Replacing the ignition coils on your Odyssey is a straightforward repair that can fix misfires, rough idle, poor acceleration, or a flashing check-engine light caused by a weak coil. The V6 engine uses one coil per cylinder, mounted directly on top of each spark plug.

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before starting. The rear bank is close to hot exhaust parts.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on ignition coil wires. Always release the connector tab first.
  • ⚠️ Work on one coil at a time if you are not replacing all six, so parts do not get mixed up.
  • ⚠️ If the check-engine light is flashing, avoid driving until the misfire is repaired to protect the catalytic converters.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Odyssey on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool for at least 30-60 minutes.
  • Use a 10mm battery terminal wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • If you are replacing only the failed coil, use an OBD2 scan tool first to read the misfire code.
  • Misfire code guide: P0301 is cylinder 1, P0302 is cylinder 2, P0303 is cylinder 3, P0304 is cylinder 4, P0305 is cylinder 5, and P0306 is cylinder 6.
  • The front cylinder bank is easier to reach. The rear cylinder bank may require upper intake manifold removal for proper access on this Odyssey.
  • An ignition coil is the small electrical part that turns battery voltage into high voltage for the spark plug.
  • An intake manifold gasket seals the air passage between the intake manifold and engine. Replace it if the manifold is removed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the engine cover fasteners, if equipped.
  • Lift the engine cover straight up and set it aside.
  • Keep bolts in a small cup.

Step 2: Identify the Coil You Are Replacing

  • Use an OBD2 scan tool to confirm the misfire cylinder if replacing only one coil.
  • Stand at the front bumper and look toward the engine.
  • The front bank coils are the easiest to see and remove.
  • The rear bank coils sit between the engine and firewall and are harder to access.

Step 3: Clean Around the Coil Area

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use a compressed air nozzle to blow dirt away from the ignition coil area.
  • This helps keep grit from falling into the spark plug tube.

Step 4: Disconnect the Ignition Coil Connector

  • Use your thumb to press the electrical connector release tab.
  • If the tab is stiff, use a flat trim tool gently under the connector body.
  • Slide the connector straight off the ignition coil.
  • Do not pry on the wires.
  • Plastic tabs break easily with age.

Step 5: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the coil hold-down bolt.
  • Set the bolt aside where it cannot fall into the engine bay.

Step 6: Remove the Old Ignition Coil

  • Grip the ignition coil body by hand.
  • Twist it gently left and right to loosen the rubber boot.
  • Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug tube.
  • If it sticks, use needle-nose pliers only on the upper plastic body, not the rubber boot.

Step 7: Inspect the Coil and Spark Plug Tube

  • Look for oil inside the spark plug tube using a light.
  • If oil is present, the valve cover tube seals may be leaking and should be repaired before installing new coils.
  • Check the old coil boot for cracks, white burn marks, or swelling.
  • Use a compressed air nozzle to clear loose debris from the tube.

Step 8: Install the New Ignition Coil

  • Push the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug tube by hand.
  • You should feel the rubber boot seat onto the spark plug.
  • Install the coil hold-down bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolt to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Push the connector straight onto the ignition coil until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector by the plastic body to confirm it is locked.

Step 10: Repeat for Other Front Coils

  • Use the same 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet for the remaining easy-access coils.
  • Replace coils one at a time so every connector returns to its correct coil.
  • Tighten each coil bolt to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Rear Bank Access, If Needed

  • If replacing rear bank coils, use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove any intake duct clamps and brackets blocking access.
  • Use a flat trim tool to release plastic harness clips carefully.
  • If the upper intake manifold must be removed for access, use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to remove the upper intake manifold fasteners.
  • Remove the upper intake manifold carefully and replace the upper intake manifold gaskets before reinstalling it.
  • If the throttle body is separated from the intake manifold, replace the throttle body gasket.
  • Reinstall intake manifold fasteners evenly and tighten in stages to Torque to 22 Nm (16 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall throttle body fasteners evenly to Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
  • Do not reuse flattened intake gaskets.

Step 12: Reinstall the Engine Cover

  • Place the engine cover back into position.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to reinstall the cover fasteners snugly.
  • Do not overtighten plastic cover fasteners.

Step 13: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm battery terminal wrench to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the terminal until it does not move by hand.

Step 14: Clear Codes and Test

  • Use an OBD2 scan tool to clear stored misfire codes.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
  • Listen for smooth idle and confirm the check-engine light stays off.

  • Drive your Odyssey gently for 10-15 minutes and check that acceleration is smooth.
  • Use an OBD2 scan tool after the test drive to check for pending misfire codes.
  • If a misfire code returns on the same cylinder, inspect the spark plug, fuel injector, and compression for that cylinder.
  • If a different cylinder misfire appears, double-check that each coil connector is fully seated.
  • If the battery was disconnected, reset the clock and any saved radio or driver settings if needed.
