Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery post.
- Black cable is negative.
Step 2: Remove the Engine Cover or Intake Resonator if Equipped
- If your F-150 has a plastic engine appearance cover, lift it upward by hand to release it from the rubber mounting grommets.
- If an air intake resonator blocks access, use an 8mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to loosen the intake tube clamp.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently release any plastic push clips. A trim tool helps remove plastic clips without breaking them.
- Move the intake duct only as much as needed for access.
Step 3: Find the Ignition Coils
- Look along the top outer edges of both cylinder heads. Each ignition coil sits directly above one spark plug.
- Each coil has one electrical connector and one small retaining bolt.
- If replacing one coil, match the misfire code to the cylinder number before removing anything.
- Work one coil at a time.
Step 4: Unplug the Coil Connector
- Press the locking tab on the electrical connector with your finger.
- If the tab is stiff, use needle-nose pliers carefully to press the tab, then pull the connector straight back.
- Do not pull on the wires.
- If dirt is around the coil, wipe the area with a shop towel before removing it.
Step 5: Remove the Coil Retaining Bolt
- Use an 8mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch socket extension to remove the ignition coil retaining bolt.
- Set the bolt aside in a safe spot.
- The retaining bolt is small, so loosen it gently.
Step 6: Remove the Old Ignition Coil
- Twist the ignition coil slightly by hand to loosen the rubber boot from the spark plug.
- Pull the coil straight upward.
- If it feels stuck, keep twisting gently while pulling. Do not pry hard against the plastic coil body.
- Inspect the old coil boot for oil, coolant, cracks, or carbon tracking. Carbon tracking looks like a thin black lightning mark and can cause repeat misfires.
Step 7: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Compare the new coil to the old coil to make sure the connector shape, bolt tab, and boot length match.
- Apply a small amount of spark plug boot dielectric grease inside the end of the rubber boot. Dielectric grease is non-conductive grease that helps keep moisture out and prevents the boot from sticking.
- Do not pack the boot full of grease.
- A pea-size amount is enough.
Step 8: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Push the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
- You should feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
- Line up the bolt hole with the mounting point.
Step 9: Tighten the Coil Retaining Bolt
- Start the bolt by hand first so it does not cross-thread.
- Use an 8mm socket, 6-inch socket extension, and torque wrench rated in inch-pounds to tighten the bolt.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten. The mounting tab can crack.
Step 10: Reconnect the Coil Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the new coil until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector body by hand to confirm it is locked.
- Repeat Steps 4-10 for any other ignition coils being replaced.
Step 11: Reinstall Intake Parts and Engine Cover
- If you moved the intake duct, reinstall it in its original position.
- Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the intake tube clamp snugly.
- If the engine cover was removed, press it down by hand until the rubber grommets seat.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the terminal clamp.
- Do not overtighten the battery clamp.
Step 13: Clear Codes and Start the Engine
- Plug the OBD-II scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side dashboard.
- Clear stored misfire codes if repairs are complete.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Listen for smooth idle and check that the check engine light does not flash.
