🔧 Equinox - Rear Brake Pads and Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces the rear brake pads and both rear rotors on your Equinox. The electronic parking brake must be fully released before removing the calipers, and the rear caliper pistons must be rotated while being pushed inward.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours

Assumption: Factory-size brakes and original electronic parking-brake system.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Replace rear pads and rotors on both sides to maintain even braking.
  • ⚠️ Never work under an Equinox supported only by a floor jack.
  • ⚠️ Release the electronic parking brake before lifting the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Do not operate the parking-brake switch while a caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Brake dust may be harmful. Do not use compressed air to clean it.
  • ⚠️ Support each caliper with a hanger. Never let it hang from its hose.
  • ⚠️ Do not press the brake pedal while either rear caliper is removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not normally required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Equinox on firm, level ground. Place the transmission in Park and keep the engine off.
  • Place wheel chocks securely in front of and behind both front wheels.
  • Release the electronic parking brake completely. Confirm the red parking-brake indicator goes out.
  • Connect an electronic parking-brake-capable scan tool and select Chevrolet > Equinox > Chassis > Electronic Parking Brake > Service Mode. Follow the tool prompts to release cable tension.
  • If that menu is unavailable, keep the parking brake released and do not pull or disturb its cables. The caliper pistons still require a wind-back tool.
  • A wind-back tool pushes and turns the piston simultaneously so its internal parking-brake mechanism is not damaged.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear wheel nut about one-quarter turn.
  • Do not remove the wheel nuts while the tires are supporting the vehicle.

Step 2: Lift and Support the Rear

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack at the rear-center lifting point on the rear suspension crossmember.
  • Position 3-ton jack stands under the reinforced rear-side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands, then give it a careful stability check.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly contacting the lifting point as secondary support.

Step 3: Remove Both Rear Wheels

  • Use the 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
  • Remove both rear wheels and slide them beneath the side of the vehicle as additional protection.

Step 4: Remove the First Rear Caliper

  • Place the plastic drain pan beneath the brake assembly.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the upper and lower caliper guide-pin bolts.
  • If a guide pin turns, hold its flat section with a suitable wrench from the wind-back tool kit while loosening the bolt with the 13mm socket.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket and support it with the caliper hanger.
  • Remove the old inner and outer pads by hand. Use the small flat-blade screwdriver only if they are stuck.

Step 5: Retract the Caliper Piston

  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir. If it is completely full, remove a small amount with the clean fluid-removal syringe supplied in the wind-back kit.
  • Fit the correct adapter from the rear brake caliper piston wind-back tool kit into the piston slots.
  • Rotate the piston clockwise while applying steady inward pressure until it is fully seated.
  • Align the piston slots so the locating feature on the inner pad can seat correctly.
  • Stop if the piston will not rotate smoothly. Excessive force can damage the parking-brake mechanism.
  • Retract slowly while watching the fluid level.

Step 6: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use an 18mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Lift the bracket away from the rotor.
  • Use a brass wire brush to clean the bracket areas beneath the stainless pad clips.
  • Remove each guide pin by hand, wipe it clean, and inspect its rubber boot.
  • Apply a thin coating of silicone-based brake lubricant to each guide pin, then reinstall it in its original position.

Step 7: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Use a Torx T30 bit socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the rotor retaining screw, if equipped.
  • Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
  • If rust holds it in place, strike the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the 8-ounce dead-blow hammer.
  • Use the brass wire brush to clean rust from the hub face and center pilot.
  • Apply an extremely thin film of high-temperature anti-seize compound around the hub center pilot only. Keep it away from the wheel studs and braking surfaces.

Step 8: Install the New Rotor

  • Use brake cleaner over the plastic drain pan to remove the protective coating from both sides of the new rotor.
  • Wipe the rotor dry with a clean disposable towel.
  • Place the rotor fully against the hub.
  • Install the retaining screw with the Torx T30 bit socket. Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the bracket over the new rotor and start both bolts by hand.
  • Use the 18mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the bracket bolts. Torque to 148 Nm (109 ft-lbs).
  • Install the new stainless pad clips by hand. Confirm each clip is completely seated.
  • Apply a very thin layer of silicone-based brake lubricant where the pad ears contact the clips.
  • Do not put lubricant on the pad friction material or rotor.

Step 10: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Fit the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Confirm the pad with the piston-locating feature is correctly seated against the piston.
  • Slide the pads by hand. They should move without binding.
  • Lower the supported caliper over the pads without twisting the brake hose.

Step 11: Tighten the Caliper Bolts

  • Start both guide-pin bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use the 13mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten both bolts. Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
  • Remove the caliper hanger and check that the hose and parking-brake cable are routed normally.

Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 11 on the opposite rear brake.
  • Compare both completed assemblies before installing the wheels.

Step 13: Install the Rear Wheels

  • Install each wheel and start every wheel nut by hand.
  • Use the 19mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower the tires to the ground.
  • Use the 19mm socket and 1/2-inch torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern. Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Restore the Electronic Parking Brake

  • Use the electronic parking-brake-capable scan tool and select Chevrolet > Equinox > Chassis > Electronic Parking Brake > Exit Service Mode.
  • Follow the scan-tool prompts to apply and release the electronic parking brake.
  • Clear only parking-brake codes caused by service mode.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal repeatedly until it becomes firm. The first several strokes may travel close to the floor.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir and adjust it to the proper mark using fresh DOT 3 brake fluid.
  • Start the engine and hold firm pedal pressure for 30 seconds. The pedal should not continue sinking.
  • Apply and release the electronic parking brake several times. Confirm the warning indicator behaves normally.
  • Inspect both rear calipers and hoses for fluid leaks.
  • Perform a slow test in a safe area before entering normal traffic.
  • Bed in the pads with approximately 8 moderate stops from 50 km/h to 10 km/h. Allow cooling time between stops and do not hold the hot brakes applied while stationary.
  • Avoid hard braking for the first 300 km unless required for safety.
  • Recheck wheel-nut torque after approximately 80-160 km.
