Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Use your hands to lift the plastic engine cover upward from its rubber mounting grommets.
- If any trim clips are present near the work area, use a trim clip removal tool to lift them gently.
- Set the cover aside where it will not get stepped on.
- Lift evenly to avoid cracking plastic.
Step 2: Clean Around the Ignition Coils
- Put on safety glasses before using compressed air.
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dust and grit away from the tops of the ignition coils.
- This keeps debris from falling into the spark plug wells when the coils are removed.
Step 3: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connector
- Choose the coil you are replacing.
- Use your thumb to press the electrical connector lock tab.
- If the tab is stiff, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently depress the lock while pulling the connector straight back.
- Do not pry hard on the connector; the plastic can break with age and heat.
- Wiggle gently, do not yank.
Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the ignition coil retaining bolt.
- Place the bolt in a small safe spot so it does not fall into the engine bay.
Step 5: Remove the Old Ignition Coil
- Grip the ignition coil body by hand.
- Twist it slightly left and right to break the rubber boot loose from the spark plug.
- Pull the coil straight upward and out of the spark plug well.
- Inspect the old coil boot for oil, coolant, cracking, burning, or carbon tracking. Carbon tracking looks like thin black lightning marks.
- If oil is inside the spark plug well, the valve cover tube seal may be leaking and should be repaired before installing new coils.
Step 6: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Compare the new ignition coil to the old one. The length, connector shape, bolt tab, and rubber boot should match.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the lower rubber boot opening.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps the rubber boot seal and release later.
- Do not fill the boot with grease; too much can cause poor connection.
Step 7: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Slide the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
- Push firmly until you feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
- Align the coil mounting tab with the bolt hole.
- Start the retaining bolt by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
Step 8: Tighten the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch torque wrench to tighten the ignition coil bolt.
- Torque to 9.8 Nm (7.2 ft-lbs).
- Do not overtighten. The bolt threads into aluminum, which can strip if forced.
Step 9: Reconnect the Electrical Connector
- Push the electrical connector straight onto the ignition coil until it clicks.
- Lightly tug the connector body by hand to confirm it is locked.
- Repeat Steps 3-9 for any additional ignition coils you are replacing.
Step 10: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Line up the engine cover with the rubber mounting grommets.
- Press down by hand until the cover seats securely.
- If any trim clips were removed, reinstall them by hand or with the trim clip removal tool used carefully as a pusher.
Step 11: Reconnect the Battery
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal snugly.
- Do not overtighten the battery terminal clamp.
Step 12: Clear Codes and Start the Engine
- Use an OBD2 scan tool to clear stored misfire codes if the check engine light was on.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
- Listen for smooth idle and watch for the check engine light returning.
