🔧 Tucson - Headlight Bulb Replacement
This guide covers replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs on your Tucson (left and right). The most important part is safe handling and correct installation so the bulbs don’t fail early or aim incorrectly.
Assumption: Your Tucson has HID/Xenon low beams (D3S), common on Limited trims; steps note what to do if you find a different bulb.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ HID systems can produce high voltage—turn lights OFF, remove key, and disconnect the battery before touching the bulb/igniter.
- ⚠️ Let the headlight area cool if it was recently on; housings and bulbs get hot.
- ⚠️ Never touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; skin oil causes hot spots and short bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if you go through the wheel-well access.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Low beam HID headlight bulb (D3S) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
- Fender liner push clips - Qty: 4-8 Optional, in case any break
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 Optional
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, turn the steering wheel toward the side you’re working on, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the headlight switch OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Open the hood.
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal: use a 10mm socket, remove the negative cable, and wait at least 5 minutes. Gives the HID system time to discharge
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the front corner for access (recommended)
- Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift the front corner you’re working on.
- Set the vehicle securely on jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).
- If you want maximum room, remove the wheel using a 21mm lug socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- When reinstalling the wheel later: Torque to 90-110 Nm (66-81 ft-lbs).
Step 2: Pull back the front fender liner
- Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic push-clips along the front portion of the fender liner.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove any Phillips screws you see in that same area.
- Peel the liner back just enough to reach the rear of the headlight housing. You don’t need to remove the whole liner
Step 3: Remove the rear dust cap / access cover
- Reach behind the headlight and locate the round rear cover.
- Remove it by turning it counterclockwise by hand; if tight, use your nitrile gloves for grip.
- Set the cover somewhere clean so no dirt gets inside it.
Step 4: Disconnect the HID igniter connector
- Identify the igniter/connector on the back of the bulb (this is the electrical piece that powers the HID bulb).
- Press the lock tab and pull the connector straight off. If it’s stubborn, wiggle gently—do not yank the wires.
- If you see corrosion or moisture, dry it and apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal. (Dielectric grease helps prevent moisture, but do not smear it on the bulb.)
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- Release the bulb retaining ring/lock (commonly a twist-lock): rotate it counterclockwise and remove it.
- Carefully pull the bulb straight out.
- Use your flashlight to note the bulb’s orientation (tabs/slots). The new bulb must sit the same way.
Step 6: Install the new bulb (no touching glass)
- Put on clean nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
- Insert the new D3S bulb into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
- Reinstall the retaining ring/lock and rotate clockwise until fully locked (snug by hand).
- If you accidentally touch the glass, wipe it with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth, then let it dry.
Step 7: Reconnect the igniter connector and reinstall the cover
- Push the connector onto the bulb/igniter until it clicks/locks.
- Reinstall the rear dust cap/access cover and tighten by hand (clockwise). Make sure it seats evenly to keep moisture out.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1-7 for the other headlight.
- Work slowly—mirror-image steps apply on the opposite side.
Step 9: Reinstall fender liner and wheel
- Reposition the fender liner and reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool (to align) and your hand pressure to seat them.
- Reinstall any screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- If the wheel was removed, reinstall and torque to 90-110 Nm (66-81 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench (10-150 Nm range).
- Lower the vehicle using the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum).
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Ensure the terminal is snug (do not overtighten).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams fire up and stay on (HID bulbs may take a second to reach full brightness).
- Check that the rear dust caps are fully sealed and no wiring is pinched.
- At night on a flat road or facing a wall, confirm both beams look even. Mis-seated bulbs cause odd beam patterns
- If a new bulb doesn’t light: turn lights OFF, recheck connector lock and bulb seating.
