This repair replaces the rear brake pads and both rear rotors on your Highlander. The parking brake uses small drum-style shoes inside each rear rotor, so the parking brake must remain fully released while removing the rotors.

- 🚙 Park on level pavement, place the transmission in Park, switch off the engine, and chock both front wheels.

- 🔍 Open the hood and inspect the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is at the MAX line, remove a small amount before compressing the pistons to prevent overflow.
- 📱 No infotainment service mode, scan-tool command, battery registration, or electronic parking-brake retraction is required.
- 🔁 Replace the pads and rotors on both rear wheels, even if only one side looks worn.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the rear wheel nuts
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-half turn.
- Do not remove the nuts while the Highlander is still on the ground.
Step 2: Raise and support the rear
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the specified rear lifting point and raise the Highlander.
- Place the 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced rear support points, then lower the Highlander securely onto them.
- Gently push the body to verify that it is stable before working underneath or beside it.
Step 3: Remove both rear wheels
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both rear wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
Step 4: Remove the first rear caliper
- Place the 2-quart drain pan below the brake assembly to catch brake-cleaner runoff.
- Use the 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper slide-pin bolts.
- Lift the caliper from the bracket and support it with the caliper hanger hook. A caliper hanger is a sturdy hook that supports the caliper without stressing its hose.
- Remove the old inner and outer pads by hand.
- Photograph the hardware before removing it.
Step 5: Compress the caliper piston
- Place one old brake pad against the piston, then use the rear brake piston compression tool to press the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
- This piston presses straight inward; it does not need to be rotated.
- Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Stop if the fluid approaches the rim.
- Check the rubber piston boot and brake hose for splits, wetness, or twisting. Replace damaged components before continuing.
Step 6: Remove the caliper bracket
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
- Remove the bracket from the steering knuckle.
- Pull out the stainless pad-support clips by hand and discard them if replacements are included.
Step 7: Remove the old rotor
- Confirm again that the parking brake is fully released.
- Pull the rotor straight outward by hand.
- If rust holds it in place, strike only the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the 16-ounce rubber mallet.
- If necessary, thread the two M8 x 1.25mm bolts evenly into the rotor’s extraction holes using the 3/8-inch ratchet. Alternate between the bolts until the rotor releases.
- If the rotor moves outward but catches on the parking-brake shoes, remove the rubber access plug. Use the flat-blade screwdriver and brake adjusting spoon through the access hole to retract the star-wheel adjuster a few clicks.
- Do not force the rotor over the parking-brake shoes.
Step 8: Inspect the parking brake
- Use the non-chlorinated brake cleaner over the drain pan to remove loose dust without blowing it into the air.
- Inspect the parking-brake shoe linings, springs, and adjuster inside the rotor area.
- Stop and replace the parking-brake components if a lining is cracked, detached, soaked with fluid, or worn to approximately 1mm.
- Check the axle area for grease or oil leakage before installing the new rotor.
Step 9: Prepare and install the new rotor
- Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and nitrile mechanic gloves to clean the protective coating from both friction faces of the new rotor.
- Use the small wire brush to clean rust from the hub face. Keep the hub surface smooth and free of debris.
- Slide the new rotor over the wheel studs and parking-brake shoes.
- If the parking brake was retracted, use the brake adjusting spoon to expand the shoes until light drag is felt while turning the rotor. Back off the adjuster slightly so the rotor turns without binding.
- Reinstall the rubber access plug by hand.
Step 10: Service and install the bracket
- Use the small wire brush to clean the pad-contact surfaces on the caliper bracket.
- Install the new stainless pad-support clips by hand.
- Apply a very thin film of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant where the pad ears touch the clips. Keep lubricant off the rotor and pad friction material.
- Check that both slide pins move freely. Apply a thin film of silicone brake lubricant beneath their rubber boots if needed.
- Position the bracket and start both bolts by hand.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten both bracket bolts to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Install the new pads and caliper
- Install the inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand, matching the supplied wear indicator and shims to the original arrangement.
- Lower the caliper over the new pads without twisting its hose.
- Start both slide-pin bolts by hand. If a slide pin turns, hold its flats while tightening with the 14mm socket.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten both slide-pin bolts to Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Repeat on the opposite side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 11 on the other rear wheel using the same listed tools and torque specifications.
- Before moving on, verify that both calipers are secured and every rubber brake hose follows its natural path.
Step 13: Reinstall the wheels
- Install both wheels and start every wheel nut by hand.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise the Highlander slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Restore brake-pedal pressure
- With the engine off, press and release the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
- Do not move the Highlander until the pedal feels firm and consistent.
- Inspect the brake-fluid reservoir and ensure the level is between MIN and MAX.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should not continue sinking.
- 🦶 Apply and release the parking brake several times, then confirm both rear wheels release fully.
- 🚗 Test the brakes at walking speed in a safe, traffic-free area before driving normally.
- 🔥 Bed in the new pads with approximately 8 moderate stops from 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Do not stop completely between applications.
- 🌬️ Drive for 5-10 minutes afterward with minimal braking so the brakes can cool.
- ⏳ Avoid hard braking and prolonged pedal pressure while stopped for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
