📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground and set the parking brake.
- ❄️ Let the engine cool completely, preferably overnight.
- 🧰 Open the hood and locate the upper and lower radiator hoses. The upper hose is easier to see; the lower hose is near the bottom of the radiator.
- 💧 A hose clamp is the metal band that squeezes the hose tight onto the fitting. Some are spring-style clamps, and some are worm-drive clamps with a screw.
- ♻️ Have a sealed container ready for used coolant. Do not pour coolant on the ground or into drains.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the Engine Is Cold
- Use your gloved hand to carefully touch the upper radiator hose. It should feel cool, not warm.
- Use safety glasses and nitrile gloves before opening the cooling system.
- Slowly remove the radiator cap by pressing down and turning counterclockwise by hand.
- Cold engine only.
Step 2: Position the Drain Pan
- Place the drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the passenger-side lower area of the radiator.
- Use clean shop towels around the work area to catch small spills.
Step 3: Drain Enough Coolant
- Use your hand or pliers 8-inch if needed to open the radiator drain cock at the lower radiator area.
- Drain coolant until the level is below the hose you are replacing.
- If the drain cock is difficult to access, use hose clamp pliers to loosen the lower hose clamp slightly and carefully drain coolant from the lower hose connection instead.
- Close the radiator drain cock by hand once enough coolant has drained. Do not overtighten plastic radiator fittings.
Step 4: Remove the Upper Radiator Hose
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze the spring clamp tabs at the radiator end of the upper hose.
- Slide the clamp a few inches back onto the hose.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move the clamp at the engine end of the upper hose the same way.
- If the hose is stuck, use a pick tool 90-degree to gently break the seal between the hose and fitting. Do not gouge the metal or plastic fitting.
- Twist the hose by hand, then pull it off both fittings.
- Twist first, then pull.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose
- Move the drain pan directly under the lower hose area.
- Use hose clamp pliers to squeeze and slide the lower radiator hose clamp away from the radiator fitting.
- Use hose clamp pliers to move the clamp at the engine-side connection away from the fitting.
- Use a pick tool 90-degree only if the hose is stuck. Work slowly so you do not damage the radiator outlet.
- Twist the lower hose by hand and remove it. More coolant will drain, so keep the drain pan in place.
Step 6: Inspect the Hose Fittings
- Use clean shop towels to wipe the radiator and engine hose fittings clean.
- Check for old rubber stuck to the fittings. Remove residue gently with the pick tool 90-degree.
- Do not sand or scrape plastic radiator fittings aggressively.
- If a radiator fitting is cracked or soft, the radiator should be replaced before installing new hoses.
Step 7: Install the New Lower Radiator Hose
- Compare the lower radiator hose to the old hose to make sure the bends and length match.
- Slide the hose clamps onto the new hose before installing it.
- Push the hose fully onto the radiator and engine fittings by hand until it seats past the raised bead on each fitting.
- Use hose clamp pliers to position each spring clamp behind the raised bead.
- If using worm-drive clamps, tighten with a flathead screwdriver 6mm tip or torque wrench inch-pound 20-200 in-lbs. Torque to 30-40 in-lbs.
- Clamp behind the bead.
Step 8: Install the New Upper Radiator Hose
- Compare the upper radiator hose to the old hose before installation.
- Slide the hose clamps onto the hose first.
- Push the hose fully onto the radiator neck and engine coolant outlet by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers to position spring clamps behind the raised bead on each fitting.
- If using worm-drive clamps, tighten with a flathead screwdriver 6mm tip or torque wrench inch-pound 20-200 in-lbs. Torque to 30-40 in-lbs.
Step 9: Refill the Cooling System
- Place a funnel long-neck into the radiator fill neck.
- Slowly add Subaru Super Coolant premixed 50/50 blue coolant until the radiator is full.
- Fill the coolant overflow reservoir to the “FULL” mark using the same coolant.
- If coolant spills, wipe it immediately with clean shop towels.
Step 10: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Leave the radiator cap off for now.
- Start the engine and set the heater to full hot with the blower on low.
- Watch the coolant level in the radiator. Add coolant with the funnel long-neck as the level drops.
- Let the engine idle until the radiator fans cycle on and warm air comes from the vents.
- Squeeze the upper radiator hose gently by hand several times to help move trapped air.
- When bubbling mostly stops and the level stays steady, install the radiator cap by hand.
- Air pockets cause overheating.
Step 11: Check for Leaks
- Use a flashlight if available, or inspect closely with safety glasses on.
- Look around all four hose ends for seepage, drips, or coolant smell.
- If a clamp is leaking, shut the engine off, let it cool, then reposition the clamp using hose clamp pliers.
- If worm-drive clamps are used, recheck clamp torque with the torque wrench inch-pound 20-200 in-lbs. Torque to 30-40 in-lbs.
