🔧 CX-5 - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Your CX-5 Signature uses LED headlamp assemblies from the factory, so there usually are not separate replaceable low-beam or high-beam “bulbs” like older halogen headlights. If a headlight is out, the repair is typically replacement of the LED headlight unit or related control component, not a bulb swap.
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours per side
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlights OFF and let the lamp assemblies cool before handling them.
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging headlamp connectors.
- ⚠️ Support the front bumper cover so it does not scratch the paint or strain wiring.
- ⚠️ The front radar/camera safety systems may require aiming or calibration if bumper-mounted components are disturbed.
- ⚠️ Do not open the sealed LED headlight housing. It is not serviced internally.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your CX-5 on a flat surface facing a wall or garage door.
- 🔒 Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 💡 Turn the light switch OFF.
- 📏 Mark the current headlight beam height on the wall with painter’s tape 1-inch before disassembly.
- 🔋 Disconnecting the battery can reset some vehicle settings, so make sure you know your basic infotainment preferences before starting.
- 📌 A push clip is a reusable plastic fastener, but old clips often break during removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Protect the painted edges
- Use painter’s tape 1-inch along the bumper-to-fender edges and around the headlight edges.
- Place a microfiber towel over painted areas where tools may contact.
- Tip: Tape prevents beginner scratches.
Step 2: Disconnect the battery
- Open the hood.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
Step 3: Raise and support the front if needed
- Use a floor jack rated 2-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands rated 2-ton minimum under the approved front side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the stands.
- Keep the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
Step 4: Remove upper radiator cover fasteners
- Use a plastic trim removal tool or panel clip remover to lift the center pins of the upper plastic push clips.
- Remove the clips by hand once the center pins are raised.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension 1/4-inch drive to remove any upper bumper retaining bolts.
- Set all fasteners in order on a clean towel.
Step 5: Remove wheel-well fasteners
- Turn the steering wheel left to access the right front wheel well, then right to access the left front wheel well.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the wheel-well screws at the bumper edge.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool or panel clip remover to remove the fender liner clips.
- Gently pull the liner back by hand to expose the bumper side retainers.
Step 6: Remove lower bumper cover fasteners
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the lower bumper bolts.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver for any lower screws.
- Use a panel clip remover for lower plastic clips.
Step 7: Release the bumper cover sides
- At each front fender edge, pull the bumper cover outward by hand to release the side clips.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool only if needed to help the clip release.
- Do not yank the bumper cover away because fog lamp, parking sensor, or harness connectors may still be attached.
Step 8: Move the bumper cover forward
- With a helper, slide the bumper cover forward just enough to access the headlight mounting bolts.
- Support the bumper cover on a microfiber towel or padded surface.
- If connectors are tight, unplug them by pressing the release tabs by hand.
Step 9: Remove the left headlight assembly
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension 1/4-inch drive to remove the headlight mounting bolts.
- Use the flashlight to check for hidden lower or side fasteners before pulling.
- Slide the headlight assembly forward by hand.
- Unplug the electrical connectors by pressing the locking tabs by hand.
Step 10: Install the left headlight assembly
- Plug the connectors into the new left LED headlight assembly until each connector clicks.
- Place the assembly into position by hand.
- Start all bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the headlight mounting bolts to Torque to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs).
Step 11: Repeat on the right side
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and flashlight to remove the right headlight mounting bolts.
- Slide the right headlight assembly forward by hand.
- Unplug the connectors by pressing the release tabs by hand.
- Install the new right LED headlight assembly.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the headlight mounting bolts to Torque to 7-9 Nm (62-80 in-lbs).
Step 12: Reconnect the battery for a function test
- Place the negative battery cable back on the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and torque wrench 1/4-inch drive to tighten the terminal nut to Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs).
- Turn the headlights ON and confirm both low beams illuminate.
- Test high beams, turn signals, parking lights, and daytime running lights.
- Turn the lights OFF after testing.
Step 13: Reinstall the bumper cover
- With a helper, align the bumper cover with the fender clips and upper support.
- Press the bumper sides into the fender retainers by hand until they click.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall the upper and lower bolts.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the wheel-well and lower screws.
- Use your hands to reinstall push clips, pressing the center pins flush.
- Tighten small bumper bolts snugly only: Torque to 6-8 Nm (53-71 in-lbs).
Step 14: Reinstall wheel-well liners and covers
- Use your hands to position the fender liners behind the bumper edges.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall screws.
- Use replacement fender liner push clips where old clips are loose or broken.
- Use replacement front bumper cover push clips where needed.
Step 15: Lower the vehicle
- Use the floor jack rated 2-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 2-ton minimum.
- Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground.
- Remove the wheel chocks.
Step 16: Check headlight aim
- Park on level ground facing the same wall used before disassembly.
- Turn the headlights ON.
- Compare the beam cutoff to your painter’s tape 1-inch marks.
- If the beam is clearly too high, too low, or uneven, use a professional headlight aiming tool.
- Tip: Bad aim blinds other drivers.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both headlights, high beams, turn signals, parking lights, and daytime running lights operate correctly.
- ✅ Check that the bumper cover gaps are even on both sides.
- ✅ After driving at night, verify the beam pattern is safe and not aimed into oncoming traffic.
- ✅ If adaptive lighting warnings appear, scan the vehicle and perform the required headlamp aiming or calibration procedure.
- ✅ If front radar or camera warnings appear, professional ADAS calibration may be required.
