🔧 TITAN - Ignition Coil Replacement

Replacing the ignition coils on your TITAN helps fix misfires, rough idle, poor acceleration, and flashing check-engine-light problems caused by weak or failed coils. The 5.6L V8 uses one coil per cylinder, mounted on top of each spark plug.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before working near the valve covers.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on ignition coil wires. Pull only on the connector body.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells. Dirt can fall into the engine if a spark plug is removed later.
  • ⚠️ Replace coils one at a time if you are new to this repair. This helps avoid mixing up connectors.

Note: If one coil failed, you can replace only the failed coil. If your TITAN has high mileage and several coils are original, replacing all eight is often the better long-term repair.


📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your TITAN on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the key fob away from the truck.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • If you are replacing a specific failed coil, use an OBD2 scan tool to identify the misfire cylinder before removing parts.
  • A “coil pack” is the small ignition unit mounted above each spark plug. It creates the high voltage needed to fire the spark plug.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover

  • Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward.
  • If the cover feels stuck, gently rock it side to side while lifting.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not get stepped on.
  • Pull upward, not sideways.

Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the battery.

Step 3: Locate the Ignition Coils

  • Look along the top outer edges of both valve covers.
  • Your TITAN has eight ignition coils, four on each side of the V8 engine.
  • Each coil has an electrical connector and a small mounting bolt.
  • Use compressed air nozzle to blow dirt away from the area around each coil before removal.

Step 4: Move Minor Obstructions If Needed

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen any nearby intake tube clamp if extra hand space is needed.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release small hose clips only if they block access to a coil.
  • Do not force plastic hoses or wiring harnesses. Older plastic can crack easily.
  • Take a phone photo first.

Step 5: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connector

  • Press the locking tab on the ignition coil connector with your thumb.
  • If the tab is tight, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently help depress the lock.
  • Pull the connector straight off the coil.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 6: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the coil mounting bolt.
  • Place the bolt somewhere safe so it does not fall into the engine bay.

Step 7: Remove the Old Ignition Coil

  • Grip the top of the ignition coil by hand.
  • Twist it gently left and right to loosen the rubber boot.
  • Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug well.
  • If it feels stuck, keep twisting gently while pulling upward.
  • Do not pry hard.

Step 8: Inspect the Coil and Spark Plug Well

  • Use a flashlight to look into the spark plug well.
  • Check for oil, coolant, heavy dirt, or water.
  • If oil is present, the valve cover tube seal may be leaking and should be repaired before installing a new coil.
  • Use compressed air nozzle to blow out loose dirt only. Wear safety glasses.

Step 9: Prepare the New Ignition Coil

  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot of the new coil.
  • Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps seal out moisture and makes future removal easier.
  • Do not fill the boot with grease. A thin film is enough.

Step 10: Install the New Ignition Coil

  • Push the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
  • Make sure the coil sits flat against the valve cover.
  • Install the coil mounting bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use an 8mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolt to Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).

Step 11: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Push the ignition coil connector onto the new coil until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector to confirm it is locked in place.

Step 12: Repeat for Additional Coils

  • Use the same 8mm socket, extension, ratchet, and torque wrench for each remaining coil.
  • Replace one coil at a time if replacing all eight.
  • Keep each connector matched to its original location.

Step 13: Reinstall Any Moved Parts

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to tighten any intake tube clamp you loosened.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to reinstall any hose clips you removed.
  • Make sure no tools, bolts, or rags are left in the engine bay.

Step 14: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

Step 15: Reinstall the Engine Cover

  • Line up the engine cover with its rubber mounting points.
  • Press straight down by hand until it seats fully.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your TITAN and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
  • Listen for smooth idle and confirm the engine is not shaking.
  • Use an OBD2 scan tool to clear misfire codes if the check engine light was on.
  • Road test gently for 10-15 minutes and confirm normal acceleration.
  • If the check engine light flashes, stop driving and recheck the coil connector and coil seating.
  • If the same cylinder misfire returns, inspect the spark plug, fuel injector, compression, and wiring for that cylinder.
