- Park your 1500 on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and keep the key fob away from the truck.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
- Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative 12V battery cable. Move it aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
- For beginner DIY work, replace all 6 coils if the truck has high mileage or multiple misfire codes. If only one coil failed, replace only that cylinder’s coil.
- On the 3.6L V6, the passenger-side coils are usually easy to reach. The driver-side coils may require moving or removing intake components for access.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Lift the plastic engine cover straight upward by hand. It is held by rubber grommets, which are soft push-in mounts.
- Set the cover aside in a safe place.
- Pull evenly from both sides.
Step 2: Disconnect the 12V Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Remove the negative cable from the battery post.
- Wrap the cable end with a clean rag or position it away from the battery so it cannot touch the post.
Step 3: Identify the Ignition Coils
- Look along the top outer edges of the V6 cylinder heads. Each ignition coil sits directly above a spark plug.
- An ignition coil is a small electrical module that turns battery voltage into the high voltage needed to fire the spark plug.
- Each coil has one electrical connector and one small retaining bolt.
- Use compressed air nozzle to blow dirt away from each coil area before removal.
Step 4: Remove Intake Parts for Access if Needed
- If a coil is blocked by the air intake tube, use a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp.
- Use needle-nose pliers to release any spring clamps on small hoses attached to the intake tube.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic push clips holding nearby wiring or covers.
- Lift the intake tube out of the way carefully.
- If the driver-side rear coils are still blocked, the upper intake manifold may need to be removed. If removed, install new upper intake manifold gaskets during reassembly.
Step 5: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connector
- Press the lock tab on the coil electrical connector by hand.
- If the tab is tight, use a flathead screwdriver gently to help release it.
- Pull the connector straight off the coil. Do not pull on the wires.
- Plastic tabs break easily with age.
Step 6: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
- Place the bolt in a cup or magnetic tray so it does not get lost.
Step 7: Remove the Old Ignition Coil
- Grip the coil body by hand.
- Twist it gently left and right to loosen the rubber boot from the spark plug.
- Pull the coil straight upward and out of the spark plug well.
- If the rubber boot sticks, pull slowly so it does not tear and leave pieces behind.
Step 8: Inspect the Spark Plug Well
- Use a flashlight to look into the spark plug well.
- Use compressed air nozzle to blow out dust or debris.
- Do not drop dirt, bolts, or tools into the spark plug well.
- If you see oil inside the well, the valve cover tube seal may be leaking and should be repaired before installing new coils.
Step 9: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Compare the new coil to the old coil by hand. The shape, connector, boot length, and bolt hole should match.
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot using a dielectric grease applicator.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps seal out moisture and makes future removal easier.
- Do not pack the boot full of grease. A thin film is enough.
Step 10: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Push the new coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
- You should feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
- Align the coil bolt hole with the mounting hole.
- Start the retaining bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
Step 11: Tighten the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the coil bolt.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)
- Do not overtighten. The coil mounts into aluminum, which can strip if forced.
Step 12: Reconnect the Coil Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the coil by hand until it clicks.
- Lightly tug the connector by hand to make sure it is locked.
Step 13: Repeat for the Remaining Coils
- Repeat Steps 5 through 12 for each ignition coil being replaced.
- Use the same 8mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and torque wrench inch-pound on each coil bolt.
- Torque each ignition coil bolt to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)
- Replace coils one at a time so connectors do not get mixed up.
Step 14: Reinstall Intake Parts
- If removed, place the air intake tube back into position by hand.
- Use an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver to tighten the hose clamps until snug.
- Reconnect any hoses by hand or with needle-nose pliers if spring clamps were used.
- Use trim clip removal tool by hand to reinstall any clips that were removed.
- If the upper intake manifold was removed, install new gaskets and tighten the fasteners evenly in stages.
- Torque upper intake manifold bolts to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs)
Step 15: Reconnect the 12V Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal clamp.
- The terminal should not twist by hand after tightening.
Step 16: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Line up the engine cover with the rubber mounting grommets.
- Press down firmly by hand until the cover seats fully.

- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Listen for smooth idle and check that the engine does not shake.
- If the check-engine light was on, use a scan tool to clear stored misfire codes after confirming the repair.
- Take a short test drive. Accelerate gently first, then normally once the engine feels smooth.
- Recheck that all connectors, hoses, and intake clamps are secure.
- If the misfire remains on the same cylinder, inspect the spark plug, injector, compression, and wiring for that cylinder.
