๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover Area Access if Needed
- Use your hands to remove any loose plastic beauty cover if it blocks access.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove any small access fasteners if needed.
- Set fasteners aside in a cup so they do not get lost.
- Take a photo first.
Step 2: Slowly Open the Coolant Reservoir Cap
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a shop towel over the coolant reservoir cap.
- Slowly loosen the cap by hand to release any leftover pressure.
- If you hear pressure hissing, stop and wait until it ends before fully removing the cap.
Step 3: Drain Some Coolant
- Place a drain pan 2-gallon minimum under the lower radiator hose area.
- If your radiator drain petcock is accessible, use your hand or a flat-blade screwdriver 6-inch to open it slowly.
- If the drain petcock is not easy to access, drain by removing the lower hose in the next step.
- Drain enough coolant so the hose connection is below the coolant level.
- Close the drain petcock by hand if used. Do not overtighten plastic parts.
Step 4: Remove the Upper Radiator Hose
- A hose clamp is the metal band that squeezes the hose tight to stop leaks.
- Use hose clamp pliers 45-degree or slip-joint pliers 10-inch to squeeze the clamp tabs together.
- Slide the clamp back several inches from the hose end.
- Repeat on the other end of the upper radiator hose.
- Use a pick tool 90-degree carefully between the hose and fitting to break the hose loose.
- Twist the hose by hand, then pull it off.
- Use shop towels to catch coolant drips.
- Twist first, then pull.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Radiator Hose
- Move the drain pan 2-gallon minimum directly under the lower hose.
- Use hose clamp pliers 45-degree or slip-joint pliers 10-inch to compress the lower hose clamp.
- Slide the clamp away from the hose end.
- Use the pick tool 90-degree gently to loosen the hose seal.
- Pull the lower hose off by hand and let the coolant drain into the pan.
- Repeat for the engine-side end of the lower hose.
Step 6: Clean the Hose Fittings
- Use a plastic scraper to remove stuck rubber, dried coolant, or crust from each hose fitting.
- Wipe the fittings clean with shop towels.
- Do not gouge aluminum or plastic fittings.
- The hose sealing area should feel smooth before installing the new hose.
Step 7: Install the New Lower Radiator Hose
- Compare the new lower radiator hose with the old one to confirm the bends and length match.
- Slide the new radiator hose clamps onto the hose before installing it.
- Push the hose fully onto the radiator and engine fittings by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers 45-degree to position each clamp behind the raised bead on the fitting.
- If using screw-style clamps, tighten with a flat-blade screwdriver 6-inch and torque wrench inch-pound 1/4-inch drive.
- Torque screw-style hose clamps to 3-4 Nm (27-35 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten. Too much force can crack plastic radiator necks.
Step 8: Install the New Upper Radiator Hose
- Compare the new upper radiator hose with the old one.
- Slide the new radiator hose clamps onto the hose.
- Push the hose fully onto the radiator and engine fittings by hand.
- Use hose clamp pliers 45-degree to place spring clamps in the same locations as the original clamps.
- If using screw-style clamps, use a flat-blade screwdriver 6-inch and torque wrench inch-pound 1/4-inch drive.
- Torque screw-style hose clamps to 3-4 Nm (27-35 in-lbs).
- Make sure the hose is not twisted or rubbing against sharp edges.
Step 9: Refill the Cooling System
- Install a funnel spill-free coolant fill kit at the coolant reservoir or radiator fill point, depending on access.
- Mix Hyundai-compatible ethylene glycol coolant concentrate with distilled water at a 50/50 ratio if using concentrate.
- Slowly pour coolant through the funnel until the reservoir reaches the full mark.
- Squeeze the upper radiator hose by hand several times to help push out trapped air.
- Keep extra coolant nearby because the level may drop while air escapes.
Step 10: Bleed Air from the Cooling System
- Start the engine and let it idle with the funnel spill-free coolant fill kit installed.
- Set the cabin heat to maximum temperature and fan to low using the climate controls.
- Watch the coolant level in the funnel. Add coolant as the level drops.
- Let the engine idle until the radiator fan cycles on or the upper hose becomes hot.
- Use shop towels to wipe any spills immediately.
- Do not touch the fan area while the engine is running.
Step 11: Check for Leaks
- With the engine idling, use a flashlight if available and visually inspect each hose end.
- Look for dripping, spraying, or white/green coolant residue.
- If a hose seeps, shut the engine off and let it cool before adjusting the clamp.
- Use hose clamp pliers 45-degree or flat-blade screwdriver 6-inch as needed to reposition or tighten the clamp.
Step 12: Reinstall Removed Access Parts
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall any removed access fasteners.
- Torque small 10mm access fasteners to 7-10 Nm (62-89 in-lbs).
- Reinstall any plastic cover by pressing it straight down by hand.
