🔧 F-150 - Ignition Coil Replacement

Replacing the ignition coils on your F-150 means removing the coil-on-plug units from the top of the spark plugs and installing new ones. A weak ignition coil can cause misfires, rough idle, flashing check engine light, poor fuel economy, or reduced power.

  • ⚠️ Work only with the engine completely cool because the turbocharged 2.7L engine gets very hot.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils to reduce the chance of electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring. Always press the connector tab and pull the connector body.
  • ⚠️ Replace coils one at a time so the connectors and coil locations do not get mixed up.
  • ⚠️ If the check engine light is flashing, avoid driving until the misfire is repaired because catalytic converter damage can occur.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your F-150 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • ❄️ Let the engine cool fully before starting.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal, then move the cable away from the battery post.
  • 🧠 If you have a misfire code, use an OBD-II scan tool first. Codes like P0301 through P0306 identify which cylinder is misfiring.
  • ℹ️ An OBD-II scan tool is a small plug-in tool that reads fault codes from the truck’s computer.
  • ℹ️ Dielectric grease is non-conductive grease used inside the rubber boot to help seal out moisture.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Remove the Engine Cover

  • Use your hands to lift off the plastic engine cover if equipped.
  • If any retaining clips are tight, use a trim clip removal tool to gently release them.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
  • Pull straight up, not sideways.

Step 2: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it so it cannot spring back.
  • This helps protect the ignition circuit while you unplug the coils.

Step 3: Locate the Ignition Coils

  • The 2.7L EcoBoost V6 has six ignition coils, one mounted above each spark plug.
  • Each coil has an electrical connector and a small retaining bolt.
  • Work on one coil at a time to avoid mixing parts or connectors.

Step 4: Clean Around the Coil Area

  • Put on safety glasses.
  • Use compressed air blow gun to blow dirt away from the coil and spark plug well area.
  • Use shop towels to wipe loose dust from the top of the valve cover area.
  • This keeps grit from falling down into the spark plug tube.

Step 5: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connector

  • Press the locking tab on the coil connector with your thumb.
  • If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help depress the lock.
  • Pull the connector straight back by the plastic connector body.
  • Do not pull on the wires.
  • Old plastic breaks easily.

Step 6: Remove the Coil Retaining Bolt

  • Use an 8mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the ignition coil retaining bolt.
  • Place the bolt in a safe spot so it does not fall into the engine bay.

Step 7: Remove the Ignition Coil

  • Grip the ignition coil body by hand.
  • Twist the coil gently left and right to loosen the rubber boot.
  • Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug well.
  • If the rubber boot sticks, keep twisting gently while pulling upward.

Step 8: Inspect the Old Coil and Spark Plug Well

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the coil boot area.
  • Look for oil, coolant, water, carbon tracking, cracks, or a torn rubber boot.
  • Carbon tracking looks like thin black lightning marks on the boot or spark plug porcelain.
  • If oil is inside the spark plug well, the valve cover sealing area may need repair before installing new coils.

Step 9: Prepare the New Ignition Coil

  • Apply a small pea-sized amount of dielectric grease inside the end of the new coil boot.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe away excess grease from the outside of the boot.
  • Do not pack the boot full of grease.

Step 10: Install the New Ignition Coil

  • Push the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
  • You should feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
  • Make sure the bolt hole lines up with the valve cover mounting point.

Step 11: Tighten the Coil Retaining Bolt

  • Start the retaining bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use an 8mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to snug the bolt.
  • Use a torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the bolt to Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten. The valve cover mounting boss can be damaged.

Step 12: Reconnect the Coil Connector

  • Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.

Step 13: Repeat for Any Remaining Coils

  • Use the same 8mm socket, extension, ratchet, and torque wrench for each additional ignition coil.
  • Replace each coil one at a time.
  • Make sure every connector is fully clicked into place before moving on.

Step 14: Reinstall the Engine Cover

  • Set the engine cover back into position by hand.
  • Press down firmly over the mounting points until it seats.
  • If clips were removed, use the trim clip removal tool and your hands to reinstall them carefully.

Step 15: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

Step 16: Clear Codes and Test Run

  • Plug the OBD-II scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
  • Use the OBD-II scan tool to clear stored misfire codes if the repair was done for a check engine light.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Listen for smooth idle and confirm there is no shaking or flashing check engine light.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Let the engine idle for 2-3 minutes and watch for rough running.
  • ✅ Take a short, gentle test drive and confirm normal acceleration.
  • ✅ Recheck the repaired coil area to make sure the connector is still locked in place.
  • ✅ If the check engine light returns, scan the codes again. A remaining misfire may be caused by a spark plug, fuel injector, wiring issue, or compression problem.
  • ✅ If the battery was disconnected, the idle may relearn during the first few drive cycles.
