- Park your RAV4 on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Press POWER once to turn the vehicle OFF. Make sure the dash is dark and the READY light is off.
- Move the key fob at least 15 feet away from the vehicle.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool for at least 20-30 minutes if it was recently driven.
- A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to the correct tightness so they are not left loose or over-tightened.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease used lightly inside the coil boot to help seal out moisture.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the 12V Battery Negative Cable
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the 12V negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back into contact.
- Take a photo first.
Step 2: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover
- Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward from its rubber mounting grommets.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool gently near the mounting points.
- Set the cover aside where it will not get scratched or stepped on.
Step 3: Locate the Ignition Coils
- Look across the top of the engine for four identical ignition coils, each with an electrical connector and one small retaining bolt.
- Use compressed air duster to blow dirt away from the area around each coil before removal.
- Wipe loose debris with shop towels.
- Dirt must not fall into the spark plug tube.
Step 4: Unplug One Ignition Coil Connector
- Use your thumb to press the locking tab on the coil connector, then pull the connector straight back.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help release the lock.
- If the connector is hard to grip, use needle-nose pliers carefully on the connector body, not the wires.
- Do not pull on the wires.
Step 5: Remove the Coil Retaining Bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension 6-inch, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
- Place the bolt somewhere safe so it does not fall into the engine bay.
Step 6: Remove the Ignition Coil
- Grip the ignition coil body by hand and twist it gently left and right to break the rubber boot loose.
- Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug tube.
- Inspect the removed coil for oil, water, cracking, or burn marks.
- If oil is found inside the spark plug tube, the valve cover tube seals may also need repair.
Step 7: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Compare the new ignition coil to the old one by length, connector shape, and bolt tab position.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot opening using the tube tip.
- Do not coat the metal electrical terminal or fill the boot with grease.
- A pea-size amount is plenty.
Step 8: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Push the new coil straight down into the spark plug tube by hand until it seats fully on the spark plug.
- Make sure the bolt hole lines up with the mounting point on the valve cover.
- Install the retaining bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
Step 9: Tighten the Coil Retaining Bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension 6-inch, and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the coil bolt.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Do not over-tighten; the valve cover threads can be damaged.
Step 10: Reconnect the Coil Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until the locking tab clicks.
- Lightly tug the connector by hand to confirm it is locked.
Step 11: Repeat for the Remaining Coils
- If replacing more than one coil, repeat Steps 4-10 for each coil.
- Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, 3/8-inch extension 6-inch, and torque wrench inch-pound range for each retaining bolt.
- Torque each coil bolt to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Work one coil at a time.
Step 12: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Line up the engine cover with its rubber grommets.
- Press down firmly by hand over each mounting point until the cover seats securely.
Step 13: Reconnect the 12V Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal clamp snugly.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs) if using a torque wrench on the terminal nut.
✅ After Repair
- Start your RAV4 and make sure the READY light comes on normally.
- Listen for smooth engine operation when the gasoline engine starts.
- Check that the check engine light is not flashing.
- If the check engine light was already on, a scan tool may be needed to clear stored misfire codes after confirming the repair.
- Take a short test drive and verify there is no shaking, hesitation, or misfire under light acceleration.
- After reconnecting the 12V battery, the auto-up window function may need relearning: fully close each affected window and hold the switch up for a few seconds.
