🔧 Sienna - Ignition Coil Replacement

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Sienna on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and let the engine cool completely.
- Record radio presets and other saved preferences that could be lost when the battery is disconnected.
- Open the hood and place protective towels over the painted fender edges.
- Use masking tape and a permanent marker to label every hose and connector removed from the upper intake manifold.
- The upper intake manifold, also called the intake plenum, is the large chamber that distributes air to all six cylinders.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable from the battery and position it where it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
- Wait at least 90 seconds before disconnecting engine electrical connectors.
Step 2: Mark and Remove the Wiper Arms
- Use masking tape and a permanent marker to mark each wiper blade’s resting position on the windshield.
- Remove the plastic nut caps with a plastic trim-clip removal tool.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove both wiper-arm nuts.
- Rock each arm gently at its pivot and lift it from the splined shaft. Do not pry against the windshield.
Step 3: Remove the Cowl Covers
- Use a plastic trim-clip removal tool to remove the cowl retainers.
- Release the rubber weatherstrip by hand.
- Disconnect the windshield-washer hose by hand and lift off the plastic cowl panels.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to unbolt the windshield-wiper motor and cowl reinforcement components that block access to the rear of the engine.
- Disconnect the wiper-motor electrical connector before lifting the assembly out.
- Keep all clips and fasteners arranged in removal order.
Step 4: Remove the Engine Cover and Air-Inlet Duct
- Pull the decorative engine cover straight upward by hand to release its rubber mounting grommets.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the air-duct clamps.
- Disconnect the ventilation hose using hose-clamp pliers.
- Unplug the airflow-sensor connector by pressing its locking tab.
- Remove the air-inlet duct and air-cleaner outlet section.
Step 5: Remove the Throttle Body
- Unplug the throttle-body electrical connector by pressing the lock and pulling on the connector housing.
- Use hose-clamp pliers to release any hose clamps attached to the throttle body. Catch small coolant drips with clean shop towels.
- Use a 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the throttle-body fasteners.
- Lift off the throttle body and discard its old gasket.
- Do not push or force the electronic throttle plate open by hand.
Step 6: Disconnect Upper Intake Manifold Connections
- Label each vacuum hose, ventilation hose, wiring connector, and bracket with masking tape and a permanent marker.
- Release hose clamps with hose-clamp pliers and disconnect the hoses without twisting their plastic fittings.
- Use a 10mm or 12mm socket, as fitted, to remove wiring and support brackets attached to the manifold.
- Check the rear and both ends of the manifold carefully for hidden hoses or connectors.
- Take photos before disconnecting each hose.
Step 7: Remove the Upper Intake Manifold
- Use a 12mm socket, extensions, and ratchet to loosen the manifold fasteners gradually, working from the outside toward the center.
- Lift the manifold straight upward. Stop immediately if anything remains connected.
- Remove the old manifold gaskets.
- Cover every open intake port immediately with plastic intake-port covers and clean shop towels.
- Do not scrape debris into the intake ports.
Step 8: Remove the Front Ignition Coils
- Press each coil connector’s lock and pull the connector straight off.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the retaining bolt from each of the three front coils.
- Twist each coil gently, then pull it straight upward from the spark-plug well.
- Inspect each well for oil or water. Oil indicates a sealing problem that should be repaired before installing new coils.
Step 9: Remove the Rear Ignition Coils
- Use the same connector-release method on the three rear coils now exposed below the removed manifold.
- Use a 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove each rear coil bolt.
- Twist and lift each coil straight out without levering against the cylinder-head cover.
Step 10: Install the New Ignition Coils
- Compare each new coil with the removed coil before installation.
- Use a dielectric grease applicator brush to place a very thin film of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot opening. Dielectric grease is an insulating silicone grease that helps keep moisture away from the spark plug.
- Push each coil straight onto its spark plug until fully seated.
- Install each retaining bolt by hand to prevent crossed threads.
- Use a torque wrench and 10mm socket to tighten all six coil bolts to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect each coil connector until its lock clicks.
Step 11: Reinstall the Upper Intake Manifold
- Use clean shop towels to wipe the gasket-contact surfaces. Do not allow solvent or debris into the intake ports.
- Remove the plastic intake-port covers and verify that no towel, tool, or loose object remains behind.
- Install the new upper intake manifold gaskets in their correct grooves.
- Lower the manifold straight into position without displacing the gaskets.
- Start every fastener by hand, then use a 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the manifold fasteners evenly from the center outward to 21 Nm (15 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect all labeled hoses, electrical connectors, and brackets using hose-clamp pliers and the appropriate 10mm or 12mm socket.
Step 12: Reinstall the Throttle Body and Air Duct
- Position the new throttle-body gasket and install the throttle body.
- Start all fasteners by hand, then use a torque wrench and 10mm socket to tighten them evenly to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the coolant or ventilation hoses with hose-clamp pliers.
- Reconnect the throttle-body electrical connector until it clicks.
- Install the air-inlet duct and use an 8mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to secure its clamps.
- Reconnect the airflow-sensor connector and ventilation hose.
Step 13: Reinstall the Cowl and Wiper Components
- Position the cowl reinforcement and wiper-motor assembly.
- Reconnect the wiper-motor connector.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the removed cowl fasteners to their original positions. Do not overtighten fasteners installed into plastic.
- Install the plastic cowl panels, washer hose, weatherstrip, and retaining clips using the plastic trim-clip removal tool.
- Align the wiper arms with the tape marks on the windshield.
- Install the wiper-arm nuts and use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten them to 26 Nm (19 ft-lbs).
- Install the nut caps and remove the windshield tape.
Step 14: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative cable fully onto the battery terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the terminal nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Push the engine cover straight down onto its mounting grommets by hand.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition on for about 10 seconds without starting the engine, then switch it off.
- Start the engine and allow it to idle. The idle may fluctuate briefly while the electronic throttle system relearns.
- Listen for a hissing sound around the upper intake manifold, which can indicate a disconnected hose or displaced gasket.
- Verify that the check-engine light does not remain illuminated or flash.
- Check the throttle-body hose connections for coolant leakage.
- Operate the windshield wipers and confirm that both arms park at the tape-marked positions without contacting the trim.
- Take a short, gentle road test. Stop and recheck all accessible connectors and hoses afterward.
- If the engine misfires or the check-engine light flashes, shut it off immediately and recheck coil connectors, manifold seals, and vacuum hoses.
