🔧 Camry - Ignition Coil Replacement
On your Camry Hybrid, the ignition coils sit on top of the engine and each one plugs directly onto a spark plug. Replacing a weak coil can fix misfires, rough running, and flashing check engine lights.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Let the engine cool completely before starting. Coils and the valve cover area can get very hot.
- Turn the vehicle fully OFF and keep the key/fob away from the car.
- Hybrid warning: the ignition system is low-voltage, but do not touch any orange high-voltage cables or components.
- Use care around the coil connectors. Broken lock tabs are common on older connectors.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair, but it is a safe extra step if you want maximum protection from electrical shorts.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 3/8-inch ratchet
- 3-inch extension
- Torque wrench
- Flat trim tool
- Needle-nose pliers
- Safety glasses
- Mechanic gloves
🔩 Required Parts

- Ignition coil boots - Qty: 4
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Make sure the engine is cool to the touch.
- Open the hood and remove any engine covers that block access.
- Have a clean work area ready so no dirt falls into the spark plug wells.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover
- Use your hands to lift off the plastic engine cover.
- If it feels stuck, pull straight up evenly at the mounting points.
Step 2: Access the ignition coils
- Look on top of the engine for the four coil packs mounted in a row.
- Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells.
Step 3: Disconnect each coil connector
- Press the lock tab on each electrical connector.
- Use a flat trim tool if a tab is tight, then pull the connector straight back.
- Do not yank on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the coil retaining bolts
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 3-inch extension to remove each coil bolt.
- Keep the bolts in order so they go back to the same spot.
- Torque on installation: 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)
Step 5: Pull out the old coils
- Twist each coil gently, then pull it straight up.
- If the boot sticks, use needle-nose pliers carefully on the coil body, not the wire.
Step 6: Inspect the spark plug wells
- Look for oil, water, or debris in each well.
- If you find contamination, clean it out before installing the new coils.
- Oil in the wells usually means a valve cover leak.
Step 7: Install the new coils
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside each new coil boot.
- Push each new coil straight down onto its spark plug until fully seated.
- Install the 10mm bolt by hand first, then tighten with the 10mm socket.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)
Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connectors
- Push each connector on until it clicks.
- Make sure the lock tab is fully engaged.
Step 9: Reinstall the engine cover
- Set the cover back in place and press down at the mounting points.
- Make sure it sits flush and does not wobble.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for smooth idle.
- Check that the check engine light is off.
- If a misfire code was present, clear it with a scan tool and recheck after a short test drive.
- If the engine still runs rough, the spark plugs may also need service.
