This repair replaces a leaking, swollen, cracked, or soft radiator hose on your Civic. The radiator hoses carry hot coolant between the engine and radiator, so replacing a damaged hose helps prevent overheating and engine damage.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Civic on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool for at least 2-3 hours before opening the cooling system.
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain area.
  • A hose clamp is the metal spring or screw band that holds the hose tight to the radiator or engine fitting.
  • A petcock is a small radiator drain valve used to drain coolant without removing the lower hose first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Undercover Access Area

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and plastic trim clip remover to remove the fasteners or clips needed to access the radiator drain area under the front of your Civic.
  • Set the clips and bolts aside in a small container so they do not get lost.
  • Take photos before removing clips.

Step 2: Relieve Cooling System Pressure

  • Make sure the engine is cold.
  • Slowly loosen the coolant reservoir cap by hand to release any small remaining pressure.
  • If you hear pressure escaping, stop and wait until it finishes before removing the cap fully.

Step 3: Drain the Coolant

  • Position the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the radiator drain plug area.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch or your fingers, depending on access, to open the radiator drain petcock.
  • Let the coolant drain until the flow slows to a drip.
  • Close the drain petcock by hand, then snug gently with the flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch if needed.
  • Do not overtighten the plastic drain plug.

Step 4: Remove the Upper Radiator Hose

  • Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to squeeze the spring clamp at the radiator end of the upper hose.
  • Slide the clamp back onto the hose, away from the radiator neck.
  • Repeat this with the clamp at the engine end of the hose.
  • Twist the hose gently by hand to break it loose.
  • If the hose is stuck, use a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch carefully between the hose and fitting to loosen the edge. Do not gouge the plastic or aluminum fitting.
  • Pull the hose off both fittings and drain any remaining coolant into the drain pan 2-gallon minimum.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose

  • Move the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the lower radiator hose area.
  • Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to squeeze the lower hose clamp at the radiator connection.
  • Slide the clamp back onto the hose.
  • Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) or slip-joint pliers 10-inch to move the engine-side clamp back.
  • Twist the hose by hand, then pull it off the radiator and engine fittings.
  • Catch remaining coolant in the drain pan.
  • Expect extra coolant from the lower hose.

Step 6: Compare the New Hoses

  • Lay the old and new hoses side by side on a clean surface.
  • Make sure the bends, length, and end diameters match before installing.
  • If the hose has molded bends, do not force it into a different direction.

Step 7: Clean the Hose Fittings

  • Use shop towels to wipe the radiator and engine hose fittings clean.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver 1/4-inch only to gently remove old rubber stuck to the fitting, if needed.
  • Do not scratch or crack the radiator neck.

Step 8: Install the Lower Radiator Hose

  • Slide the lower hose clamps onto the new lower radiator hose.
  • Push the hose fully onto the radiator fitting and engine fitting by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to position each clamp behind the raised bead on the fitting.
  • The raised bead is the lip near the end of the fitting that helps keep the hose from slipping off.
  • Make sure the clamp sits square and does not pinch the hose.

Step 9: Install the Upper Radiator Hose

  • Slide the upper hose clamps onto the new upper radiator hose.
  • Push the hose fully onto the radiator fitting and engine fitting by hand.
  • Use hose clamp pliers (specialty) to move each clamp into its original position behind the fitting bead.
  • Confirm the hose does not rub the fan, belt area, or sharp brackets.

Step 10: Refill the Cooling System

  • Place a funnel with narrow spout into the coolant reservoir fill opening.
  • Slowly add Honda-compatible premixed coolant until the coolant level reaches the MAX mark on the reservoir.
  • Pause a few times while filling to let air bubbles rise out.

Step 11: Bleed Air from the Cooling System

  • Leave the coolant reservoir cap off.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Set the cabin heater to full hot and the blower to low using the climate controls.
  • Watch the coolant level in the reservoir and add Honda-compatible premixed coolant as the level drops.
  • Let the engine idle until the radiator fan cycles on and off once.
  • Install the coolant reservoir cap by hand once the level stabilizes.
  • Never reach near moving fans.

Step 12: Check for Leaks

  • Use a flashlight if available, or inspect closely with safety glasses on.
  • Look at all four hose ends for drips or seepage.
  • If a clamp is not seated correctly, shut the engine off and let it cool before adjusting it with hose clamp pliers (specialty).

Step 13: Reinstall the Undercover Access Area

  • Use the plastic trim clip remover to align any clips if needed.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and torque wrench 1/4-inch drive to reinstall the undercover fasteners.
  • For small Honda splash shield bolts, tighten snugly only unless a specific fastener torque is available. Do not strip the plastic retainers.

✅ After Repair

  • Let your Civic cool completely, then recheck the coolant level in the reservoir.
  • Add Honda-compatible premixed coolant to the MAX mark if needed.
  • Drive for 10-15 minutes while watching the temperature gauge or warning light.
  • After the test drive, park on level ground and inspect all hose connections for leaks.
  • Dispose of old coolant at a recycling center or auto parts store that accepts used coolant.
  • If the engine overheats, the heater blows cold, or the coolant level keeps dropping, stop driving and recheck for trapped air or leaks.
