🔧 Focus - Tail Light Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove each outer tail lamp housing from inside the trunk, swap the bulb in the bulb socket, then reinstall the lamp. This is a simple job, but you need to be gentle with the lamp alignment pins and trunk trim clips.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: “taillight bulbs” = the left & right outer brake/parking (tail) bulbs.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧤 Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
- đź‘“ Wear safety glasses when working under the trunk lid and around trim clips.
- 🧼 Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 8mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Trim clip remover (specialty)
- Flat trim tool
- Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Tail/brake bulb (3157 type) - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the lights off.
- 📦 Empty the trunk so you can access the trunk side liners behind each tail lamp.
- 🔦 Have your flashlight ready so you can see the bulb socket tabs clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the left tail lamp nuts (inside the trunk)
- Open the trunk and aim a flashlight at the left trunk side liner behind the tail lamp area.
- Use a trim clip remover (specialty) or flat trim tool to pop out the plastic push-clips holding the liner (pry the center pin out first, then remove the clip).
- Fold the trunk liner back to reveal the tail lamp mounting studs and nuts.
Step 2: Remove the left tail lamp assembly
- Use an 8mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp nuts.
- From outside the car, hold the lamp and gently pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- Pull straight back; don’t twist the lamp.
Step 3: Replace the bulb in the left tail lamp
- Locate the bulb socket on the back of the lamp (the round plastic twist-in holder).
- Turn the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- Wear nitrile gloves, pull the old bulb straight out, then push the new Tail/brake bulb (3157 type) straight in until fully seated.
- Reinstall the socket and turn clockwise until it locks.
Step 4: Reinstall the left tail lamp
- Align the lamp’s locating pins with the body holes, then press the lamp in until it sits flush.
- Install the nuts using the 8mm socket, 6" socket extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lb) (snug only; over-tightening can crack the lamp housing).
Step 5: Repeat on the right side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the right tail lamp using the same trim clip remover (specialty), 8mm socket, ratchet, and extension.
Step 6: Reinstall trunk liners and clips
- Reposition each trunk liner.
- Reinstall push-clips by inserting the clip body first, then pressing the center pin in using the flat trim tool (or finger pressure).
âś… After Repair
- đź’ˇ Turn on the parking lights to confirm both tail lights glow evenly.
- 🛑 Press the brake pedal (or have a helper press it) to confirm both brake lights work.
- 🔍 Check that both tail lamps sit flush with the body and there are no gaps.
