🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood and Remove the Engine Cover
- Use your hands to lift off the plastic engine cover if equipped.
- If any retaining clips are tight, use a trim clip removal tool to gently release them.
- Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
- Pull straight up, not sideways.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and position it so it cannot spring back.
- This helps protect the ignition circuit while you unplug the coils.
Step 3: Locate the Ignition Coils
- The 2.7L EcoBoost V6 has six ignition coils, one mounted above each spark plug.
- Each coil has an electrical connector and a small retaining bolt.

Step 4: Clean Around the Coil Area

Step 5: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connector
- Press the locking tab on the coil connector with your thumb.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help depress the lock.
- Pull the connector straight back by the plastic connector body.
- Do not pull on the wires.
- Old plastic breaks easily.
Step 6: Remove the Coil Retaining Bolt
- Use an 8mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the ignition coil retaining bolt.
- Place the bolt in a safe spot so it does not fall into the engine bay.
Step 7: Remove the Ignition Coil
- Grip the ignition coil body by hand.
- Twist the coil gently left and right to loosen the rubber boot.
- Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug well.
- If the rubber boot sticks, keep twisting gently while pulling upward.
Step 8: Inspect the Old Coil and Spark Plug Well
- Use a flashlight to inspect the coil boot area.
- Look for oil, coolant, water, carbon tracking, cracks, or a torn rubber boot.
- Carbon tracking looks like thin black lightning marks on the boot or spark plug porcelain.
- If oil is inside the spark plug well, the valve cover sealing area may need repair before installing new coils.
Step 9: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Apply a small pea-sized amount of dielectric grease inside the end of the new coil boot.
- Use a shop towel to wipe away excess grease from the outside of the boot.
- Do not pack the boot full of grease.
Step 10: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Push the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
- You should feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
- Make sure the bolt hole lines up with the valve cover mounting point.
Step 11: Tighten the Coil Retaining Bolt
- Start the retaining bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use an 8mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and 6-inch extension to snug the bolt.
- Use a torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the bolt to Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten. The valve cover mounting boss can be damaged.
Step 12: Reconnect the Coil Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 13: Repeat for Any Remaining Coils
- Use the same 8mm socket, extension, ratchet, and torque wrench for each additional ignition coil.
- Replace each coil one at a time.
- Make sure every connector is fully clicked into place before moving on.
Step 14: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Set the engine cover back into position by hand.
- Press down firmly over the mounting points until it seats.
- If clips were removed, use the trim clip removal tool and your hands to reinstall them carefully.
Step 15: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp snugly.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
Step 16: Clear Codes and Test Run
- Plug the OBD-II scan tool into the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to clear stored misfire codes if the repair was done for a check engine light.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Listen for smooth idle and confirm there is no shaking or flashing check engine light.
