🔧 Escalade - Ignition Coil Replacement
Your Escalade has 8 ignition coils (one per cylinder) that create the spark to run the engine smoothly. Replacing a failed coil can fix misfires, rough idle, flashing check engine light, and loss of power.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.8-1.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot exhaust/engine parts.
- ⚠️ Keep keys away from the vehicle so the engine can’t be started accidentally.
- ⚠️ If you have a misfire with a flashing check engine light, avoid driving until repaired (can damage the catalytic converter).
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is recommended: remove the negative cable to reduce the chance of accidental shorts.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 3"-6" socket extension (1/4" drive)
- Torque wrench (inch-pound)
- Trim clip tool
- Pick tool
- Shop rags
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Ignition coil - Qty: 1 (or Qty: 8 if replacing all)
- Ignition coil boot - Qty: 1 (optional, if torn/swollen)
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 (small packet)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully.
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket. Tuck the cable so it can’t spring back. Negative terminal is the “-” post.
- If you’re chasing a misfire code (P0300/P0301-P0308), plan to replace coils one at a time so nothing gets mixed up.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover
- Grip the plastic engine cover and pull upward firmly to pop it off the rubber mounts.
- If a cover fastener/clip is present, release it with a trim clip tool.
- Set the cover aside where it won’t get scratched.
Step 2: Choose the coil you’re replacing
- Locate the coil on the valve cover (black rectangular unit) with an electrical connector and a short plug wire/boot leading to the spark plug.
- Do one coil at a time to stay organized.
Step 3: Unplug the coil electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off by hand.
- If it’s stubborn, gently help the tab with a pick tool (don’t pry hard—plastic breaks easily).
Step 4: Remove the coil mounting bolt(s)
- Remove the coil bolt(s) using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and socket extension.
- Put the bolt(s) somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the engine bay.
Step 5: Remove the coil/boot from the spark plug
- Twist the coil/boot slightly, then pull upward to release it from the spark plug.
- If the boot sticks, use a gentle twist-and-pull motion—don’t yank the wire.
Step 6: Prep the new coil
- Compare the new coil to the old one (same connector, same shape).
- Apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease inside the boot (this is a silicone grease that helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier).
Step 7: Install the new coil
- Push the boot straight down onto the spark plug until you feel it fully seat.
- Install the mounting bolt(s) by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the coil bolt(s) with a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 89 lb-in (10 Nm).
Step 8: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.
- Give it a gentle tug to confirm it’s fully latched.
Step 9: Reinstall the engine cover
- Line up the cover over its mounting points and press down firmly until it seats.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Tighten snugly (do not over-tighten the battery terminal).
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. It should run smoothly.
- If the check engine light was on, it may take a few drive cycles to go out, or you can clear codes with a scan tool.
- Do a short test drive and recheck for rough running, flashing light, or fuel smell.
- If you still have a misfire on the same cylinder, the next common causes are the spark plug, plug wire/boot, injector issue, or a vacuum leak.
đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $180-$450 (parts + labor, depends on how many coils)
DIY Cost: $45-$520 (parts only, single coil vs all 8)
You Save: $100-$250+ by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.8-1.2 hours.
