🔧 Tundra - Rear Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement

This repair replaces both rear brake rotors and the rear brake pads. Your Tundra uses a disc brake for normal braking and small parking-brake shoes inside each rear rotor, so the parking brake must remain released while removing the rotors.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Tundra on level pavement, shift the transmission into Park, and switch off the ignition.
  • Release the parking brake completely. Place heavy-duty wheel chocks tightly against both sides of the front tires.
  • Open the hood and check the brake-fluid reservoir. Use a brake-fluid syringe to remove a small amount if the fluid is near the MAX line.
  • The brake-fluid level rises when the caliper pistons are compressed. Do not let the reservoir overflow.
  • No infotainment service mode or scan tool is required because your Tundra uses a mechanical parking brake.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Rear Wheel Nuts

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves before beginning.
  • Use a 22mm deep socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each rear lug nut about one-half turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts while the tires are still carrying the truck's weight.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Rear Axle

  • Use the 3-ton floor jack beneath the center of the rear axle differential housing to raise the rear wheels.
  • Position the 6-ton jack stands beneath the rear axle tubes, inboard of the leaf-spring mounts.
  • Lower the axle carefully onto both stands with the floor jack, then gently push the truck to confirm it is stable.
  • Leave the floor jack lightly touching the differential as secondary support.

Step 3: Remove Both Rear Wheels

  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lug nuts.
  • Lift off both rear wheels and place them flat away from the work area.
  • Complete one brake assembly at a time so the opposite side remains available as a reference.

Step 4: Remove the Rear Caliper

  • Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the two caliper slide-pin bolts.
  • If a slide pin rotates, hold it with the 17mm combination wrench while turning the bolt with the 17mm socket.
  • Lift the caliper from the bracket and support it with a brake caliper hanger.
  • Do not twist, stretch, or disconnect the brake hose.

Step 5: Remove the Old Brake Pads

  • Pull the inner and outer pads from the caliper bracket by hand.
  • Use the small flat-blade screwdriver to remove the old stainless-steel pad clips.
  • Note the location of the pad wear indicator and install the new pad in the same orientation.
  • Use the 12-inch drain pan beneath the assembly to catch brake-cleaner runoff.

Step 6: Compress the Caliper Piston

  • Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
  • Use the rear brake piston compression tool to push the piston slowly and evenly into the caliper.
  • Watch the brake-fluid reservoir while compressing the piston. Use the brake-fluid syringe if the level approaches the top.
  • Stop if the piston binds, tilts, or will not retract with moderate pressure. A seized caliper must be replaced.

Step 7: Remove the Caliper Bracket

  • Use a 19mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper-bracket bolts.
  • Lift the bracket away from the rotor.
  • Inspect both slide pins by moving them with your fingers. They should move smoothly without rust or torn rubber boots.

Step 8: Retract the Parking-Brake Shoes if Needed

  • Confirm once more that the parking brake is fully released.
  • If the rotor does not move freely, rotate it until the access opening aligns with the parking-brake adjuster.
  • Use the large flat-blade screwdriver through the access opening to turn the star-wheel adjuster inward. The star wheel is the small toothed wheel that changes parking-brake shoe clearance.
  • Turn it a few clicks at a time until the rotor clears the shoes.

Step 9: Remove the Old Rotor

  • Pull the rotor straight from the hub by hand.
  • If it is rusted to the hub, thread both M8 x 1.25 rotor removal bolts evenly into the rotor's extraction holes.
  • Alternate between the two M8 x 1.25 bolts using the appropriate hand-threaded fit and then a 3/8-inch ratchet until the rotor releases. Do not tighten one bolt fully before the other.
  • If necessary, strike only the rotor hat between the wheel studs with the 16-ounce rubber mallet.
  • Do not strike the wheel studs or the parking-brake components.

Step 10: Inspect the Parking Brake

  • Use the safety glasses and N95 dust mask while inspecting the parking-brake shoes, springs, and adjuster.
  • Check for cracked lining, oil contamination, loose lining, broken springs, or deep scoring inside the old rotor.
  • If any damage is present, replace and adjust the parking-brake components before continuing.
  • Do not operate the parking-brake pedal while the rotor is removed.

Step 11: Clean the Hub and New Rotor

  • Use the brass wire brush to remove rust from the wheel-hub face and the rotor's center pilot.
  • Keep the wheel studs and parking-brake linings clean and dry.
  • Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the 12-inch drain pan to clean both friction surfaces and the inner drum surface of the new rotor.
  • A clean hub helps prevent brake vibration.

Step 12: Install and Adjust the New Rotor

  • Slide the cleaned rotor over the wheel studs and parking-brake shoes by hand.
  • Temporarily install two lug nuts backward by hand to hold the rotor flush against the hub.
  • Use the large flat-blade screwdriver through the access opening to expand the parking-brake star wheel until the rotor locks.
  • Turn the adjuster in the opposite direction approximately eight clicks, then rotate the rotor by hand.
  • The rotor should turn with only a slight, even drag. Retract the adjuster farther if the rotor binds.

Step 13: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket

  • Position the bracket over the rotor and start both mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use the 19mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bracket bolts to 100 Nm (74 ft-lbs).

Step 14: Install the New Pad Hardware

  • Use non-chlorinated brake cleaner and the brass wire brush to clean the bracket areas beneath the stainless-steel clips.
  • Press the new hardware clips into the bracket by hand.
  • Apply a very thin film of high-temperature ceramic brake lubricant to the pad ears where they touch the clips.
  • Keep lubricant completely off the pad friction material and rotor surfaces.

Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads

  • Slide the new inner and outer pads into the bracket by hand.
  • Install the wear-indicator pad in the same position and direction as the original pad.
  • Make sure both pads move freely in the clips without excessive looseness.

Step 16: Reinstall the Caliper

  • Remove the caliper hanger and lower the caliper over the new pads by hand.
  • Make sure the rubber slide-pin boots are not twisted or pinched.
  • Start both slide-pin bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use the 17mm combination wrench to hold each slide pin if needed, then use the 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs).

Step 17: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Use the same listed tools and repeat Steps 4 through 16 on the other rear brake assembly.
  • Replace both rear rotors and all four rear pads as one complete axle set.

Step 18: Reinstall the Rear Wheels

  • Remove the temporary lug nuts with the 22mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet.
  • Install both wheels and start every lug nut by hand.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern.
  • Use the 3-ton floor jack to raise the axle slightly, remove the 6-ton jack stands, and lower the truck to the ground.
  • Use the 22mm deep socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to 131 Nm (97 ft-lbs).

Step 19: Restore Brake Pedal Pressure

  • With the engine off, press the brake pedal slowly several times until it becomes firm.
  • Do not move your Tundra until the pedal is firm and remains at a consistent height.
  • Check the brake-fluid reservoir and add DOT 3 brake fluid only if the level is below the proper mark.
  • Install the reservoir cap securely by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Apply and release the parking brake several times, then confirm both rear wheels rotate without heavy drag.
  • ✅ Start the engine and hold firm pressure on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. The pedal should not sink steadily.
  • ✅ Check around both calipers and brake hoses for fluid leaks.
  • ✅ Perform a slow test drive in a traffic-free area. Confirm normal pedal feel before increasing speed.
  • ✅ Follow the brake-pad manufacturer's bedding procedure. If none is provided, make 8-10 moderate stops from about 65 km/h to 15 km/h, allowing brief cooling between stops.
  • ✅ Avoid holding the brake pedal while completely stopped with very hot new brakes.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug-nut torque at 131 Nm (97 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
  • ✅ A brake-fluid bleed is not required unless the hydraulic system was opened or the pedal remains soft.
