- Honda J35 cylinder layout: rear bank near firewall is cylinders 1-2-3, passenger to driver side; front bank near radiator is cylinders 4-5-6, passenger to driver side.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Ignition Coils
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- The ignition coils sit directly on top of the spark plugs. They are black plastic units with one electrical connector and one 10mm hold-down bolt each.
- The front three coils are easier to see near the radiator. The rear three are closer to the firewall.
- Use good lighting here.
Step 2: Remove the Engine Cover if Needed
- If the plastic engine cover blocks access, lift it upward by hand or use a plastic trim removal tool to gently release it from the rubber mounting grommets.
- Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
- A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps lift covers without scratching or cracking them.
Step 3: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Wait 2 minutes before unplugging ignition connectors.
Step 4: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connector
- Choose one coil to replace first.
- Press the release tab on the coil electrical connector with your thumb.
- Pull the connector straight back by the plastic connector body.
- If it is stuck, gently wiggle it while pressing the tab. Do not pull on the wires.
- One coil at a time prevents mix-ups.
Step 5: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to remove the coil hold-down bolt.
- Place the bolt in a small safe spot so it does not fall into the engine bay.
Step 6: Remove the Old Ignition Coil
- Grip the top of the ignition coil by hand.
- Twist it slightly left and right to loosen the rubber boot from the spark plug.
- Pull the coil straight upward and out of the spark plug tube.
- Inspect the old coil boot for oil, moisture, cracking, or carbon tracking. Carbon tracking looks like a thin black lightning-shaped line and can cause misfires.
Step 7: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Compare the new ignition coil to the old one. The connector shape, bolt tab, and rubber boot length should match.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the end of the rubber boot using the packet tip.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps seal moisture out of the boot.
- Do not fill the boot with grease. A light film is enough.
Step 8: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Slide the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug tube by hand.
- Push gently until you feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
- Make sure the bolt hole lines up with the mounting boss on the valve cover.
Step 9: Reinstall the Coil Bolt
- Start the 10mm bolt by hand for a few turns to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension to snug the bolt.
- Use a torque wrench rated in inch-pounds to tighten the bolt to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten. The mounting area can crack.
Step 10: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the coil connector onto the new ignition coil until it clicks.
- Lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 11: Repeat for Additional Coils if Needed
- Repeat Steps 4-10 for any other ignition coils being replaced.
- Use the same 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and torque wrench rated in inch-pounds.
- If replacing all six coils, do the front bank first, then the rear bank.
- Take photos before unplugging connectors.
Step 12: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Place the engine cover back over its mounting points.
- Press it down by hand until the rubber grommets seat fully.
- If needed, use a plastic trim removal tool only to guide the cover gently into position.
Step 13: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the clamp until it does not rotate by hand.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
Step 14: Clear Codes and Test
- Plug the OBD2 scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver-side dash.
- Turn the ignition ON without starting the engine.
- Use the scan tool menu to clear stored misfire codes.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Listen for smooth idle and check that the check engine light does not flash.
