🔧 Ignition Coils - Replacement

The ignition coils on your Equinox sit on top of the spark plugs and send high voltage to each cylinder. Replacing a weak coil can fix misfires, rough idle, poor acceleration, and check engine light codes like P0300 or P0301-P0304.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Let the engine cool completely before starting. Coils and the valve cover area can be hot.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you want extra safety while unplugging coil connectors.
  • Do not pull on the wires. Unplug each coil connector by the connector body only.
  • Keep dirt out of the spark plug tubes while the coils are removed.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • 1/4-inch extension
  • Torque wrench, inch-pound range
  • Flat trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Dielectric grease
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Ignition coil - Qty: 1 per failed cylinder
  • Ignition coil set - Qty: 4 if replacing all coils

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before touching the ignition system.
  • If you disconnected the battery, save radio presets before doing so.
  • If you have a scan tool, clear misfire codes after the repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood and access the engine cover

  • Use your hands to lift off the engine cover if equipped on your Equinox.
  • If it feels stuck, pull straight up evenly from both sides.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Disconnect battery power if desired

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and make contact.
  • This reduces the chance of electrical damage.

Step 3: Remove the ignition coil electrical connector

  • Use your fingers or needle-nose pliers if needed to release the connector lock.
  • Press the tab and pull the connector straight off the coil.
  • Repeat for the coil you are replacing.

Step 4: Remove the ignition coil hold-down bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4-inch ratchet, and 1/4-inch extension to remove the coil bolt.
  • Lift the coil straight up and out of the spark plug well.
  • Torque on installation: 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)

Step 5: Install the new ignition coil

  • Apply a light film of dielectric grease inside the coil boot if desired.
  • Push the new coil straight down onto the spark plug until it seats fully.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bolt and snug it by hand first.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect the electrical connector

  • Push the connector onto the coil until you hear or feel it lock.
  • Give it a gentle tug to confirm it is secure.

Step 7: Reassemble the engine cover and battery

  • Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it straight down into place.
  • If disconnected, reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten it with the 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth idle.
  • Check the engine light. If it stays on, scan and clear codes.
  • If a misfire returns on the same cylinder, the spark plug may also be worn or fouled.
  • Take a short test drive and confirm the engine feels normal under light acceleration.
