🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Stand at the front of your Tucson and locate the plastic engine cover on top of the engine.
- Use both hands to pull the cover straight upward. It is held by rubber grommets, not screws.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool gently under the edge to help lift it.
- Set the cover aside somewhere clean.
- Pull upward, not sideways.
Step 2: Locate the Ignition Coils
- Look across the top of the valve cover. You will see four ignition coils in a row.
- Each coil has one electrical connector and one small 10mm retaining bolt.
- If replacing only one coil, match it to the cylinder with the misfire code. Cylinder 1 is at the passenger side of the engine, and cylinder 4 is at the driver side.
Step 3: Disconnect the Coil Electrical Connector
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Press the locking tab on the coil connector with your thumb or a plastic trim removal tool.
- Pull the connector straight back by the plastic body.
- Do not pull on the wires.
- If the connector is tight, gently wiggle it while pressing the lock tab.
Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the coil retaining bolt.
- Place the bolt in a safe spot so it does not fall into the engine bay.

Step 5: Remove the Old Ignition Coil
- Grip the top of the ignition coil firmly by hand.
- Twist the coil gently left and right to loosen the rubber boot from the spark plug.
- Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug well.
- If the boot is stuck, keep twisting gently. Do not pry hard against the valve cover.
Step 6: Inspect the Coil Well
- Use a flashlight to look down into the spark plug well.
- Check for oil, water, corrosion, or broken rubber from the old boot.
- If you see oil in the well, the valve cover gasket may be leaking and should be repaired before installing new coils.
- If the well is dry and clean, continue.
Step 7: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot opening of the new ignition coil.
- Do not pack the boot full of grease. A thin film is enough.
- Compare the new coil to the old coil to make sure the shape, bolt tab, connector, and boot length match.
Step 8: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Slide the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug well.
- Push down until you feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
- Line up the coil bolt hole with the valve cover mounting hole.
- Install the retaining bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and torque wrench to tighten the bolt to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector straight onto the new coil until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
- Repeat Steps 3-9 for any additional ignition coils being replaced.
Step 10: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Place the plastic engine cover back over the mounting posts.
- Push down firmly at each corner by hand until the rubber grommets seat.
- Make sure the cover sits flat and does not touch any loose wiring.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm wrench to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Tucson and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
- Listen for a smooth idle with no shaking or misfire.
- If the check engine light was on, it may turn off after several drive cycles, but a scan tool can clear stored misfire codes immediately.
- Take a short test drive and accelerate gently, then moderately, to confirm the misfire is gone.
- If the engine still misfires, inspect the spark plug, coil connector, wiring, and fuel injector for that cylinder.
