, and the rotors are the metal discs the pads clamp onto to stop the vehicle.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work on a cool brake system. Hot rotors and pads can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Use jack stands. Never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Your Highlander uses a mechanical parking brake inside the rear rotor hat. Make sure the parking brake is fully released before removing the rear rotors.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust can be harmful. Do not blow it with compressed air; use brake cleaner.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this rear brake service.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Highlander on a flat, solid surface.
  • Place the transmission in Park.
  • Release the parking brake completely.
  • Place wheel chocks in front of the front tires. Wheel chocks are wedges that stop the vehicle from rolling.
  • Loosen the rear lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Open the brake fluid reservoir cap under the hood and set it loosely on top. This helps fluid move when compressing the caliper piston.
  • If the brake fluid reservoir is very full, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool to prevent overflow.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each rear lug nut about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Tip: Break them loose before lifting.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Rear of the Vehicle

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the rear of your Highlander at the rear center lift point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved rear side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly touching as a backup, but do not use it as the main support.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Wheels

  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and place them flat under the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Remove the Rear Brake Caliper

  • Look at the back side of the rear brake caliper. The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that holds the pads.
  • Use the 14mm socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to remove the two caliper slide pin bolts.
  • If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm wrench while removing the bolt with the 14mm socket.
  • Lift the caliper off the bracket.
  • Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
  • Rest it carefully on the suspension or support it with a safe hook if available.

Step 5: Remove the Old Rear Brake Pads

  • Use the flathead screwdriver medium to gently pry the old brake pads out of the caliper bracket.
  • Notice the position of any wear indicator tabs before removing the pads.
  • Remove the old stainless pad hardware clips from the bracket by hand or with the flathead screwdriver medium.

Step 6: Remove the Rear Caliper Bracket

  • Use the 17mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to remove the two rear caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the caliper bracket from the knuckle.
  • Set the bolts aside where they will stay clean.

Step 7: Remove the Rear Rotor

  • Make sure the parking brake is still fully released.
  • Pull the rotor straight off by hand.
  • If the rotor is stuck, thread two M8 x 1.25 bolts evenly into the small threaded holes on the rotor face.
  • Use the ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten each M8 x 1.25 bolt a little at a time until the rotor pops loose.
  • If needed, tap around the rotor hat with the dead blow hammer 2-lb.
  • Do not strike the wheel studs.

Step 8: Clean the Hub Surface

  • Use the wire brush to clean rust and scale from the wheel hub face.
  • Use brake cleaner spray and shop towels to wipe the hub clean.
  • The new rotor must sit flat against the hub.
  • Tip: A clean hub prevents brake vibration.

Step 9: Install the New Rear Rotor

  • Clean both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray and wipe dry with shop towels.
  • Slide the new rear rotor onto the hub.
  • Install one lug nut by hand backward to hold the rotor in place while you work.

Step 10: Prepare the Caliper Bracket

  • Use the wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
  • Install the new hardware clips from the rear brake pad hardware kit by hand.
  • Apply a thin layer of brake lubricant only where the brake pad ears touch the hardware clips.
  • Do not put lubricant on the pad friction surface or rotor face.

Step 11: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
  • Start both bracket bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Torque to 88 Nm (65 ft-lbs)

Step 12: Compress the Rear Caliper Piston

  • Use the rear brake caliper piston compression tool (specialty) or C-clamp 6-inch with an old brake pad to slowly push the piston back into the caliper.
  • The piston is the round part inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
  • Go slowly and watch the brake fluid reservoir under the hood so it does not overflow.
  • If fluid rises too high, remove a small amount safely with a clean suction tool.

Step 13: Install the New Rear Brake Pads

  • Slide the new rear brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Make sure the pad ears sit fully in the new hardware clips.
  • The pads should move slightly by hand without being loose.
  • Apply a very thin layer of brake lubricant to the pad backing plate contact points only.

Step 14: Reinstall the Rear Brake Caliper

  • Place the caliper over the new pads and rotor.
  • Start both slide pin bolts by hand.
  • Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the slide pin bolts.
  • If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm wrench.
  • Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs)

Step 15: Repeat on the Other Rear Side

  • Repeat Steps 4 through 14 on the other rear wheel.
  • Replace rear pads and rotors in pairs so braking stays even.

Step 16: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nut holding each rotor.
  • Install the wheels by hand.
  • Start all lug nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench 3/8-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 17: Lower the Vehicle and Torque Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle until the tires touch the ground.
  • Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs)

Step 18: Pump the Brake Pedal

  • Before driving, sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal several times.
  • The pedal may go low at first, then become firm.
  • This seats the caliper pistons against the new pads.
  • Do not skip this step.

✅ After Repair

  • Check the brake fluid level and adjust to the MAX line if needed.
  • Reinstall the brake fluid reservoir cap securely.
  • Start your Highlander and press the brake pedal again. It should feel firm.
  • Test the brakes at very low speed before entering traffic.
  • Perform a gentle break-in: make 8-10 moderate stops from about 30-40 mph, allowing the brakes to cool briefly between stops.
  • Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles unless it is an emergency.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after the first short drive.
